The TGA has announced an interim decision that they will not amend the Poison Standard Regulations, denying animals access to medicinal cannabis.

The TGA has announced in an interim decision they will not amend the existing Poison Standard regulations due to perceived risks and toxicity of cannabinoid substances for animals.

Dr Marta Calvo Blanco DVM, Head of Veterinary Operations at eCS Vet, which works to improve animal welfare by providing education and support for veterinarians on medicinal cannabis, said eCS Vet is determined to clarify and substantiate their application to the TGA by the April 11 deadline.

Terpenes are the compounds responsible for the way most plants smell and taste. They are abundant in cannabis and many other plants, fruits, and herbs.

In your submission you may want to mention some or all of the following:

- The need of new available treatments for animals in Australia.

- The need of expanding the knowledge about these medications among the veterinary Community.

- The high success achieved by animals having access to these therapies overseas.

- The need of controlled, high quality medicinal cannabis products for the animal’s safety.

- The need of Veterinarians accessing and controlling these products for a better support of their patients.

- The fact that these medicines have been shown to be safe and beneficial for animals when used and controlled by veterinarians.

- The fact that these medicines, when used properly, have minimal adverse side effects (in contrast to many AINE’s particularly in old animals).

- The fact that these medicines are already being used by medical practitioners in humans as part of expanded Access Schemes.

Your personal experience (if this is the case) of the benefits of these substances (if you have had direct experience of treatments with these therapies). Note that having these treatments in Australia at the present time is illegal without a veterinary prescription and you should be careful about any content that you use.

This would be a huge win for veterinary medicine and all animals in Australia. "The application closes on October 7 with CANNect Group focusing on pet owners and vets in a bid to change the language from “human therapeutic use” to “human or animal therapeutic use” and allow for safe access to cannabis products for veterinary patients."

Public consultations are now OPEN on proposed amendments to the Poisons Standard. At the present moment, cannabinoid medications (THC/CBD) within Schedule 8 are only available for therapeutic use on humans and we believe this needs to change.

This is your chance to have your voice heard. Let’s improve the medical system for animals under veterinary care. Your pets deserve it!

All submissions received by 7 October, 2021 will be considered by the delegate before they make an interim decision.

Do you have an old cat that howls for no apparent reason at night time? Did you know that cats can have dementia or an Alzheimer's-like disease with signs very similar to those in humans?

It's called Feline Cognitive Dysfunction (FCD) and it is a disorder in cats which causes a decline in an aging cat's cognitive abilities, without any known underlying medical reason.

In the last few days, CANNect Veterinary has lodged a submission for a proposed amendment to Schedule 8 (S8) of the Poisons Standard. This will become open to public consultation this August and will last for 1 month.

This amendment involves rewording Schedule 8 of Cannabis and Tetrahydrocannabinols to make these medications available to animals under veterinary control. This is an invaluable change for veterinarians, pet owners and their furry family members.

In the coming weeks we will be inviting you, as a veterinarian or pet owner, to support our application for the rescheduling of these medicines. We will be sharing with you why this change is important and instructions on how to make your voice count! This is your chance to create a positive change in Australia by helping animals to have access to a whole range of new medicines that are beneficial for them.

The Warsaw Zoo in Poland will be administering CBD h**p oils to alter the mood their elephants. The passing of Erna, head of the elephant herd, has presented many stressful situations for the others and veterinarian Dr. Agnieszka Senskowskahope hopes this medication will help them while they sort out their new positions within the hierarchy.

Dr. Czujkowska, who is leading the project, said CBD had already been used on dogs and horses and that they hoped it might work on elephants as an alternative to medication. The results could take months, she added.

The elephants will be receiving CBD oil with food, but also as recommended, will be administered directly into their mouth.
