Summer Pet Care
Australia's hot summer days can be just as challenging for our furry friends as it can be for us.
Here are some tips to help keep your best bud happy and healthy as it heats up.
1. When the weather is hot and humid, bring your pets indoors to keep them safe and cool.
2. Brushing and grooming can help keep pets cool and comfortable in these summer months.
3. Make sure your pets have plenty of fresh, clean water to drink at all times, especially when outdoors in the sun.
4. Pace yourself and take frequent breaks when exercising your pet during the summer. Too much exercise in the heat can lead to exhaustion and dehydration.
5. Be on the lookout for signs of overheating such as heavy panting, glazed eyes, fast pulse, vomiting and restlessness. If you notice these signs move your pet to a cool, shaded area and offer them water. Contact your veterinarian if your pet doesn't improve.
6. Fleas, ticks and other parasites are more active during the summer months. Talk to your veterinarian about the best preventative options for your pet.
7. When taking your dog for a walk during the summer, keep it short and try to stay in the shade as much as possible.
8. Just like humans, animals need protection from the sun too. Use pet safe sunscreen and make sure to avoid any products that contain ingredients such as zinc oxide or para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA)
