I am currently preparing a project proposal designed to support low-income earners in desexing their cats within the Wyndham City area... Miss Snowflake has decided it's time she had my attention instead 😻 Wyndham Community Vet

Here's an interesting fact I've learned while researching data for my project proposal:

If you own 1 undesexed male or female cat who roams the streets, day or night, you are directly responsible for the birth of 1 million kittens over 8yrs.

2 undesexed cats = 2 million kitten births over 8yrs
3 undesexed cats = 3 million kitten births over 8yrs
4 undesexed cats = 4 million kitten births over 8yrs

Please 🙏🏽 be a responsible cat owner...

Yesterday, Badger was taken into our care and immediately administered pain relief and antibiotics.

We have thoroughly cleaned and bandaged his severe wounds.

Daily bandage changes will be necessary for Badger until the inflammation and swelling decrease, allowing us to evaluate the movement and function of his injured leg.

Badger is currently eating and faring well.

We will continue to provide updates.

The welfare of Tom Cats is frequently neglected.

This is a long post... but please take the time to read this and hopefully share to educate the community.

People often call our clinic to book a female cat for desexing and tell us they don't want to desex their male cat.

The reasons that people give us to justify not desexing their male cat are:
1. It will make him lazy
2. He will get fat
3. He can't get pregnant
4. It's not my problem if he gets a neighbours cat pregnant
5. Don't want to take his manhood
6. He keeps the other Tom Cats away by fighting them off the property
7. It will change his personality
8. He's fine just as he is

We try to educate people about the dangers and challenges that 'intact' male cats face are:
1. Vicious fights with other roaming Tom's
2. Extended periods outdoors causing them to get lost
3. They have high chances of being hit by cars, harmed by people, trapped and euthanised by council pounds
4. Increased risk of injury and infection.
5. Exposure to predators

Intact male cats confined indoors will display behaviours of their frustration, including:
1. Urine marking
2. Scratching at doors
3. Pacing
4. Hu***ng

Benefits of neutering a male cat:

Neutering a male cat is the kindest thing you can do for him. It's offering him a better quality of life and a more harmonious living environment for everyone.

Reasons to desex your male cat:

1. **Reduced Aggression**:
Neutered males tend to be less aggressive and territorial, which can lead to a more peaceful household.

2. **Decreased Urine Marking**:
Neutering often reduces the urge to spray urine to mark territory, which is a common behavior in unneutered males.

3. **Fewer Health Issues**:
Neutering can lower the risk of certain health problems, such as testicular cancer and prostate issues.

4. **Less Roaming**:
Neutered cats are less likely to roam in search of a mate, which can reduce the risk of accidents, injuries, and getting lost.

5. **Population Control**:
Neutering helps control the cat population, reducing the number of stray and unwanted cats.

6. **Improved Behavior**:
Neutering can lead to calmer and more sociable behavior, making the cat more enjoyable as a pet.

7. **Longer Lifespan**:
Neutered cats often live longer, healthier lives due to a combination of reduced risks for certain diseases and injuries.

Dental health is a vital component of a pet's overall health. Neglecting this can have serious repercussions.

Poor dental health can trigger a cascade of other health problems including excruciating pain, serious health issues, tooth loss, bad breath, and dental disease.

Regular veterinary check-ups, at least once a year, are crucial for detecting early signs of dental problems and maintaining optimal oral health

Featured here is 'Fluffy', a recent feline patient who has undergone entropion surgery. Entropion surgery is a corrective procedure aimed at correcting the condition of an eyelid that rolls inward.

Common clinical signs in cats with entropion include eye discharge and painful eyelid spasms. The friction caused by hairs rubbing against the cornea and conjunctiva can result in conjunctivitis and corneal ulcers.

If your cat is experiencing these symptoms, please contact our clinic to schedule a consultation with our trusted and experienced surgical team, who are skilled in entropion surgery.

Poodles often have an excess of hair inside the ear canal and a unique ear structure which can make them very susceptible to ear infections.

Infection can appear when the natural flora (yeast and bacteria) in the ear canal gets out of balance and/or when there's too much moisture.

Otitis externa is known as; ear canal infection / inflammation.

Common indicators include:
erythematous ears; a foul odour; varied discharge colours; head shaking and scratching; ear swelling; and vocal distress.

Upon recognizing these symptoms, please call your trusted vet.

Pictured here is 'Bruno' a former street cat who has been receiving transformative care by our clinic in preparation for our adoption program at Give a Kitty a Home

Dr. Ruddy meticulously removed wobbly, broken and rotten teeth, and provided a thorough scale and polish to ensure Bruno's remaining teeth are healthy and pain-free.
