I arrived back home from a trapping mission around 4am to find that our little Jerry had declined significantly. We got him from his foster carer last night and had a vet appointment booked for this morning, but it wasn't soon enough.
We brought him to the emergency vet, but he was simply too weak to recover. He passed away gently, with his little head cradled in my hands.
FIP took him from us too soon.
I'm back home again now, sitting outside in my car trying to process everything before I go inside and try to sleep a little before work.
And later tonight, after work, and after taking care of all the cats, I will be back out trapping again. Because more little lives need saving. There are always more.
And even if we cannot save them in the end, even if they leave us too early like little Jerry did, at least they know warmth and love and comfort before they go. And despite the pain and exhaustion and expense, it is always worth it. THEY are worth it.
Sleep sweetly, little Jerry.
We love you.
