ECS Veterinary

ECS Veterinary eCS Vet offers support to Australian veterinarians and pet practitioners to prescribe cannabinoid medications to pets.

We work to educate veterinarians about medicinal cannabis, allowing you to add it as a treatment option in your clinic. While research is still in its infancy, there is a growing understanding of medicinal cannabis as an efficacious treatment option for pain, inflammation, oncology, stress, anxiety...

Medicinal cannabis medicines, including cannabidiol (CBD), are regulated medicines in Australia.

Australian veterinarians are able to prescribe these products when they deem a therapeutic need but access is only available with compounded formulations.

Do you have an aging friend at home? 🐹

As dogs get older, they will start experiencing certain changes and show signs in a similar way as we humans do. Aging is a slow and gradual process that makes them more susceptible to develop health issues like arthrosis, cancer, dementia…

August 30th marks National Holistic Pet Day! This is a day to take the opportunity to look at our pet's whole health - from nutrition to any chronic conditions.

What does the term Holistic mean? It is a method that is concerned with treating 'whole' systems rather than looking at individual parts. This is an incredibly important view since everything we are and everything we do is connected. Are you making sure your pets are eating healthy, getting enough exercise, groomed and are spending quality time with their owners?

If you have any questions or concerns about any aspect of pet health, feel free to reach out to Dr Marta Calvo Blanco. Dr Calvo Blanco has spent many years honing her skills in holistic medicine to improve pet health with natural therapies.

We are so saddened to hear of her passing. Olivia was widely known for her humanitarian efforts. She was a huge advocate for wildlife and the environment. In 1990 She was named the first Goodwill Ambassador to the United Nations Environment Program.

In 1994, Olivia hosted an Australian nature series, travelling the world reporting about the environment and wild animals. Her efforts have not gone unnoticed in the veterinary field.

In 1999 she received the Red Cross Humanitarian Award. In 2006, she was honoured with an Order of Australia for services to entertainment, the environment and the fight against breast cancer.

Our country, and planet as a whole is a better place because of her! We share our deepest condolences to her friends and family. Sending you all so much love.

Dr Marta Calvo Blanco explains the prevalence of cannabis poisoning in pets.

The main takeaway is that with the growing popularity of human cannabinoid products and consumption, we must maintain a safe environment for our pets. This can be achieved though awareness, improved legal pathways, and product quality control.

The campaign to reword Schedule 8 cannabis and THC entries in the Poisons Standard to allow for veterinary access has received a boost after the Therapeutic Goods Administration delayed a final decision pending further consultation with stakeholders.

This is extremely positive news and we are elated that the TGA is taking the time to consider all of the research and information that has been provided to make the best decision possible.

Head of veterinary education Dr Marta Calvo Blanco told Cannabiz: “We believe the risk of diversion is minimal, and equivalent to that present for currently available human medications.

“The lack of research is probably more a ‘lack of knowledge’. We’re working hard to educate, train and support vets in the use of cannabinoids for animals. These molecules are quite safe, and especially so under veterinary supervision.”

Please, please, please keep your personal products and medications out of reach from your pets!

Your pets have more cannabinoid receptors in their brains, which means the effects of cannabis are more dramatic and potentially more toxic when compared to humans. A small amount of cannabis is all it takes to cause toxicity in cats and dogs.

It is also very important to consult a professional if you wish to treat your pets with cannabinoids. Precise dosing and a properly compounded product is paramount to the safety of your furry friends.

As more states legalize ma*****na, more pets are getting their paws on it. Veterinarians across Southern New England have seen a rise in cases in recent years. “We do see probably at least one ingestion a week, but sometimes it’s 10 to 20,” Dr. Shelly Pancoast of Ocean State Veteri...

Inflammaging!! I love this term!

When we think about our furry oldies it is so easy to see and understand that inflammation and aging are intrinsically related to each other. Cannabinoids and specifically CBD appear as potential potent compounds to be used as antiaging therapeutic agents.

Talk to your vet! Ask how phytocannabinoids can help your furry friends. And of course, feel free to contact us any time!

Many of you might use essential oils as diffusers at home, as supplements in your food, or for cosmetic purpose, but you might not be aware that essential oils are made of terpenes.

Terpenes are the compounds responsible for the way most plants smell and taste. They are abundant in cannabis and many other plants, fruits, and herbs.

Do you have an old cat that howls for no apparent reason at night time? Did you know that cats can have dementia or an Alzheimer's-like disease with signs very similar to those in humans?

It's called Feline Cognitive Dysfunction (FCD) and it is a disorder in cats which causes a decline in an aging cat's cognitive abilities, without any known underlying medical reason.

Supplementation with cannabinoids derived from h**p like cannabidiol (CBD) helps the Endocannabinoid System (ECS) regulate the body's functions, including pain sensations, temperature, sleeping, memory, mood, appetite, reproduction, inflammation, and so much more, for overall wellness.

This is especially beneficial for the aging feline who may be experiencing the beginning stages of cat Alzheimer's.

The Warsaw Zoo in Poland will be administering CBD h**p oils to alter the mood their elephants. The passing of Erna, head of the elephant herd, has presented many stressful situations for the others and veterinarian Dr. Agnieszka Senskowskahope hopes this medication will help them while they sort out their new positions within the hierarchy.

Dr. Czujkowska, who is leading the project, said CBD had already been used on dogs and horses and that they hoped it might work on elephants as an alternative to medication. The results could take months, she added.

The elephants will be receiving CBD oil with food, but also as recommended, will be administered directly into their mouth.

Two stressed African elephants are to be given medical cannabidiol -- CBD -- to help them relax and stop fighting at a zoo in Poland.
