Bucky gets a more ‘natural’ Cavalier groom with the exception of taming his wizard-level grinch feet. His fresh kicks are optimised for outdoorsy activities and slippery surfaces and also allow for better toe bean appreciation 🐾

Merry Christmas!
I hope your holiday is restful, safe, delicious 😋 and spent in good health ☺️✨

It was an incredible year. I am proud of myself for stepping up to all kinds of challenges and seeing a lot of long held aspirations come to fruition. I learned so much: about dogs, about the art of grooming, and about myself. Having my own business has helped me to see myself in a whole new light. I’m so grateful to my clients for being a part of that. Thank you!!!

I will return to the salon on the 2nd of January and will begin returning any messages from the 31st December. My work phone will be turned off til then while I rest and reset for 2025. I have POTS and overdid things this past month 🤪 I appreciate your understanding while I take a needed break.

Lots of undercoat ready to say buh-bye! 👋

Clipped Cavalier/combination coats still benefit from a big deshed. I’m using one of my go-to’s the brush here (not an ad, just a cool product)! A final touch up with a carding knife and we not only have a beautiful smooth finish but are helping to promote a healthy, functional coat as the haircut grows out (and less hair on the floor too, no one’s mad about that!)

You can see by that fluffy halo that the undercoat is dull, lightly coloured and a cottony texture. The guard hairs are richer in colour and form the protective layer from the elements. If the coat is lacking shine and looking a bit “meh” that is usually a good indication that it’s time for a deshed!

Bruce is a pro at photos. I had about 30 hurried seconds to play with for a Christmas photo of Bruce (museli bar lunch in mouth, on the phone, groomers know what I’m talking about). They ALL turned out 😂 He just can’t take a bad photo.

Arlo is without a doubt one of the forerunners of 2024’s “Most Improved”!

This little guy was a spicy, stressy baby who made me doubt myself and my handling approach many times 😅

There is only so much a groomer can do to help in 1-2 hours every 4-8 weeks, and we already have a job to do in getting the actual grooming done. With a few rare exceptions, groomers are not dog trainers, even those like myself who take a more holistic approach. We are hair stylists. This is one of the reasons why working on grooming at home is absolutely essential. Sometimes dogs will stall completely or regress without it.

I spent hundreds of hours this year consuming (more) dog behaviour and training material to better help clients like Arlo. There are no shortcuts, and Arlo’s progress was slow. So I nearly fell over the day he started gently, loosely offering me a paw for his nail trim! When he did it again at his next groom, and then the next, I might have teared up a bit 😅

I recently groomed .mutts “white crusty” girl Riley. This was to thank Petra for staying back late one day when I needed an extra pair of hands for a nervous dog. You’re a champion Petra.

Riley’s number one priority in life is keeping tabs on her ball, which is not a part of grooming. Grooming is therefore annoying. Like, why isn’t it over already?! And WHERE DID YOU PUT MY BALL?! Buuuut we got this cute little haircut done with a bit of patience.

We’ve been able to build a great working relationship over the last few years. Earning the trust and respect of a dog really lights me up. I can bribe my way into a dog’s good graces with treats, but getting to the good stuff takes time and consistency.
