This little darling is Azura πŸ₯° she is a blue Burmese and is just over one year old. She was in recently so we could have a better look at her teeth while she was anaesthetized (as you can imagine, trying to examine an active young cat's teeth is quite difficult!). She had previously come in for a consultation with Dr Lee and her teeth had appeared..... unusual!

Once anaesthetized, it was confirmed that she had an extra tooth, not just on one side, but an extra one on both sides of her bottom jaw! Dental xrays were taken, so we could get a better look at what was going on under the gum.

As her xrays show, the extra tooth (on one side in particular) is growing sideways, and removing it would be a delicate procedure with a lot of care needed not to damage her other teeth. After consultation with her owner, it was decided to wake her up without removing them, and to refer her (along with her very impressive xrays) to a veterinary dentist in order to gain advice on the best way to proceed. Although nothing much changed for Azura on the day, we gained valuable information to help decide on the best way forward for her and her future dental health.

We loved having Azura stay with us for the day - she loved a cuddle and didn't stop purring!

Can you spot her extra teeth on her xray? πŸ¦·πŸ€”

Last month we saw the marvellous Cameron! He is a very handsome red Burmese who was feeling a bit off colour. After some anti-nausea medication and pain relief, he was feeling a lot better. Burmese are prone to certain gastrointestinal conditions such as pancreatitis and inflammatory bowel disease, and Cameron's owners are great at noticing when he isn't feeling his best.

You can see one of the photos is mid-meow - that was him silently protesting about his visit! Despite that, he is a staff favourite and always gets cuddles from our cat-crazy nurses 🐱

πŸ“š Education Post πŸ“š

Last week, we posted about male cats becoming blocked, which means they can't urinate. For this post, we wanted to talk about some risk factors, and how you can decrease your cat's risk for developing urinary problems. These risk factors apply to female cats as well, as although female cats usually don't block, they can develop other urinary problems.

Risks for developing urinary problems include:
- being overweight
- a sedentary lifestyle
- a nervous disposition
- genes
- stress, including intercat tension, lack of high resting places, poor litter hygiene such as not being cleaned often enough

The best way to help your cat are by trying to decrease stress, encourage your cat to drink more water, keeping the litter tray clean and following correct litter tray hygiene, try to keep your cat at an ideal weight and don't change their diet too frequently. While these ideas may help to reduce the risk, there are some things that we can't change, such as their genetic makeup and disposition.
