Meet Abe Mithen, a 1 year old Maine c**n.
After 84 straight days of injections to treat his FIP we are very happy to say he is in remission and healthy!
Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP) is a debilitating infection that usually affects young, and more commonly purebred cats. It is caused by a typically benign virus that causes diarrhoea, but within the affected cat it mutates to become fatal. This causes systemic disease involving lethargy, weight loss, fever, and at worst build up of abdominal or chest fluid and neurological signs.
Up until recently this condition had a 100% mortality rate, but with a new amazing anti-viral treatment called Remdesivir cats like Abe have a chance of surviving! Itโs a long and involved process, with a minimum of 84 days of daily injections required to achieve remission (in Abeโs case, 33 different vials were used!). Unfortunately as a new medication it is quite a costly treatment, but it is amazing to see our dedicated owners doing all they can for their cats. In the last photo we have our newest patient to start on remdesivir, Enzo Turvey, who is coping very well at day 32.
While this condition is uncommon, our vets are happy to answer any questions you may have about this disease.
