Have you ever been told that dog’s can detect pheromones? A phermone is a chemical secreted or excreted that triggers a social response or behaviour of another individual of the same species. Dogs have an organ that allow them to pick up scents and pheromones. The vomeronasal organ, also known as Jacobsen’s organ, is found in their nasal cavity which opens up into the roof of their mouth. You may sometimes see them exhibiting certain behaviours while sniffing (e.g. urine from another dog!) such as lifting/curling their lips, drooling or chattering their teeth. This is known as the Flehmen response, and it allows them to direct the scents to the vomeronasal organ.

Did you know that tennis balls are actually really bad for your dog’s teeth? The fuzzy surface of a tennis ball acts like sandpaper and with repeated chewing, catching and holding of the ball, gradually wears teeth down. Overtime, this can lead to dental issues such as exposed tooth pulp, infections and tooth pain. Make the switch to teeth safe balls available from or

Recently, we have had a few cases of rodenticde poisoning where pets have found and ingested rat bait! Thankfully their owners have all realised and acted quickly, bringing them in to the clinic where we have been able to induce vomiting to try physically remove the bait and then start treatment immediately. Rodenticide works as an anticoagulant by interfering with vitamin K1, this vitamin is needed to enable blood clotting and help control bleeding, as the poison decreases the amount of vitamin k, blood cannot be kept within its vessels, and uncontrolled bleeding may occur. Sadly, rodenticide not only kills rats, but pets too if they ingest the bait or even the baited rat. It is important to be wary of advertising - even if the label says it is safe for use around pets, it can still contain the same toxic ingredient and can still impact pet health and lead to death. Symptoms of rodenticide poisoning include lethargy, coughing and sneezing (which may produce blood), lack of appetite, vomiting, blood in vomit and/or urine, bloody or dark tarry stools, bruising and red spots on the gums or eyes.

There's nothing we love more than a pawfect pair! Often at the vet, many pets will come in with their owners AND an 'emotional support' buddy. When your pet comes in with their furry friend, it can help them feel more at ease for their appointment, and the 'support buddy' gets to have a positive visit to the vet! They can step on the scales, get treats and pats and they learn that not everytime they come to the vet something scary happens! Enjoy just a few of our favourite dynamic duos! (Pictured: Hoggle and Fizzgig, Loki and Pepper, Flipper and Sugar, Ponyo and Jojo.)

Did you know that when your cat shows you their belly it may not always be an invitation to pat it!? Sometimes cats can display this behaviour as a sign of trust or vulnerability and are wanting to bond with you, however, they may not actually want you to touch their bellies! If you touch a cat’s belly and they don’t want you to, this may result in kicking, scratching or even biting - so be careful! That being said, some cats may like it! Cats have very individual likes and dislikes, so it is important to read their body language and respect them.

Did you know? Animals, just like us, can suffer from arthritis or osteoarthritis. It’s not just an issue for older pets - even younger dogs can experience this painful condition. Arthritis, is a degenerative disease that if not treated, worsens over time, it’s a very common condition, affecting at least four in five dogs over the age of eight. Sometimes arthritis can be hard to notice, in the beginning changes to the joint aren’t visible yet, and with four legs, our dogs can shift their weight and posture to cope with pain.
We often hear owners say, “he’s just slowing down,” or “he’s just a bit stiff.” Many don’t notice that their dog is not as willing to exercise and play as he once was, as the change is so gradual. Unfortunately, by the time it becomes obvious, the arthritis is quite advanced and causing considerable pain.
Call us if you notice any of these symptoms – the pain of arthritis can be treated!
• Stiffness when getting out of bed in the morning (yes, just like us humans!)
• Limping or stiffness after a walk or exercise
• Licking or gnawing at joints or paws
• Puffy joints
• Abnormal gait
• Reluctance to walk upstairs or jump
• Reluctance to play and run
• Change in behaviour such as aggression
• Postural change or muscle wastage

We had the pleasure recently of seeing a litter of 11 gorgeous Belgian Malinois puppies for their first check ups, vaccinations, microchips and worming! Dr Katie and nurse Maddie were equally as exhausted as the puppies after this huge visit! After passing all their tests with flying colours, these pups will shortly be available to go to their ‘furever’ homes. Belgian Malinois dogs are one of the most athletic and intelligent dog breeds that require lots of training and activity to meet their needs, they are also extemely loyal - a perfect example of man’s best friend!

Recently, we had a visit from Insight Mobile Veterinary Diagnostics (Insight MVD) and their new CT machine on wheels! Boston the Shetland Sheepdog was their 8th patient to get scanned and he was such a good (and cute) boy! There are many reasons why we use CT; the scan penetetrates deeper than an ultrasound and can show soft tissues that aren’t visble in an x-ray, including cartilidges, tendons and ligaments. CT provides a holistic 3D view that can really help determine what is going on internally and therefore assist in accurate diagnostics and appropriate treatment. The mobile CT has made this imaging tool extremely accessible and we are so thankful for the team at Insight MVD for their continued collaboration over the years. If you’d like to book, please call us on 9729 4466.

Meet Chip - or as the staff fondly refer to him ‘Chippy Whippy’- the bravest cat you’ll ever meet! Chip first presented to us when his owner’s noticed he wasn’t jumping up on things and was struggling to get up from a seated or lying down position. Chip was also hissing and growling when being patted which was very out of character for him and indicated something was wrong. X-rays revealed that Chip had a ‘bilateral complete capital physeal fracture’; somehow he had broken both his hips! The how still remains a mystery, but it was obvious he would be in extreme pain. We were amazed at how he continued to walk around! Animals can be so stoic, and may appear as if nothing is wrong, highlighting the importance of regular check ups with the vet. Chip’s owner’s elected for life saving surgery, where the speciliast team at Melbourne Animal Referral Services (MARS) came to our clinic and completed a Femoral Head and Neck Ostectomy on both hips to relieve his pain. This procedure essentially removes the ball of the hip joint, meaning that Chip will rely on his muscles to get around in the future. Thankfully Chip is young and healthy and this was no trouble! We are so pleased to say that our dear ‘Chippy Whippy’ is doing so much better, loving his food and pats, doing his physio and roaming around once again. We are so thankful for his amazing owners and the team at MARS for Chip’s success story!

We’re curious! How many of our clients would be interested in using an online booking option if we made it available on our website? This feature would allow you to select the day, time, select your preferred vet, and specify whether it’s for a vaccination, a “one problem” consult, or a “two problem” consult.

Please note, if more issues arise than the time booked allows, we might need to schedule a follow-up visit to address everything. You can still book over the phone, but this online option would be perfect for Sundays and out-of-hours bookings (or those who dread the thought of picking up the phone!).

Have you ever seen your dog bow? If there’s other animals around, or even just you - they may do this to initiate play! If you notice your dog doing this but not in a playful way, it might be time for a visit to the vet as a ‘bow’ can also be a sign of gastro-intestinal or pancreatic discomfort.
