Ever noticed your cat was 'kneading' or 'making biscuits'? This adorable behaviour is a natural comforting action they have continued from 'kittenhood'.

When kittens nurse from their mum they knead her when feeding as it helps stimulate milk flow. As adults, this behaviour still brings them happy vibes and calm vibes and they'll often knead when they are feeling relaxed, secure and content.

So next time your cat starts making biscuits, just sit back and enjoy, knowing you have created the 'purrfect' safe and loving environment, that helps bring out your cat's 'inner kitten'! 😽

We love working with the amazing team at Pets Of The Homeless to provide the very best care for our furry friends. A pleasure as always! 🐾💙

“Bobby's* surgeries have been done and he is home recovering well. I would like to thank you so much for your kind and generous charity so that Bobby could have the surgeries and care he really needed.

Heathmont Animal Hospital was so kind to us both. My little Bobby was in the best of hands.

He is such a special little dog who gives me so much happiness and joy, especially when I am struggling so much with all my medical conditions.

I had been so concerned and worried about how I could manage to get him the care he needed. You have provided that and made a huge difference in my and little Bobby's life.

Thank you so much Pets Of The Homeless, I will be forever grateful.

Yours sincerely,
Jessie* and Bobby.”

Meet sweet Nala the chocolate Labrador, who got into trouble and hurt her poor paw pads!

After a day of fun at the pool, Nala's diligent owner's noticed she was licking her paws more than usual. Whether she walked on a surface that was too hot or scraped her paws on a rough surface, it was obvious Nala needed help. Thankfully Dr Katie and vet nurse Maddie were ready to assist and, with Nala's amazing furmum reassuring and distracting with treats, Nala had the injured skin removed from her pads, was given medications for her sore footsies and walked out with stunning orange booties to protect her feet whilst she heals!

Beautiful Nala has made a full recovery and was back to running around in no time!

Paw pads are the thick, cushioned part of the dog’s feet that absorb every step and provide traction to prevent slipping. These pads protect bones and joints from the shock incurred by running and walking. They also insulate the foot from extreme weather (hot and cold) and help the dog walk on uneven or rough terrain.

If you notice your dog licking their paws, limping or acting differently, please call the clinic on 9729 4466. Remember, animals are incredibly stoic, so even just a small change in their demeanour can indicate they aren't 100%.

We're almost in 2025! As we start the New Year it is important to prepare your pets for any loud celebrations. Fireworks can create serious anxiety in many pets, from mild reactions like hiding and whimpering to extreme reactions, like running away from home or seizures. To help your pet we have a few suggestions including creating a safe space inside for them to hide/nest and playing other sounds to cover up the noises such as the TV or radio. We recommend you also ignore the fireworks sounds as your pet will read your behaviour, therefore staying calm can help your pet to stay calm too. It’s best to stay home with your pet if at all possible, monitor them and provide comfort but a good alternative is a thundercoat or tight clothing to provide the feeling of being held. If you know your pet has a bad reaction to storms, loud noises or fireworks, we recommend contacting us ASAP to organise some medication to help your pet this festive season.

A few weeks ago we looked at how dangerous chocolates and sweets can be for our pets. During the Christmas season, we see an increase in pets coming into the clinic for eating things they shouldn't. At this time of year, there is in abundance of food that may have toxic impacts on our pets. Some of these foods include chocolate, sweets, raisins and nuts.

What should I do if my pet eats potentially toxic foods?
Contact the clinic on 9729 4466 or the Animal Poisons Helpline at 1300 869 738 to see if a poisonous amount of food has been ingested. If a toxic amount was ingested, immediate evaluation by a veterinarian will be recommended. The sooner treatment begins, the better your pet's prognosis and the less costly the treatment.

If you feel like your pet is missing out these howlidays, you could try some yummy yogurt buds available for purchase at our clinic!
