Colitis refers to inflammation of the large bowel, which can lead to symptoms such as increased defecation frequency and urgency, straining, and loose stools (which may contain blood or mucus).
If your pet suffers from a sudden bout of colitis, you can try temporarily offering them an easily digestible diet (e.g. cooked skinless chicken breast or springwater tuna, plus cooked pumpkin).
However, if their symptoms persist for more than 48 hours, or they show other signs of unwellness such as lethargy or vomiting, we’d recommend a prompt check-up with our tummy-taming vets🚨🐶!

🚨 Safety First! 🚨

During our fortnightly team training session today, we practiced our fire/emergency evacuation plan. It is Whitehorse Veterinary Hospital’s number one priority to keep our clients, patients and staff as safe as possible. We are yet to see an emergency, and work hard to keep it that way!

Have you heard of splenic tumours? These are tumours that can grow on the spleen of dogs, and may or may not spread to other organs.
Splenic tumours can sometimes be found incidentally on physical examination (if they are large enough in size) but affected pets may also present as a sudden emergency case if a previously undetected tumour ruptures and begins bleeding into their belly.
As older pets are more prone to this issue, we recommend a full physical check-up every 6-12 months for all dogs eight years of age and older.
For more information on older pet health checks, consult our elderly-pet educated team🐕👴!

Did you know that paracetamol is poisonous to cats?
Unlike humans, cats are unable to properly metabolise this drug, leading to the production of toxic by-products that can cause potentially fatal damage to their liver and red blood cells.
It’s important to never administer paracetamol to your cat, even if they seem in pain. If you ever suspect your pet to have accidentally eaten paracetamol, please phone our hospital or the Animal Poisons Helpline immediately for further advice ☎🆘.
To ensure the safest healthcare for your four-legged friend, always consult our helpful team!

12/06/2024

Whilst NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) such as carprofen and meloxicam can be great for relieving inflammatory pain in pets, they should still be used with caution.
NSAIDs should only be administered to pets who are well-hydrated and in reasonable general organ health. If used inappropriately or at excessive doses, NSAIDs can unfortunately cause damage to the kidneys or liver. They may also cause gut irritation, particularly in pets with “sensitive tummies” or when used for longer periods.
For advice on the safe use of NSAIDs in your pet, please consult our pharmacologically-proficient vets 🏥💊.

Whilst monitoring a dog’s poo is no-one’s favourite pastime, it can be a great simple indicator of a pet’s general health.
A bout of pet diarrhoea is generally not an emergency, but we’d advise a prompt check-up if your pet is also becoming lethargic or weak 🐶💤, or if they are passing blood or losing large volumes of fluid💧. Additionally, it’s also a good idea to have young puppies and kittens or older pets with pre-existing health issues assessed quickly.
When it comes to supporting pet gastrointestinal health, our team can do you a solid!

Did you know that just like us, cats can suffer from high blood pressure, also known as hypertension?
Hypertension in cats often occurs secondary to other health issues, such as kidney disease or an overactive thyroid gland.
Unfortunately, it can have dangerous consequences, potentially causing severe damage to the retinas in the eyes (leading to sudden blindness 🚫👀), as well as the heart and kidneys ❤🐱.
If you have a cat ten years of age or older, ask our vets about proactive organ health and blood pressure monitoring for your pet. Together, we can help keep your cat feline fine!

Acute kidney injury (AKI) involves sudden kidney damage. It can be caused by severe general unwellness (such as inflammation of the pancreas) or issues that directly affect kidney health (including grape toxicity in dogs or lily toxicity in cats 🍇🌺).
Pets with AKI may show changes in their drinking and urination levels, as well as vomiting, lethargy, weakness, or bad breath.
If your pet ever shows similar symptoms, it’s best to have them checked promptly by our kidney-competent veterinarians. AKI can be detected with blood and urine tests and has a much better prognosis if treated early.

It can be tempting to use leftover pet medications to treat any new or recurrent illness your pet has. However, we do not recommend this because we dose on weight and your pet’s weight might have changed since your last visit, the medication might be expired particularly after it’s already opened, and your pet’s medical issue might be different (even if it appears the same) from last time. 🚫💊🐾

Always ask us first before reaching for any medication lying around the house.

Winter is fast approaching! ❄️

Just like us, many pets feel the effects of winter. Here are some tips to keep them comfortable during the chilly months:

* Adjust their exercise regime, especially for older pets to avoid arthritis flare ups
* Set up a warm place for them to rest, away from cold drafts
* Keep your cats inside
* Provide them with extra blankets but avoid hot water bottles and/or electric blankets
* When giving them a bath, use warm water and dry them with a hairdryer
* If your short-haired dogs feel comfortable, dress them up in funky jackets and jumpers
* With less daytime hours, remember to exercise safely in the dark

Side note from your social media manager: Hello everyone! I’m officially exposing myself, it’s Nurse Annabel here 😊
There will be a 3 week hiatus with social posts due to me heading overseas. I miss seeing you and your pets faces already! I will have my phone handy so please feel free to message our Instagram or page a photo and/or update of your furry friends. Keep warm and I’ll see you in 3 weeks! ❤️💛

🐶 STAFF PET 🐶

Everyone meet Khaleesi! She is Nurse Josie’s German Shepherd who turns 9 in July. Josie has had her since she was a mischievous puppy, and she couldn’t imagine her life without her.
Khaleesi’s 2 favourite things in the world are peanut butter filled Kongs, and obviously her mumma! She’s not a fan of the family cat, but how could you not forgive her with those eyes 😍

🦷 GINGIVITIS 🦷

After a thorough dental clean, already present gingivitis may appear worse than normal for the next few days. This is due to us cleaning under the gum line, which no dental home care products can reach. This quickly resolves and a freshly cleaned mouth greatly decreases the presence of gingivitis overall! With a clean slate, continuing/beginning dental home care such as teeth brushing will stop gingivitis from returning. If you would like a teeth brushing demonstration, give us a call and book in an appointment with one of our lovely nurses! 🐱🐶

While it’s possible to buy first aid kits for pets, you can also make one yourself at home. 🚑🐶💼 Include items like a re**al thermometer, gauze swabs, soft and elastic bandages, saline and an antiseptic like chlorhexidine.

The intention of a first aid kit is to stabilise the wound or injury before seeking further veterinary care, particularly if there is the risk of infection. For some wounds, such as dog and cat bites, the risk of infection without veterinary care is high.

Today we show our appreciation for the bees! 🐝

The 20th of May is World Bee Day, which celebrates the hard working little pollinators. They are important for food security, biodiversity and ecosystem health. Swipe to see a photo of Nurse Annabel’s dad and his mate checking up on his hive.

Here is a fun fact about bees: A queen bee will lay 800,000 eggs in her lifetime! 🐝❤️

20/05/2024

A**l glands are normally emptied when your pet defecates. However, in some pets, the a**l glands don’t empty properly and they become impacted. This results in symptoms like licking and scooting from pets. Impacted a**l glands, if left untreated, can become infected and lead to a**l gland abscesses. These abscesses are incredibly painful and often rupture through the skin.

If you suspect your pet has a**l gland issues, visit one of our vets sooner rather than later.

May 17th is Endangered Species Day!

This day of action and celebration was created by David Robinson and the Endangered Species Coalition in 2006. On the third Friday of May each year, thousands of people participate in this day by learning about and taking action to protect countless endangered species.

Currently, more than 41,000 species have
been assessed to be under threat of extinction. If you have a spare 10 minutes today, visit the WWF website to learn more about living more sustainably and how you can help stop extinction in its tracks 🐘🦏

15/05/2024

If you suspect your pet might have ingested a foreign body, which is the term used to describe any non-digestible item, you must take them to the vet immediately. 🚑 Common foreign bodies in pets include string or wool, bones, plastic toys, underwear and socks and inedible food items such as corn cobs, peach pips and mango seeds. The longer a foreign body blocks the gastrointestinal system, the sicker your pet will become and the greater the risk of long-term damage.

Don’t delay if you suspect your pet has eaten something they shouldn’t have.

🐀 Maple - the bravest rat there ever was! 🐀

Little 2 year old Maple joined the surgical team last Friday for an abdominal ultrasound to further explore her heamaturia (blood in urine). The ultrasound was performed to rule out bladder and/or renal stones or tumours. Luckily for Maple, her ultrasound showed no evidence of either. The investigation continues!

Look at her cute little bladder and kidney images! It was such a delight to work with Maple, and we are glad to report that she came out of sedation without any issues. See you soon Miss Maple ❤️💛

In preparation for this Sunday, our team would like to thank all of the Mother’s in the world for everything that they do. They keep the world spinning and bring so much joy to our lives! Pictured is our gorgeous Practice Manager Jess, with her precious children Asta (who recently turned 4!) and Van 🥰

In light of Mother’s Day, we would also like to extend our thoughts to the Mum’s who have lost their children, the children who have lost their Mum, and last but not least the Dad’s, grandparents and other family members who took on a motherly role unexpectedly. We love and appreciate every single one of you ❤️💛

If your pet suffers a wound, it can be hard to know when you should take them to the vet and when they can probably be treated at home. A good rule of thumb is if the wound is deep, actively bleeding, large (even if shallow), looks infected, or is in a delicate area, you should take your pet to the vet for a checkup. And if in doubt, always play it safe and bring your pet to the vet. We can clean and close the wound and administer any medications that might be required. 🩺🐾❤️
