The aims of Rabbit Run-Away Orphanage are:

- To provide for rabbits that are sick, unwanted, stray, or have been mistreated.
- To facilitate appropriate short-term care, medical treatment, rehabilitation treatment and long-term re-homing solutions.
- To educate the public on rabbit ownership and care.
- To prevent unnecessary euthanasia of rabbits.
- To discourage cruelty to rabbits.

Mindful Movement Surrey Hills and The Rabbit Runaway Orphanage have paired up to create Bunny Yoga and raise money for the Orphanage.
🐰There are 2 classes on Sunday 16 March 2025: 10:30am and 12:00pm. Please make sure you book the correct time.
🐰The classes will be hosted at Upwey Community Hall, 1443 Burwood Highway, Upwey. Upwey is on the Belgrave train line. There is parking available at the hall.
🐰You will have plenty of time to snuggle the buns afterwards! But during the class feel free to stop, snuggle, take pictures etc, just remember to tag us in them! 🙂

🐰💕 Meet Samantha & Eddi – A Bonded Pair Ready for a Fresh Start 💕🐰

Samantha and Eddi have been through a lot, but at least, they have each other. This inseparable duo was recently found abandoned, yet despite their rough time on the streets, they remain as loving and hopeful as ever.

✨ Samantha is a mature striking butterfly giant x, full of confidence and charm. She’s been at the orphanage before—adopted back in 2019—but we don’t know what’s happened in the years since. What matters now is that she’s safe, with her beloved Eddi by her side, and ready for a fresh start.

🤍 Eddi, her devoted husbun, is a smaller young white lop with a heart of gold. His ears show signs of hardship, a reminder that life hasn’t always been kind—but you wouldn’t know it from his personality. He loves human affection and will soak up as many pats as you’re willing to give.

🌟 Meet Chantilly, Ivory, and Tibet – A Gorgeous Trio Looking for a Fresh Start! 🌟

Chantilly (F), Ivory (F), and Tibet (M) are three beautiful Cashmere rabbits with a story that tugs at the heartstrings. Found abandoned in a box, these sweet bunnies were neglected, and their luxurious fur was left in painful mats. Thankfully, they’ve had a makeover, and their adorable “poodle” haircuts only add to their charm! 🐇✂️

These curious, friendly buns are still young (around 6–7 months old) and are full of life and love to give. But as stunning as they are, their fluffy coats do come with a bit of responsibility. Regular grooming is a must for Cashmeres, and with professional grooming every few months, they’ll stay healthy, comfortable, and utterly breathtaking.

This bonded trio is as sweet as they come, and they’re hoping to find a forever home where they’ll be loved, cared for, and never neglected again. 💕

Whilst some of our buns had a brief holiday in temporary homes, over Christmas many other pet rabbits were dumped in parks, in boxes and on roadsides over this same period. We are open for adoptions to find these little ones their forever home, where they can put this trauma behind them. If rabbit welfare is important and you can offer a good indoor home, please get in touch with us. We have had 3 sets of buns dumped in boxes, parks and roadsides over this period as well as 4 different litters surrendered. We're hopping into 2025 with some big news! After a well-deserved Christmas break for some our bunnies in temporary foster care, the newly renovated Rabbit Run-Away Orphanage will be reopening for adoptions this Saturday, 11 January 2025! 🎉

We’re so excited to welcome you back into our upgraded space and introduce you to some wonderful bunnies ready to find their forever homes. 🏡💕

Our website has been updated with some of the many new faces that have joined us, but some bunnies have been waiting far too long for their chance at love. Could this be the weekend they finally meet you?

🐇 A Heartfelt Thank You to the Victorian Government 🐇
In December 2023, the Victorian Government opened grants to animal rescues to upgrade their facilities. For the first time in 10 years, rabbit rescues were eligible, and we are thrilled to share that Rabbit Runaway Orphanage was a successful recipient!
This grant has been life-changing for us. Our old, rusted, and worn enclosures had become a health hazard for our volunteers and animals. Thanks to this support, we’ve replaced them with brand-new enclosures, ordered all the way from the USA to ensure the correct size for our needs. With the incredible help of our volunteer Chris and the team, the enclosures were assembled and installed just in time for Christmas 2024.
As part of the grant, we also upgraded our building. Bryce, with Chris’s assistance, tiled and painted the space, giving it a fresh, new look that we’re so proud of.
Without this grant, our rescue might have had to close its doors. The demand for rabbit rescue services in Victoria is significant, as stray and abandoned rabbits often find themselves with nowhere to go. We regularly receive calls from council pounds, vet clinics, and residents across the state seeking help.
We are deeply grateful to the Victorian Government for recognizing the vital role rabbit rescues play and for their generous support. We hope that 2025 will bring more strategies from councils to address the growing issue of abandoned pet rabbits, as they are often the first point of contact when owners no longer want their pet, or these animals are found abandoned.
To our incredible volunteers, supporters, and community: thank you for helping us continue our mission to provide safe havens for pet rabbits in need. Together, we can make a difference!

Get ready for the cutest holiday event of the season! 🌟 On Saturday, December 7th, our amazing friends at The Rabbit Doctors are hosting a Santa-Paws Photoshoot, and we couldn’t be more excited! 🎄📸

✨ For just $35 per ticket, you’ll have 10 minutes to snap as many photos as you like with Santa-Paws and your furry family members! Rabbits, guinea pigs, and even rats are welcome 🐇🐹🐭. (Rabbits will need proof of up-to-date vaccination 🐾.)

💞 Sam & Popsicle Are Still Looking for Their Forever Home! 💞

Back at the orphanage after a lovely time being fostered, this gorgeous bonded pair has been stealing hearts with their sweet snuggles and unique personalities. 🐰🐰

Popsicle (with the helicopter ears) is the curious adventurer of the duo—always eager to explore and brighten your day with her playful antics. Sam, on the other hand, is a little more shy and reserved, but with Popsicle by his side—and a caring, patient family—we know he’ll grow in confidence and shine. 🌟

Their favorite pastime? Snuggling up together in their cozy spots and enjoying each other's company. They’re inseparable and ready to bring double the joy and love to a home that will cherish them both.

Have you ever wondered about rabbits as house pets? ❤🐇🏠

Would you like to trial rabbit ownership over the Christmas holiday period? 🐾🎄🐇 Well the Orphanage buns need a holiday, and they're waiting for YOU!

We need short term foster carers to look after some of the Orphanage buns INSIDE THEIR HOME from approximately the 14 December till mid/late January. If you’ve never had a bunny as a pet and have always wondered – but were worried about making the commitment without any experience, this is the opportunity for you!

We have singles & couples that would love a vacation! We can provide a pet fenced INDOOR enclosure, a hay and litter tray, water bowl and hay.

The Orphanage will also cover all vet care for the buns during this time. If you can help please call Judi on 9751 1229. We need to free up spaces at the Orphanage for a very busy holiday period.

"But what if I fall in love with the bunny 💕🐰" I hear you say... Well don't worry, you will have 1st choice of adoption if this should happen. The Orphanage will be on call to offer advice and support if needed over this time.

HELP NEEDED WERRIBEE AREA: Is anyone in the vicinity that can help. A hare with a broken leg is in the centre of Benson Hurst Soccer Oval at 2 Webster St, Point Cook. The hare cannot hop and the kindest is to take it to Greencross Vet in Werribee for euthanasia. If you put a towel or blanket over its head to calm it as hares frighten easily. Please help and let us know the outcome. Biggles says please help.

🍁🍁🍁THE AUTUMN YEARS 🍁🍁🍁 - Caring for a senior bun Did you know that bunnies can live for 10 to 12 years indoors? However, many do not make it to old age due to a range of health conditions and environments. 💊🩸🦠💉🧪🌡 Some of the problems facing an aging bun are: 🍂🍂 * Thinning or coarser coat * Thickening of the nails which can lead to callouses forming on the nail bed. Nails can also start turning outwards * Deteriorating mobility and weakening of the back legs are usually classic signs of arthritis and aging joints * Presentation of glaucoma and/or cataracts * Sitting for extended times in the litter box or straining to urinate * Kidney failure, bladder/kidney stones or bladder sludge which can present as excessive urination * Increased episodes of gut stasis of bloat Senior buns may require a different housing setup ie.
