We're hearing from many residents whose councils don't have a facility to rehome small pets like rabbits, guinea pigs, or birds. Instead, they're being told to contact Rabbit Runway Orphanage โ even though we're not their council's facility and aren't even in their area!

Please contact your local council to check if they have a facility to take in and rehome pet rabbits. If not, we urge you to reach out to your councillors and push for change. ๐ข

HELP NEEDED WERRIBEE AREA: Is anyone in the vicinity that can help. A hare with a broken leg is in the centre of Benson Hurst Soccer Oval at 2 Webster St, Point Cook. The hare cannot hop and the kindest is to take it to Greencross Vet in Werribee for euthanasia. If you put a towel or blanket over its head to calm it as hares frighten easily. - Caring for a senior bun
Did you know that bunnies can live for 10 to 12 years indoors? However, many do not make it to old age due to a range of health conditions and environments. ๐๐ฉธ๐ฆ ๐๐งช๐ก
Some of the problems facing an aging bun are: ๐๐
* Thinning or coarser coat
* Thickening of the nails which can lead to callouses forming on the nail bed. Nails can also start turning outwards
* Deteriorating mobility and weakening of the back legs are usually classic signs of arthritis and aging joints
* Presentation of glaucoma and/or cataracts
* Sitting for extended times in the litter box or straining to urinate
* Kidney failure, bladder/kidney stones or bladder sludge which can present as excessive urination
* Increased episodes of gut stasis of bloat
Senior buns may require a different housing setup ie. Low litter trays, quiet space, vet beds, low water bowls/food dishes, soft blankets or pet pillows. ๐ท๐ท๐ท

Rabbits are naturally curious, inquisitive and intelligent animals. Left alone for too long and without ways to keep them stimulated and entertained they can become bored and depressed easily. ๐ง๏ธ
Here are some ideas for enrichment which will keep them out of mischief! ๐
1) Dog puzzles - available from Kmart, Mosuki Bunny Shop and Petcircle. You can hide treats or their pellets for them to find instead of feeding them from a bowl ๐งฉ
2) Cat tunnels come in a variety of colors and can be parallel or 3-way
3) Multi-level cat scratcher - pick one with 2 exits as your bunny will feel safer and not trapped
4) Crafty creations using toilet paper rolls, egg cartons, brown boxes/paper - fill with hay and sprinkle of treats/chaff and tie up with sisal or twine ๐จ
5) Forage box - any flat box filled with shredded paper, hay, chaff, dried flowers/branches (rabbit safe) ๐ผ๐ผ๐ผ
6) Baby toys - plastic keys to throw around, plastic stacking cups with treats hidden in them
7) Treat balls from @mosukibunnyshop for them to chase around ๐พ
8 )Snuffle mats - make your own using old pillow case and fabric scraps. Add little pockets to hide treats in ๐งต
9) Seagrass or hyacinth mats (spray-free) rolled up into a tunnel and tied into place with sisal or twine
10) Apple, pear, mulberry, willow tree branches and leaves (spray free) are great for munching and keeping their teeth trimmed ๐ชต
11) Cardboard boxes made into castles, tunnels, trains - get your imagination going! ๐ฆ

This adorable trio of rabbits, Kate, Meg and Archie, are looking for a loving home that can provide them with the patience they need to continue to blossom ๐. Although they are a little shy around people after their rocky start of being dumped in bushland, they have been at the orphanage long enough now to get excited about the humans coming with treats and pats. Now they need their own home! ๐ โค๐ฐ
They love each other and are also happy with their own company, playing and cuddling together.
Kate, Meg and Archie are full of energy and enjoy running around and hopping through tunnels or exploring their surroundings. These wonderful bunnies have so much potential as pets, whether it is playing and snuggling together or providing an abundance of joy to their new family. With the right amount of love and care from their new owners, Kate, Meg & Archie could make the perfect furry family members.

Most days the rabbit is outside on the nature strip on the corner of Craig and Robb Sts Spotswood. ...on the side nearer the railway line rather than the Scienceworks side (I'm not good on north south diections). Or under a vehicle in that area.
