Treats 🦴

When at home use their kibble or low value treats

When out of the house you want to pull out the big guns. High value treats make you worth listening to, especially for an adolescent dog. Chicken, frankfurt, prime roll, something delicious that they don’t get at home. 🩷

The first thing to check when you’re noticed unwanted behaviours at home is your dogs routine.

How often are you walking them for? How long?

What kind of mental stimulation are you doing with them?

Where do they sleep/how long for?

How are you feeding them and when?

Most of the time all we need is a simple routine change to make a huge difference in our dog’s everyday behaviour 🐶

Today I met Herbie, a handsome young golden retriever boy 🩷 Herbie needs some work on his impulse control, recall and loose lead walking. We had such a good session today and I look forward to continuing to work with this boy.

I’m super excited to finally get my Prefix page up and running properly, some of you may already know that I am on the Golden Retriever Club of Victoria committee, a show exhibitor and a registered ANKC breeder of Golden Retriever’s. This breed is another huge passion of mine 🤍

We will hopefully 🤞🏻 be having our very first litter early next year, I may need some puppy socialiser volunteers 😉 follow along for some goldie cuteness!

Last night I met a couple of the loudest barkers I’ve ever heard 😂 even my watch gave me a noise warning! These absolute cuties are Nala and Simba 🦁

We will be working on their confidence, socialisation and working on bringing that noise level down hehe! So many lovely kisses from little Simba after he realised that I’m a friend 🩷

Not long after I said goodbye to beautiful Buddy as he was picked up, we welcomed the gorgeous Narla into our home for a board and train 💜 this girl is the only dog at her house so she’s like a kid in a candy store with two golden friends to play with! I’m bias but I just love this breed.

Nails 💅🏻

Nail clipping should be done regularly to prevent the blood supply called the “quick” from growing too long, in turn meaning you cannot cut your dog’s nails short.

Dogs shouldn’t be heard tip tapping across the floorboards. When dogs have long nails, it changes the shape of the foot and the way they walk, this can create long term health and joint issues. Usually having your dog walk on concrete is not enough to keep nails short.

The more often you trim your dog's nails the shorter the quick will get as it recedes when you cut near it. Try not to cut the quick as it will bleed and it’s not pleasant for the dog, you can put flour or styptic powder on the nail if this happens to stop the bleeding.

Try to trim nails once a week to prevent them from getting long. If you don’t feel comfortable or the dog has black nails (this makes the quick hard to see) you can get your vet or groomer to cut them.
Electric nail files for dogs are also very useful, or an appropriate dremel, which is what I prefer to use.

🦈 Chewing 🦈

Chewing is a completely normal behaviour for puppies. Puppies explore the world around them by putting everything in their mouths, including things that may be inappropriate. It’s important that you puppy proof your home before bringing a new puppy into the house. Having a puppy is like having a toddler, they will get into EVERYTHING if given the chance. This means covering power cords and putting blind cords, kid's toys, your slippers and whatever else that you don’t want chewed up out of reach. If your puppy chews up your belongings, it’s usually our fault because it could have been prevented.

When you first bring your puppy home it’s advisable not to let them have free roam of the house. They are usually more likely to display unwanted behaviours when they’re unsupervised. Either keep puppy in an exercise pen or gate off part of the house where its puppy proofed and where they can be monitored.

Make sure that you have lots of appropriate toys for your puppy to chew on instead. Rope toys, rubber toys, soft toys etc. I like to rotate toys and only have a few out at a time, this way puppy won’t get bored, a bored puppy is a naughty puppy. Providing lots of mental stimulation like training and puzzle toys will tire puppy out and keep them occupied. You can also buy appropriate long-lasting treats to keep them entertained. Just stay away from dental treats and chews, they are too hard until 6 months old when they have their adult teeth.

You can also buy stop chew spray or use Vicks Vapour Rub to deter chewing on things like furniture and leads.

Spirit is nearly 8 and almost considered a senior 😢 we had a quick session after work, he just LOVES training, it’s his favourite thing in the world.

I am SO proud of how far Fitz has come with his training. ✨ From barking constantly and nipping visitors, to calmly greeting them, sitting for a treat and a pat , behaving out in public, letting people touch him and focusing on his mum. Coda is living his best life ☀️

Raya and her recall, I can always rely on this girl to turn on a dime ✨ There are a few rules when it comes to recall. 1) Start early, don’t wait until your dog is a cheeky teen 2) Be WORTH coming back to, this means be exciting, engaging and give your dog a reward every time they return 3) Never get angry at your dog when they come back, even if you’ve been calling them for half an hour, next time it will be an hour! 4) Let them come and go again. Don’t JUST call your dog when you’re ready to put them on lead to leave the park, put them in their crate, take them to the vet etc. Call them, treat and then let them go again.
