Meet Hero Recognised Retrainer Natasha Pettingill of Taraleigh Training and her โsensible and smartโ partner Dusty, who has commenced a new career beyond the track in 3-phase carriage driving and trail riding.
โStandardbreds are very good in the pleasure harness because they just take everything in their stride. Once youโve got them balanced and flexed and rhymical, theyโll do anything!โ
David Aiken
Take a tour with David and Colleen Aiken, as they show you around their retiree paddocks and discuss the plans put in place with harness racehorse owners to provide a wonderful life beyond the track to their standardbreds. They speak about the special arrangement they had with Cold Major to ensure he found his forever home ๐
โWe just think that itโs really important when you own a horse, just like a dog or your cat that you love, that theyโre cared for and youโre responsible for them from the day you own themโ.

Hero Retirement Planning Month Ambassador Jackie Barker talks to Trots Visionโs Stephen Cleave about what makes standies so wonderful.
โ[Standardbreds] have got such a great temperament. They're so willing and tolerant and will do anything you ask of them.
โThey definitely deserve that second chance after racing and itโs really important that owners and trainers think about this before it gets to that time, because [the horses] still need caring for once they retire. Itโs really important to have those options in placeโ.

We recently caught up with Stacey Butcher and her talented standy Call Me Benny at Geelong Harness Racing Club to talk about how sheโs getting out and about showing people โhow good standardbreds can be!โ
When asked about why advanced retirement planning is an important aspect of harness racing, Stacey explains that having a plan for where each horse will go upon retirement from racing creates trust for racing trainers and owners and โprovides greater outcomes and means the horse is going to have a better opportunity to be rehomed quicker and to be able to enjoy their life after racingโ.

When Madeleine Smith found out one of her stable favourites Comet (HAMMERS HELLPATROL), whom she met through working for harness trainer David Aiken, was retiring from racing, she reached out to offer him a second chance beyond the track.
Comet now has a bright future full of adventures through liberty training ahead of him and a wonderful home full of love.
The Hero Direct Off The Track (DOTT) program offers everyone the opportunity to meet beautiful standardbreds just like Comet, offered directly from their racing contacts.
DOTT is bridging the gap between racing industry and equestrian contacts and giving more standardbreds the chance to connect with their next families.
Watch and be inspired by Madeleine and Cometโs story.

โI really wanted to try a standy because Iโd heard that they are a lovely breed. But, I was a bit worried about the stigma around standies and how I would be received in the competition worldโ, Lauren Buckeridge explains.
Fortunately, the experience with her first standardbred, Artie, has been nothing short of sensational and quashed all of Laurenโs initial reservations.
โIโve been absolutely blown awayโ, says Lauren of the support sheโs received since entering Artie in some HRCAV (adult riding club) competitions and standardbred shows.
โEveryone is so complimentary and theyโre so excited to see a standy out giving it a go.
โThey really have been so supportive and just been such an amazing experience โ I love it!โ
We hope you enjoy this lovely story of changed perceptions, captured at the HRV Hero Standardbred Only Megan Jones Eventing Clinic.
