Meet our 2023 Student Vet Nurse/Technologist of the Year Winner.

Hi, I am Emma and I have had the honour of being voted as the 2023 Student Vet Nurse/Technologist of the Year.

I am a mother of two young boys and have a horse, two dogs and some chickens. When Iโ€™m not at work you will very rarely find me inside as I chase around after my two active boys, taking part in pretty much any outdoor activity including hiking, kayaking and paddle boarding. Horses are a real passion of mine and riding is a huge outlet for me which I think is really important as a working mum.

My first introduction to vet nursing was in 2009 when I took part in some work experience at a local clinic and realised this is what I wanted to do. I was lucky enough to gain employment in 2010 at another nearby clinic where I worked for a number of years before being given the opportunity to stay home and start a family.

In 2019 I got sick and when you get sick and lose a large portion of your memory it really makes you reflect on what is important to you and what brings you happiness and purpose.

So once I was well enough and the kids were big enough to head off to school I decided to take the plunge and apply for another nursing job! I was lucky enough to gain employment in a local mixed practice and was quickly reminded how much I love vet nursing and what a huge part of my identity being a vet nurse is!

Since returning to the industry I have been studying to get my formal qualification and also been taking part in a lot of continued education. I immerse myself in anything from webinars, articles and seminars to conferences, additional courses and physical skill development. I am a couple of units and a prac away from graduating this year and am excited to continue to develop my skills and deepen my knowledge.

Although itโ€™s hard to leave my family behind in Western Australia I am so excited to meet more people in our industry and take part in the conference. I am so honoured to be not only nominated but then voted for this award.

If you would like an opportunity to attend the VNCA conference by being the winner of this award make sure to submit your nomination: https://www.vnca.asn.au/about-veterinary-nursing/vet-nurse-of-the-year/

Working Party on Statutory Regulation of Veterinary Nurses and Technologists in Australia.

The Australasian Veterinary Boards Council (AVBC) and the Veterinary Nurses Council of Australia (VNCA) recognise the need to advance statutory regulation of veterinary nurses and technologists to ensure the highest standards of professionalism and competency, and to protect the public and animal health and welfare. Statutory regulation is needed to improve delegation, accountability and autonomy of veterinary nurses and technologists to meet public expectations in regards to provision of veterinary services in the face of current workforce shortages.

Both organisations will establish this collaborative working party of 6 to 8 personnel to operationalise the Strategic Plan developed at the "Regulation of Veterinary Nurses and Veterinary Technicians Workshop" in December 2023. Jane Bindloss RVN(UK) has been appointed Chair of the Working Party.

If you would like to be considered for a place on the Working Party, please complete the Expression of Interest Form here: https://www.vnca.asn.au/avnat-registration-scheme-/framework-policies/expression-of-interest-form-working-party/
