Is your mare expecting this season? Foaling is an exciting time, but it’s important you have support along the way, even if you are experienced with the process.
Start by booking your mare in for a pre foaling check up to monitor the pregnancy, check general health, worming and vaccination status and caslick removal if needed. This is a great time to discuss the foaling process and make a plan for the time whether you are doing it at home or sending away.
Follow our page for more posts on pregnancy, post foaling care and breeding as the season goes on or call 97395244 to speak to one of our experienced equine vets ❤️

How many bites does it take to eat a whole kebab? 🍢
Answer = None says Max the Border Collie! 🐶

Max presented to us shortly after swallowing an entire kebab - skewer and all. We performed an X-ray which confirmed its location in the stomach. In this situation we were unable induce vomiting due to the risk of complications from the skewer puncturing something on the way up. Instead we first attempted to remove the skewer using an endoscope which is a long flexible camera we put down the oesophagus with grabbers. Unfortunately we were unable to grasp the skewer with this method, so proceeded onto surgical removal of the skewer from the stomach by performing a gastrotomy. The skewer was successfully removed with the kebab still showing grill marks and all with no signs of any chewing! We are pleased to report Max has made a full recovery and is back to being a happy dog!

Some photos from our recent equine scoping day showing what gastric ulcers look like! 🐴

• In the first two photos the dark red splotches on the paler pink area of the stomach are called ‘Squamous’ ulcers, and this area is the non-glandular portion of the stomach.

•The area between the paler pink and darker areas of the stomach is called the Margot Plicatus and this divides the glandular and non-glandular regions of the stomach, a common site for ulceration.

• The 3rd photo is of the pyloric area of the stomach, which is the stomach’s exit to the intestines. The dark red areas here are pyloric or ‘glandular’ ulcers.

Winter is the perfect time to get your horse's teeth looked at!

Apart from sharp enamel points that develop without regular dental care, a lot of other dental pathology can remain unseen without careful examination. Dental disease can severely impact riding, performance, eating/maintaining weight and can be painful.

At Yarra Ranges Animal Hospital, all patients receive sedation so that every side of each tooth can be examined carefully. Any suspicious areas can then be further investigated with tools such as dental probes and x-ray imaging.
Some of the diseases we look out for include gingival disease, peripheral and infundibular caries, EOTRH, pulp exposure and loose/infected teeth. We are also able to remove wolf teeth in horses which can impact riding and bit seating. After each dental, all clients receive a dental chart and plan for treatment and follow up visits.

Dentals also provide the perfect time to discuss any further health concerns, booster vaccinations and sheath clean for geldings.

To book in your horse's dental, please contact the clinic on (03) 9739 5244.

This is Mahalia recovering from her TPLO surgery today. The tibial plateau levelling osteotomy (TPLO) surgery is done as a treatment for cruciate ligament rupture, a very common problem we see in dogs. This is the 3rd TPLO Dr Ben has done for dogs in Mahalia’s family!

The X-rays show the placement of the bone plate used to re-align the joint and change the angle of loading through the joint, thus negating the need for the cruciate ligament anymore. TPLO is considered the “gold standard” for cruciate ligament surgery and Dr Ben has performed this surgery over 2000 times and accepts referrals from other vet clinics for this service.

After Mahalias 8 week recovery process we expect she should be moving around normally again with full function of her leg!

Rosie is a long term patient of ours who recently became unwell. Rosie had developed chronic kidney insufficiency as well as pancreatitis. Rosie's owner Glen has been very dedicated with her care, and she was treated in hospital and discharged 48h later. Rosie has come along in leaps and bounds since then and we love receiving videos like this showing just how well she is doing!
