I might look like a Labrador but I identify as a circus pony 😍

Who needs a play pen?
Child care DVS style with Miss Maeve.
If she was a breed of puppy what would she be and why? 🤣
Meet Dot the Wyandotte Hen. She came in recently for lameness and it turned out she had egg yolk peritonitis. This happens when they ovulate and the yolk part of the egg (ova) ends up in the abdomen rather than the reproductive tract. It sets up a nasty inflammatory response and significant pain. They can just be off food or like Dot present lane from referred pain. She has made a full recovery and today came in to have a hormone implant put in. This will stop her ovulating for several months to allow her to recover.
She is so beautiful, thanks for visiting today Dot.
Does the staff at your vet clinic sing to your pets? Well they certainly do at Direct Vets.
Check out Kim and Tallara joining in on a beautiful ballad Staffy style. 😍
Sad part is we missed the best of the performance, but knowing these two there will be more to come. 🤣
Teaching a puppy to tolerate a dental exam is child’s play 🦷
Being able to examine your dogs mouth is important for a number of reasons.
From being able to remove something from their mouth that could be dangerous ie a stick or rock, even something they pick up at the park that they shouldn’t to checking for dental disease as well as brushing their teeth.
Regularly playing with your puppies mouth and putting your fingers in their mouth not only when they have something they shouldn’t will make all these things easier as they get older.
Claire and Toby understand the importance of these examinations as she checks to see if he has lost any teeth.
If you are worried about your pets teeth you can book in for an examination by calling the clinic on 9369-1822 or booking a consult online
Behind the scenes @ Direct Vet Services.
Anaesthetics can be risky business. Many are on animals who are unwell or in their senior years, others have breed associated risks.
Everything we do at Direct Vets is centered around providing best of care and seeking positive outcomes for our patients.
Recently we have invested in a state of the art anaesthetic system.
When a patient undergoes an anaesthetic the respiratory system is significantly impacted. Through illness, medications, aged lungs and other systemic disease, the respiratory capacity and drive is reduced. Even the drugs that we use to anaesthetise our patients and the pain relief we use can have an effect. Shallower breaths, less often and if we are only monitoring rate (breaths per minute) and tissue oxygen levels- which can take several minutes to change if respiration is compromised things can be riskier.
Let’s us introduce Dexter (for those of you old enough to remember Perfect Match). He is a life saver- quite literally.
With his own oxygen generator he can be moved anywhere throughout the clinic. He has an anaesthetic vaporizer attached and most importantly a ventilator.
This means we set patient parameters into the equipment before the surgery, body weight, breed, species, and set the expected respiratory rate. Dexter does the rest.
While your pet is asleep he monitors oxygen, CO2, resp rate and depth, the functionality of the breath. If your pet is not breathing in the ideal way he will kick in and support them.
If your pet can’t breathe as happens with snake bites, pneumonia, chest surgery … Dexter will breath for them until they can manage again on their own.
This equipment is normally only found in Emergency and Specialty practices.
At Direct Vets patient safety is our number one priority and so we have invested in this extraordinary unit to allow us to support your little ones to the absolute best of our ability.
Here’s little Boba to show you just how amazing this is. Great
BREAST CANCER MORNING TEA 25/10/23 10:30am-12:00
Many of you know that in 2014 and again 2020 I was faced with a breast cancer diagnosis.
Multiple surgeries, radiation, chemotherapy, hormone blockers, reconstructive surgeries. It’s a lot.
Like so many other women I have been blessed with amazing support on my journey.
The support of the staff both here at work but also in hospital and still today with regular appointments at St V’s, I’m incredibly grateful.
So we have decided to hold a morning tea on Wednesday 25th October.
If you or your family have been touched by cancer, or even if you haven’t, come on down and enjoy a coffee or tea, a cupcake and a chat, and join me in an impromptu fund raiser for Breast Care Nurses.
Boobies Sisters from different Misters, would love for you to join us.
Oh and just in case you forgot or never got to see what 2020 was like for me - here’s a little reminder.
Hullo Ezzybody, it’s me Violet. I have a new sister and she is my bestest furrend. Her name is Riley and we do lots of zoomies but I is fastest. Our video is in the comments.
Hab a furry excellent week. Luv me.
Having a little bit of blood taken can be so dramatic. There, there little one.
Ok maybe not that dramatic 🤣
Check out all our shiny new kennels. Australian engineered, Australian made we love sourcing and employing local where we can.
Stage one complete, bring on the new rooms (dental suite, cattery, staff amenities) super excited.
Many of you may remember our little friend brought in from the school oval at Westborne. Once his neurological condition improved we transferred him to the amazing team at Healesville Sanctuary.
He was found to have a fracture through the scapula and some of his toes. They held him for over a month in the hospital and when he was ready commenced flight training. After a further month he was unable to progress in his ability to fly. They then made the incredibly difficult decision to euthanize.
Just wanted to acknowledge the huge effort from our client who brought in him (thanks Nikki), our team for his first week and a bit, down to the months spent at the sanctuary. Thanks to everyone involved for doing their best. Not every one will be able to be saved, but we will always be here to try. 😢

Vets do so much more than many realize. Many if our faithful will know that DVS provides care for strays and wildlife.
Whilst we do not get subsidies for the care we provide we are passionate about helping when we can.
Todays guest was a tiny microbat handed to Dr Sarah by Claire’s kindergarten teacher this morning.
Whilst they are super cute they should not be handled.
1/ because they are so tiny and fragile, so easily injured
2/ because they can carry Lyssa virus which can cause a disease similar to rabies (we don’t have rabies in Aus)
We have contacted the amazing carers from Fly By Night who will take the little one into care, rehab and release.
❤️We really do live in a wonderful world. ❤️ 🦇

Warning : David Attenborough type video attached.
Not for the faint of heart but we are so proud of the progress this little male Hobby Kite/Falcon is making.
Unable to use his legs at all 5 days ago he can now stand unassisted, hold his own prey (mouse) and feed himself.
So proud of him and we will get him back to the “wild” in no time.
Brought in from a local school this baby is why this job is the best in the world. She is a fledgling that has caused herself some mischief. She is on pain relief and had X-rays- nothing broken fortunately. Now to rehab him and when ready flight test before eventually releasing.
Yeah I know I call him a girl in the video but after checking the weight a bit is more likely. 🤷♀️😊
