Regular health checks and blood tests for senior pets are essential for early detection and management of age-related health issues. Here are some key benefits:

🦠 Early Disease Detection & Monitoring of Organ Function – Conditions like heart disease, kidney disease, diabetes, liver problems, and thyroid disorders are common in older pets. Routine bloodwork can catch these issues before symptoms appear.

🔥 Detecting Infections & Inflammation – A complete blood count (CBC) can reveal infections, anemia, or chronic inflammation, which may indicate underlying issues.

🩺 Managing Chronic Conditions – If your pet has ongoing health concerns, regular tests and health checks ensure treatments are working and allow adjustments if needed.

💊 Assessing Medication Side Effects – Many senior pets take medications, which can impact liver or kidney function. Routine testing helps ensure these treatments remain safe.

💦 Nutritional & Hydration Status – Blood tests can indicate deficiencies or imbalances that may require dietary changes or supplements.

🦷 Dental health - Regular dental checks are essential for aging pets because dental disease is one of the most common health issues in older animals.

❤️ Improved Quality of Life & Longevity – Proactive healthcare helps manage minor issues before they become major problems, leading to a healthier, more comfortable life for your pet.

Our team had an amazing time at the Veterinary Wellbeing Ball, a fantastic event that highlights the importance of mental health and support within the veterinary industry. It was an evening of connection, celebration, and reflection on the challenges faced by those in our profession.

A special mention to , an incredible initiative raising awareness for mental health and wellbeing in the veterinary and animal care community. Their work reminds us all to check in with each other and continue the conversation about mental health. ❤️🩵🐾

With consecutive high temperatures forecast in Victoria over the next few days, please be conscious of wildlife.

Just like us, native animals are vulnerable during hot weather and may experience heat stress.

Symptoms of heat stress in wildlife can vary between species. Common symptoms include panting, fanning of wings, and abnormal behaviours such as lethargy and disorientation. It’s also common for species to take risks in search of fresh water and shade – such as arboreal (tree dwelling) species coming to ground and nocturnal species active during the daytime.

If you see animals exhibiting these behaviours, please call our 24/7 Emergency Response Service on 03 8400 7300.

Firework Safety Tips for Pets: 🎆

Fireworks can be exciting for us, but they’re often overwhelming and frightening for our pets. Loud noises, flashing lights, and vibrations can cause stress, anxiety, or even lead pets to run away. By taking simple precautions, you can help keep your furry friends calm, safe, and comfortable during celebrations.

• Keep your pets inside: Fireworks can scare pets with their loud noises, causing them to panic and potentially run away. Keep them indoors and secure to prevent injuries or getting lost.

• Give them a quiet, safe place to relax: Create a calm environment away from windows and external walls. Close curtains and blinds to block out noise and flashing lights.

• Exercise them through the day: Physical activity before fireworks can help burn off energy and reduce stress, leaving them calmer and more relaxed.

• Use positive distractions: Provide puzzle feeders, stuffed toys, or play soothing background music to help keep your pets calm and distracted.

• Ensure microchip details and ID tags are current: Double-check your pet’s identification details to ensure they can be returned to you quickly if they get lost.

Stay proactive and keep your pets comfortable during firework celebrations! 🎆🎇

Not all holiday treats are safe for our furry friends! 🚫 This Christmas, be mindful of the following foods that can be harmful to pets:

🍫 Chocolate – Contains theobromine and caffeine, which are toxic to dogs and cats. Symptoms include - vomiting, diarrhoea, restlessness, increased heart rate, and in some cases, seizures.

🍇 Grapes and Raisins – These can cause kidney failure in dogs, even in small amounts. They are often found in fruit cake and other common Christmas recipes.

🧅 Onions, Garlic, and Chives – Common in holiday cooking, these can damage red blood cells, leading to anemia in both dogs and cats.

🥓 Rich, Fatty Foods – Turkey and chicken skin, bacon, ham, gravy, and other buttery/oily dishes can lead to pancreatitis, a serious and painful condition.

🍗 Cooked Bones – While they may seem like a treat, cooked bones can splinter easily, causing choking, internal injuries, or blockages in your pet’s digestive system.

🍭 Xylitol – Found in many of our favourite sweets, this artificial sweetener can cause a dangerous drop in blood sugar, leading to seizures or liver failure.

Keep your pets safe this festive season by sticking to their regular diet and avoiding table scraps. They’ll thank you with happy purrs and wagging tails! 🎄🎅🏽🐶🐱

If you suspect that your pet has eaten something toxic during our Christmas closure, please call the Melbourne Animal Specialist Hospital (MASH) on 1800 838 787. ☎️

Summer safety 🐾

Learn how to help prevent heat stress and keep your furry friends happy on hot days:

💧 Signs of Heat Stress
• Heavy panting
• Incoordination
• Restlessness
• Excessive drooling
• Very red gums
• Increased heart rate
• Collapse
• Lethargy
• Agitation
• Seizures
• Vomiting

☀️ Hot Weather Tips
• Check the concrete—if it’s too hot for you to touch for 10 seconds, it’s too hot for your dog!
• Use sunscreen for pink-nosed dogs.
• Always provide cool, fresh water and replace it daily.
• Avoid exercise during peak heat; walk early in the morning, late in the evening, or skip the walk all together if there is no appropriate time.
• Never leave pets in a car, hot room, or sun trap—heat stress can be fatal, especially for older dogs and brachycephalic breeds.

If you are concerned that your dog is showing signs of heat stress, call us or your local 24 hour hospital urgently.

Your pets rely on you to keep them safe—stay vigilant this summer! ⛱️
