🚨 Urgent Care Alert: Urinary Blockages in Male Cats 🐾

At Casey Pet Emergency, we want to bring awareness to a serious health issue that can affect male cats: urinary blockages. Understanding this condition can help you act quickly and get your feline friend the care they need. Here’s what you need to know:

🚩 What is a Urinary Blockage?
• Definition: A urinary blockage occurs when there is a blockage in the urinary tract, preventing your cat from urinating properly. This can be caused by crystals, stones, or inflammation.
• Why It’s Serious: If left untreated, a urinary blockage can lead to severe health issues, including kidney damage or failure.

🐱 Signs of a Urinary Blockage:
• Straining to Urinate: Your cat may go to the litter box frequently but produce little to no urine.
• Painful Urination: Signs of discomfort or pain when attempting to urinate.
• Blood in Urine: You may notice blood or a pinkish colour in your cat’s urine.
• Behavioural Changes: Increased vocalisation, hiding, or signs of distress.

🩺 What to Do If You Suspect a Blockage:
1. Act Quickly: If you see any of these signs, seek veterinary care immediately. Urinary blockages require prompt treatment to prevent complications.
2. Emergency Care: Bring your cat to Casey Pet Emergency or your local veterinary clinic right away if you suspect a blockage.

🔬 Diagnosis and Treatment:
• Examinations: We’ll perform a thorough examination and diagnostic tests, including blood work, ultrasound and possible x-rays, to identify the blockage.
• Treatment Options: Treatment may include catheterisation to relieve the blockage, medication, and dietary changes to prevent future issues.

🛡️ Prevention Tips:
• Hydration: Encourage your cat to drink plenty of water to help prevent urinary issues.
• Diet: Consider feeding a diet specially formulated to prevent urinary problems, as recommended by your vet.
• Regular Check-Ups: Routine vet visits can help catch potential issues early and keep your cat healthy.

If you have any concerns, don’t hesitate to reach out to us on 03 8790 1625

🔬 Why Blood Tests Are Essential for Your Pet’s Health 🩺

At Casey Pet Emergency, we believe that preventive care is the cornerstone of a happy, healthy pet. One of the most valuable tools in our diagnostic arsenal is a simple blood test. Here’s why regular blood tests are so important:

🩸 Early Detection of Health Issues
• Uncover Hidden Problems: Blood tests can reveal underlying conditions like kidney disease, diabetes, or infections before symptoms become obvious.
• Monitor Chronic Conditions: For pets with chronic illnesses, regular blood tests help us track the effectiveness of treatments and adjust care plans as needed.

🔍 Comprehensive Health Insights
• Assess Organ Function: Blood tests provide vital information about how well your pet’s organs, like the liver and kidneys, are functioning.
• Evaluate Overall Wellness: They help us check your pet’s overall health, including their red and white blood cell counts, which can indicate anaemia or immune system issues.

🐾 Tailored Care Plans
• Personalised Treatments: With detailed blood work results, we can create more personalised and effective treatment plans for your pet.
• Preventative Measures: Early detection through blood tests allows us to implement preventative measures to keep your pet healthy.

🏥 Routine Check-Ups
• Annual Tests: We recommend including blood tests as part of your pet’s annual check-up to stay ahead of potential health issues.
• Pre-Surgery Screening: Blood tests are crucial before any surgery to ensure your pet is healthy and ready for the procedure.

🧪 What to Expect
• Simple and Safe: The process involves a quick blood draw, usually from your pet’s leg. It’s minimally invasive and typically well-tolerated.
• Quick Results: Most results are available within a short period, allowing us to act swiftly if needed.

By staying proactive with blood tests, you’re giving your pet the best chance for a long, healthy life.

🐾 Dog Bite Wounds: What to Know and How to Act 🩺
Dog bites can be serious and require prompt attention to ensure your furry friend’s health and safety. At Casey Pet Emergency, we want to help you understand what to do if your dog suffers from a bite wound. Here’s what you need to know:

🔍 Recognize the Signs:
• Redness, swelling, or discharge around the wound
• Limping or reluctance to use a limb
• Pain or sensitivity at the bite site

🩹 Immediate Steps:
1. Clean the Wound: Gently clean the bite area with lukewarm saline solution.
(A cup of lukewarm water and a teaspoon of salt)
Do not use Dettol or alcohol, this will cause pain
2. Apply Pressure: If the wound is bleeding, apply gentle pressure with a clean cloth to control the bleeding.
3. Keep it Covered: Cover the wound with a sterile bandage to protect it from further injury or infection.

🏥 When to See a Vet:
• If the wound is deep, won’t stop bleeding, or shows signs of infection
• If your dog is showing signs of pain, distress, or changes in behaviour
• If the bite wound is from another animal as animal mouths contain high bacterial
Loads

🩺 Why Professional Care is Essential:
• Infection Prevention: Your vet will provide treatment to prevent infection and promote proper healing.
• Pain Management: We’ll assess and manage pain to keep your dog comfortable.
• Full Recovery: We’ll ensure the wound is healing properly and address any complications.

🔄 Remember: Dog bites can sometimes lead to more serious health issues, so early intervention is crucial.

If you have any concerns about a bite wound or need advice, don’t hesitate to contact us at Casey Pet Emergency on 03 8790 1625.

WOOF, CAN YOU GUESS WHAT I ATE?

Silly boy Choc got into something he should of earlier in the week.
He started vomiting and not feeling like his usually happy self.
His Mum bought him to Casey Pet Emergency for treatment and we agreed he was one sad boy!
Upon investigation, with comprehensive blood test and radiographs showed that poor Choc had a foreign body obstruction in his intestines and was very sick.
He was admitted into the hospital for stabilisation, intravenous fluids to help with him being very dehydrated and medications to help him feel better before he had an emergency surgery to help save his life!
Dr Vanessa and the team prepped Choc for his surgery and found that Choc had eaten a bunch of HAIRTIES! These had joined together in a bunch and caused an obstruction in a part of his intestines which also was causing issues with his pancreatis!
The hair ties were removed, and a biopsy was taken of the pancreatis to send to an external laboratory.
This poor boy was not only very sick because of this obstruction but he has caused a secondary issue of severe pancreatitis and an infection.
The recovery for Choc took a couple of days in hospital where he received intravenous fluids, intravenous medications such as antibiotic, gastro-protectants and some strong pain relief.
Slowing Choc started showing signs on improving, He started eating while in hospital, pain was being manage by a transdermal patch and oral medications.
The team updated Chocs family with the great news that Choc can go home!
Recovery for Choc was not over though, recovering from a major surgery and illness takes a number of days to weeks.
Chocs Mum updated the team that Choc was recovery well at home, eating and drinking and being fairly good at taking his medications the poor thing Aswell as the super cute photo of him recovering at home!
We love getting updates from our clients & patients when they are home (:

08/05/2024

Australia is home to over 10,000 mushroom species and whilst only a small percentage of these are known to be poisonous, all wild mushroom ingestions should be considered serious until proven otherwise.

Which ’shrooms are safe? Mix up some mushrooms in a pan and they enhance any meal with vitamins, minerals, and fibre. But determining which mushrooms are safe and which are toxic for dogs is a challenge, even for seasoned mycologists (you know, those fun guys and gals who study fungi).
Many toxic mushrooms closely resemble edible ones. Without expert knowledge, it’s nearly impossible to differentiate between them reliably. For instance, the deadly Amanita Phalloides, also known by the friendly nickname of Death Cap, can look strikingly like some edible varieties.
Poisonous mushrooms are incredibly difficult to spot. A common misconception is that certain colours or shapes indicate toxicity. Toxic mushrooms come in a variety of shapes and colours, just like non-toxic mushrooms.
The only truly safe way to prevent mushroom poisoning in dogs is to avoid allowing them to eat mushrooms altogether, especially those found in the wild.
Mushroom poisoning in dogs can manifest in various ways, depending on the type of mushroom ingested. Symptoms of mushroom toxicity may not show right away but be on the lookout for:

The symptoms of mushroom poisoning can take hours or even days to appear and can be fatal.
Diarrhea
Lethargy
Excessive shaking/tremors
Seizures
Vomiting
Liver failure

There are some things you can do to keep your four-legged friend safe from mushroom toxicity.

Regularly inspect your yard, especially after rainy weather, and remove any wild mushrooms.

During walks, keep your dog on a leash and monitor their sniffing and foraging behaviour.

It’s vital to monitor your pet closely and seek veterinary care at the first sign of distress.
If you think your dog ate a poisonous mushroom, don’t panic, but act fast.
Immediately remove any remaining mushrooms from your dog’s reach. Note any symptoms of poisoning and contact veterinary help. Quick action can make a significant difference in your pet’s recovery.

05/04/2024

There has been an increasing amount of cases of Feline Panleukopenia otherwise known as Feline Parvo Virus in the south-eastern area.

Feline Panleukopenia is a highly contagious viral disease which infects and kills cells that are rapidly growing and dividing, such as those in the bone marrow, intestines and even in developing foetuses.

Not all cats infected with feline parvovirus will show symptoms, but you should look out for:
• vomiting.
• watery diarrhoea with or without blood.
• high temperature early on.
• lack of appetite.
• lethargy and depression.
• stomach pain.

Cats can shed the virus in their urine, stools, and nasal secretions; infection occurs when susceptible cats come in contact with these secretions, or even the fleas from infected cats. An infected cat tends to shed the virus for a relatively short period (1-2 days), but the virus can survive for up to a year in the environment, so cats may become infected without ever coming into direct contact with an infected cat. Bedding, cages, food/water bowls, and the hands or clothes of people that handle the infected cat may harbor the virus and transmit it to other cats. It is, therefore, very important to isolate infected cats. Any materials used on or for infected cats should not be used or allowed to come into contact with other cats, and people handling infected cats should practice proper hygiene to prevent the spreading of the infection.

Prevention is vital to your cat’s health.
Vaccines offer the best protection for Feline Parvovirus infection. Vaccinations is just as important for strictly indoor cats as for indoor/outdoor cats because the virus is everywhere in the environment. Mostly young kittens receive their first vaccination between 6-8 weeks of age, and follow-up vaccines are given until the kitten is around 14-16 weeks of age. Adult cat vaccinations schedules vary with the age and health of the cat, as well as the risk of Feline Panleukopenia in the area.

Consult your veterinarian for advice on an appropriate vaccination schedule for your cat.
