People will tell you that they used to see these in many places throughout the Dandenong Ranges back in the day. There has been a recent reported sighting in Upwey! Most folk wouldn’t realise though that smack bang up against the hard urban fringe boundary, these incredible reptiles hang on in the face of much adversity. Lace Monitor - Varanus varius. Western face of the Dandenong Ranges on the steep, forested slopes below the towers. Whilst in general terms, this species is listed as ‘of least concern’, as in not overly threatened, in Victoria, the Lace Monitor is listed as ENDANGERED. 2 seen this day, one just under a metre, one around 1.2 metres. Very privileged to see them 🙏.

1….2…..3….4 Blotched Blue-tongues today! The two juveniles we uncovered in an area we were removing some thatchy material adjoining some nice, diverse ground storey vegetation, giving it some bare ground to drop seed in to and hopefully spread a little this spring. So glad it was a soft grass rake we were using! 😅

It amazes us how creatures like Blue-tongues can persist and obviously breed in pockets of bushland in the suburbs. Against the odds and the pressure from Foxes, Cats, Dogs, People, cheeky birds like Kookaburras, fragmentation. Clearly something is going right within this Ringwood East reserve. Smiles all round today 😊

Some of Japan’s finest right there.
They make some crazy saws at Silky!
No ulterior motive here, we just love using them.
