- They are often labelled a velcro-dog! This is because they can become very attached to their owner

🌡What is Heatstroke ?
Heatstroke is a condition where the body temperature reaches a point where it can no longer be regulated and if left untreated can cause organ failure and death.

🌡What causes Heatstroke?
high body temperatre as a result of no access to shade or water, vigorous exercise in the heat, left unattended in a hot car. Dogs primarily regulate their body temperature through panting so if the environment around them is too hot they are unable to self regulate their body temperature.

🌡What are the symptoms to look out for?
- Excessive panting or drooling
- Bright red gums
- Dry or sticky gums
- Lethargic or disoriented
- Vomiting

If your dog is experiencing symptoms of heatsroke please contact us or an emergency clinic immediately. It can be dangerous to cool a pet suffering from heatsroke down too quickly so please contact us on 97644116 for advice if needed. 📳

During the Summer months we remember to make sure our pets have access to water and shade but have you ever considered your pets paws? 🐾☀

Did you know that on a 25° day the asphalt can reach up to 52° and up to 65° on a 35° day? Walking on the hot concrete can cause severe burns on your dogs paws!

To make sure it is safe to walk try the 7 second test! Place the back of your hand on the concrete and if it is too hot to hold there for 7 seconds it is too hot or your dogs paws!

Try walking in the morning or evening to avoid the hottest part of the day or even choosing grassy areas over the concrete. 🌿☀🐕

Just a reminder especially given the hot weather recently to never leave pets in the car unattended. ☀🚙

Even when parked in the shade or with the window cracked, the temperature in a locked car can reach dangerous levels in the time that it takes to quickly run into the shops. At these temperatures a dog is unable to effectively regulate their body temperature and may experience heatstroke symptoms and even death.

If you see a dog locked in a hot car and can't immediately locate the owner please call 000 straight away.

With the hot weather today and lots more to come this summer it is important to keep our furry friends in mind and remember to make sure we keep them safe and comfortable during hot weather. Here are some helpful tips to keep your pets nice and cool this summer!

🌞 Keep fresh and cool drinking water available at all times

🌞 Avoid walking on hot concrete and try to walk in the early morning or in the evening

🌞 If your pet grazes on their food be careful not to leave leftovers out in the heat as it can spoil easily

🌞 Ensure your pet has access to adequate shade

🌞 Provide cooling mats or damp towels to lay on

🌞 For long hair cats or dogs, grooming over the summer months

🌞 Provide a shallow pool, sprinkler or hose them down during the hottest parts of the day
