Sorry i’ve been a bit quiet this week. After spending less than half an hour at a family function last weekend, I managed to face plant (tripping up a blind concrete step) and not only whack my head so hard on the concrete that I nearly knocked myself out, but I also hurt my back, ripped a good chunk of skin out of my shoulder, hand and knee, along with ultimately breaking my wrist 😭. So after spending 6 1/2 hrs in Emergency and a short stay at Frankston Hospital, I have spent the last 5 (very painful) days off slicing and dicing, in bed with Dr London 🐻 never leaving my side 🤎.

We just need to ensure that we're feeding the right kinds of “fully digestible” bones (as outlined in our post image), at least two to three times a week, with a bone free day in between to aid proper digestion.

BONES TO AVOID

“Weight Bearing (aka leg) Bones”
Like Drumsticks, Lamb Shanks and Large Beef Bones, Knuckles, Femurs & (too many) High Fat White Marrow Bones, as these bones are fortified with much larger amounts of Iron and zinc, which makes them much more likely to splinter and cause cracked teeth &/or Intestinal Blockages.

“Cooked Bones”
As the the cooking process tends to strengthen the proteins, making them a lot more resilient to digestion. This in turn makes the bone more brittle and prone to breaking into sharp pieces or shards and causing bleeding gums and internal puntures.

Tips
- Always supervise your dog while eating bones or longer lasting chews.
- Always feed your dogs bones that are (ideally) too big for them to attempt to swallow whole
- Never Break Or Cut into Smaller Pieces, as they can become a choking hazzard if not chewed down properly or swallowed whole.
- Do not feed your dog bones if they have cracked, broken or damaged teeth.
- When feeding your dog dehydrated raw or raw meaty bones, always feed every second to third day, to allow time for proper digestion of the bone.

The Truth About Sardines 4 Dogs 🐟🐶
We’re often asked what types of sardines are best to feed your dogs and cats and even though Fresh, Local (Wild Caught) Sardines will always be our first preference, for those times when fresh is not available or your dog or cat just doesn’t like the texture of fresh sardines, we thought we’d share a few of the pros and cons of canned sardines vs our locally wild caught dehydrated sardines.

Canned Sardines 🐟
- Canned Sardines are cooked at very high temperatures inside the aluminium can, which in turn kills off many of the valuable nutrients in the process.
- Some Brands of Canned Sardines are still lined with highly toxic BPA. Bisphenol A, known as BPA.
- Most Canned Sardines are very high in unnecessary/additional fats, due to being housed in large amounts of additional oil. When the natural oils in the fish alone, contain all of the natural oils your dog require.
- Most Canned Sardines contain high amounts of Added Salt, which can be detrimental to your dogs long term health.
- Most brands of Canned Sardines are made using “Imported” Fish. For example the cheaper brands of Canned Sardines, like the Woolworths Essentials brand are made in Thailand.
- Most Canned Sardines (unless clearly stated on the can) are also Factory Farmed not wild caught, as many would like you to believe.
- Most Canned Sardines are also scaled and filleted, which removes all of the most nutrient dense components of the fish, including the head, scales, internal organs and most of the Calcium Rich (Edible/Fully Digestible) Bones.
