We're both excited and sad to announce that our amazing nurse Shantelle, will be leaving us to pursue her dream of becoming a Veterinarian. ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ‡
Shantelle has been a vital part of our team, showing endless dedication, compassion, and skill in everything she does. Her passion for animals and care for our patients has made a lasting impact, and she will be deeply missed by all of us here at Blackburn Animal Hospital.
While we'll miss her presence, we're so proud of her as she embarks on this next chapter, heading to Perth to begin her studies in Veterinary Medicine. We have no doubt that she'll make an incredible Vet, and we can't wait to see all the amazing things she'll accomplish.
Good luck Shantelle - we'll be cheering you on every step of the way ๐ŸŒŸโค๏ธ

Meet Burger
Burger is a beautiful Samoyed who came to see us to have a lump on his lip checked.
Please don't ignore lumps that you find on your pet. They don't go away by themselves, and whilst common, they are not normal. It is recommended that you check your pet's body on a regular basis. This will allow you to become more familiar with what's normal and recognise any changes that occur.
Our vet will most likely perform a Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA). This is when we take a small, unintrusive needle and stick the bump to get a sample of cells. We will look at the sample of cells under a microscope and use the information to identify if there are any cancerous properties in the lump and if not, what kind of lump it may be. A majority of lumps on dogs are diagnosed with an FNA.
If the FNA is unable to identify what is causing the lump, we may sedate your dog to take a biopsy of the lump. A biopsy requires a part of the lump to be removed and examined closely by a laboratory.
Once we have the results of any of these common tests, we will come up with the best plan of action. For some cases, the plan will just be to keep an eye on the size and note if it starts getting smaller or larger; if the latter occurs then typically a secondary visit is necessary. For more serious cases we may recommend antibiotics or surgical removal.

Summer is a favourite time of the year for us, but can be dangerous for our pets. Below are some tips to keep your pet safe in hot weather. Heat stroke, aka heat stress, occurs when heat production exceeds heat loss in pets, leading to a high body temperature (hyperthermia) and, in some cases, thermal injury to tissues.
If left untreated, heat stress leads to multiple organ failure and death. It can be extremely fast. Heatstroke-related fatalities are widespread in pets housed outdoors during a hot day. Pregnant animals are at an increased risk.
Certain breeds of dogs and cats can be more affected by the heat, particularly those with shortened noses, and narrow airways such as Pugs, French bulldogs, Cavalier King Charles, and other short-nosed (brachycephalic) breeds. Also animals with a heavy coat such as Huskies and Pomeranian breeds. It may be of benefit to consider having any long-haired dogs or cats clipped by a groomer over the summer as a preventative measure.

There are several steps you can take to help keep your pet cool and healthy over the summer
If your pet is outdoors, please ensure that all outdoor enclosures are placed out of direct sunlight and that your pet has access to shade all day. Please keep in mind, the sun moves so what was a shady spot at 10am can be in full sun at 11am.
Provide fresh, clean water daily. On hot days you might consider putting an ice cube in the water dispenser.
Remove uneaten food daily. This should be routine but itโ€™s particularly important in the heat as it can attract flies.
Leave a wet towel for your pet to sit on.
Create a doggy Ice block by filling a container with water, sprinkle dry food, then freeze the night before.
A childโ€™s plastic seashell sand pit makes a great pool for a dog.
Place a stick in your water bowl, so wildlife can climb out.
Never leave pets unattended in a car.
Wait until the sun has gone down before you take your dog for a walk. If the ground is too hot for your bare feet for 5 seconds then itโ€™s too hot for your petโ€™s paws.

Some symptoms to keep an eye out for include:
Panting excessively
Moving sluggishly
Excess salivation, drooling
Reluctance to move
Acting woozy
Vomiting
Losing consciousness

If your pet is showing any of the above symptoms make sure you
Ensure your pet is breathing and remove it from the hot environment.
Wrap your pet in a cool wet towel. Avoid the temptation to apply ice cold water as this can cause hypothermia.
Seek veterinary attention immediately.

As the year comes to a close, we want to thank all of our amazing clients for another year of trusting us with your four- legged (sometimes 3- legged!) loved ones. We cannot do our jobs without your trust in us and your hard work at home. It can be hard to juggle life and a pet's needs, but working together with owners for their pet's wellbeing is what veterinary medicine is all about.

Keep an eye out for Noel (the Neuter Nuisance) when you come to see us. He's been spotted in all kinds of places.
