Hello and my name is Renee. Helping dogs and owners is my passion.
Our story starts in 1998 when Renee was having huge difficulties with my dog Odin. He was aggressive to dogs and people, and he had very bad separation anxiety and it was causing major issues in my life. And, did I mention that he was nearly 12 years old? And so my search began.
During my search, many different training establishments and methods gave very poor and sometimes shocking advice, it almost felt like a lost cause. No-one said they could help or make a difference to his behaviour. The very people who should have been offering help were the ones writing him off. There had to be answers. One day the answer came in an ad in the paper that said “Canine Communication Classes” for Alpha Dog Training, who offered the first ray of hope. From that point it took us only 4 ½ months to reach the advanced class.
After 3 months Odin’s aggression had gone, his anxiety radically improved - to think I’d been told he’d have to be put down! This experience turned into an obsession to help others to avoid the same frustration I had been through . In 1998 I enrolled in the professional dog trainer’s course (eventually leading to a position training dogs at Alpha Boarding Kennels looking after the Boarding School for Dogs service. This opportunity involved a lot of time working alone with a large number of dogs (often behaviourally difficult dogs due to the clientele they attract) which enabled me to develop my confidence, skills and practical understanding of training and behaviour.)
Milestones of being a trainer were being the first to pass the off lead advanced level 3 test with my Rottweiler Zac (it was such a buzz to have come that far together as a team), and becoming a senior trainer.
Along the way I’ve worked also at the Hallam Park Boarding Kennels where I honed my training and handling skills, where I developed a reputation among the staff and owners for being able to help with the difficult dogs. This experience and interests has lead to veterinary nursing at Dandenong Ranges Veterinary Hospital and Diamond Creek Veterinary Hospital and grooming work.
By 2000 I’d started conducting in home behavioural training, consultations and writing veterinary behaviour reports. I’ve had the joy to take and run puppy classes for a number of vet clinics including Dandenong Ranges Vet, Diamond Creek vet, Stud Park Veterinary Hospital (now known as Greencross), Beaconsfield Vet, Avonsleigh Vet, Eltham Vet Practice and Balwyn Vet surgery.
In 2003, I began trading under “Lifestyle Dog Training” (as the CLOS of training was then known as The Lifestyle Canine Communication System). In 2009 I started small group obedience classes and created café and social walking classes (more firsts) and had several Alpha professional trainers assisting me. As our reputation grew I was asked to take on or work with foster care dogs for Rescued with love, Save A Dog, Dog’s Domain and others. These organisations called me for many of their nutty and difficult dogs (because those are the dogs that often wind up in the foster care system and these organisations were admirably willing to attempt rehabilitation and rehoming). This also lead to pounds requesting behavioural assistance and written behavioural reports as well as being used as a dog lawyer’s expert reference for court cases.
I was regularly working with damaged dogs and created CCSL Canine Cognitive Sign Language for deaf dogs. These damaged dogs really stole my heart as I could see how stressed and unhappy they were, and I began investigating causes of cognitive dysfunction, which is what in time lead to developing “Canine Cognitive Connection.”
In 2015, I co-founded The Alpha Canine Centre, the Southern Hemisphere’s largest privately owned indoor dog training and day care centre, housing Alpha Dog Training classes and Alpha Doggy PlayCare.
In 2017 my attention was able to be refocused on what I love- helping owners and dogs in a more personal capacity, and I re-branded Lifestyle Dog Training to “The Dog Phenomenon” which refers both to the phenomenon that occurs when we change a dog’s behaviour through neuroplasticity and the phrase clients have used over and over again when I work with their dogs..
Since 1998 I’ve had the pleasure to conduct more than 2500 puppy classes, 2500 group classes and 3000 in home one-on-one lessons.
I’ve had the honor to write articles for online Australian Dog Lover Magazine as well as other publications. I often speak at vets helping veterinary staff to learn how to help owners and their dogs, and I’ve provided commentary on radio for behaviour interest stories. I’ve also worked alongside some notable vets in bringing awareness to health issues. I’ve also had the privilege to work with celebrities training their dogs.
With my passion for behavior and results, I’ve continued to educate myself and evolve through reading, study, lectures, courses, online courses, tafe courses, veterinary behavioural seminars, investigation and discussions. I’ve got some really exciting things coming soon which I can’t wait to share. Thanks for viewing our page and may you find among it motivating advise and cases of hope and transformation showing that phenomenal change is possible, just like I did all those years ago........
We look forward to helping you with your dog. Don’t give up.
