Sullivan and Sawyer have found their forever home! 🩵

These two sweet boys have come a long way. They were rescued in poor condition from the side of a rural road, but they’ve grown into confident and loving companions. Their new family shared, “they are affectionate, playful, and are great company.” 🥹

We’re so happy they’ve found the love and security they truly deserve!

If you haven’t already, it’s time to flip over your PUR calendar to the month of April 📆

This month we celebrate Dobby and his guardian, Kate 🤍

When we received a call from a vet clinic in 2018 about a puppy being dumped and heading to the pound that afternoon, we knew we had to act fast. We dropped everything and drove an hour to collect him. He was small, with the most loving puppy dog eyes and the biggest floppy ears that looked like they belonged to an elephant! His name had to be Dobby.

“Dobby has the most beautiful temperament with the cutest little quirks – he has his special couch spot, will always greet you at the door with a present (toy, shoe or cushion!) and is the BIGGEST fan of food.” - Kate

From an abandoned puppy to a much-loved family member, Dobby’s journey is a reminder of why we do what we do. His sweet nature, goofy habits, and endless love bring joy not only to Kate but to everyone who meets him. Rescuing Dobby changed his life—but as Kate will tell you, he’s changed hers too 🥹

It’s been a little while since we shared an update on Billy, our palliative foster kitty with thyroid cancer who has been with us for 18 months now!

Billy has been having far more good days than bad, and after a rough bout of diarrhoea a couple of weeks ago, he’s bounced back to being his cheeky, playful self! Chatting with his foster parents, pouncing on his brother Tom, and making the most of every moment.

While we know his journey is still fragile, we’re cherishing every single day that he’s happy, comfortable, and surrounded by love.

Billy is truly living life on his own terms, and we couldn’t be more grateful for the love and care he’s receiving from his foster parents 🙏

Every day with Billy is a gift, and we’re holding onto these beautiful moments 😻

Let us start by saying this:

Silence allows neglect and mistreatment to continue. When we ignore or excuse failures in animal welfare, we set a dangerous precedent. One where suffering is tolerated rather than prevented.

Accountability is not about blame; it is about ensuring that the animals, who have no voice of their own, are protected and cared for in the way they deserve.

We understand that many people feel strongly about the recent news coverage of the Strong Hearts Sanctuary court case. We do too. However, it is crucial to stay focused on the core issue: the welfare of the animals.

The conditions described and shown in photos (cages filled with faeces, no clean water, animals living in filth) are simply not acceptable under any circumstances. But especially not in an organisation whose purpose is to provide sanctuary and care.

The standard we walk past is the standard we accept.

Yes, rescues need support. No one is denying that. But if someone is overwhelmed, the responsible course of action is to ask for help, scale back, or stop intake before conditions deteriorate even remotely close to those in this case.

Passion and good intentions does not excuse what has happened here.

Rescue work is challenging, but the responsibility we take on is to ensure that animals receive the care they deserve.

The system needs regulation so that those running animal welfare organisations are properly equipped to manage the animals in their care. Without oversight, situations like this will continue to happen, and the ones who suffer most are the animals.

We are calling on the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC) to conduct a thorough investigation into the management and operations of this organisation and provide the public with an explaination on their overdue reporting obligations.

This is not about personal attacks or ignoring the challenges of rescue work. We can acknowledge that someone may have had good intentions at one point whilst demanding better standards and accountability.

Our hope is that this news is a turning point. It’s time for real change. Rescue work must be regulated, starting with mandatory qualifications and demonstrated skills for those running animal welfare organisations and in decision making positions. If we want better outcomes for animals, we must push for a system that ensures only those with the proper knowledge, resources, skills and capacity are in charge of their care.

At Project Underdog Rescue, we remain committed to the highest standards of care and ethical rescue practices. Animal welfare must always come first, and now is the time to enact real change to protect those who need it most.

Falcon & Phoenix haven’t had a single adoption application 💔

These special boys were rescued from a heartbreaking hoarding situation and arrived in foster care terrified, and unsure of the kindness of humans. But with time, patience, and love, they’ve blossomed into affectionate, gentle souls who now love human interaction 😻

🐾 Phoenix – The adventurous foodie! Outgoing, playful, and always first in line for meal time. Loves exploring, zooming around, and snuggling up when he’s not busy keeping an eye on dinner 🍽️💨

🐾 Falcon – The sweet, gentle lap cat. A little more reserved, but once he trusts you, he’s the ultimate cuddle buddy. Prefers cozy naps, soft strokes, and quiet companionship 🧡💤

These bonded brothers have been through so much together and must be adopted as a pair.

Phoenix is blind in one eye due to an old injury, but it doesn’t slow him down one bit! He also has arthritis and is on supplements to keep him comfy.

They’ve been waiting for so long, and we can’t understand why 🥺

They deserve a quiet, loving home where they can feel safe and cherished for the rest of their lives.

Could YOU be the one to change their story? 🙏

Sundae and Seymour have found their forever home! 🐾💖

These two sweethearts have come a long way. They were found abandoned near a rural road with 7 other kittens in harsh conditions, but they’ve blossomed into the happy, playful souls they are today.

Their new pawrents shared: ‘We love their super unique personalities that are really starting to shine through. Seymour was so shy and reserved when we first met him and now he’s full of beans. Sundae is just beautiful and so chill.’

We are so grateful they’re getting the love they deserve! 🩵

Resource guarding is a natural behaviour for dogs, and the way we handle it matters.

Putting your hand in your dog’s food or taking it away “just because” doesn’t teach trust, it’s bullying and it can actually make guarding behaviours worse.

Instead, focus on positive reinforcement, trade-ups, and building a strong, respectful bond with your pup 🐕

If you’re struggling with resource guarding behaviours, reach out to a qualified behaviour trainer that advocates for a approach 🩵

🐾 Community Pet Pantry Update 🐾

We’re always grateful for the opportunity to support pets and their people in times of need 🫶

Photo 1: This week, a donation went out to a family with a young kitten after their home was partially destroyed by a fire caused by a gas leak. They’ve been without hot water since the fire and won’t have it restored for another week, so we were happy to help with supplies for their little one. 💙

Photo 2: On the giving side, we received an incredibly generous donation of high-quality dog toys, equipment, and bedding (not pictured) from a fellow force-free animal welfare professional. This means more comfort and enrichment for doggies in need 🐕

Did you know our pet pantry doesn’t just supply food? We provide leads, collars, enrichment toys, treats, chews, parasite prevention, and more 🤗

If you have something to donate to someone doing it tough, please get in touch via our website.

Every little bit helps make a difference 🐶🐱💜

Note:
✔️ We accept unopened, in-date dog and cat food and pet items that are new or still in good condition.

❌ At this stage, we cannot accept fresh or frozen food, sheets, doonas, pillows or very bulky items.

Sunny’s Update ☀️

Sunny recently visited Animal Eye Care for a follow up on her eyes, and we’re thrilled to share some very good news—her cataracts are stable with the daily eye drops she’s receiving! She still has good vision, meaning surgery isn’t needed at this time. This is such a relief for our sweet girl, and we’re so grateful she continues to thrive 😻

However, along with the good news comes some heartbreak 💔 A potential adoption for Sunny has sadly fallen through, which has been absolutely devastating. We can’t understand how such a friendly, playful, and confident cat is still waiting for her forever home.

That said, we’ve also made a wonderful discovery—Sunny adores living with another young, friendly, and playful cat! 🐈

She’s recently moved into a new foster home with existing cats, and she’s absolutely loving their company. Watching her play, chase, and cuddle with her feline friends has shown us just how much she’d thrive in a home with another cat companion 🐱

Sunny truly is the light of every room she enters. She’s playful, adventurous, and full of personality, always ready to brighten your day with her warmth and charm 💛

Could you be the one to give Sunny the forever home she’s been waiting for? If you have another friendly, playful cat, she’d be over the moon to befriend them!

🌞 Apply now to adopt Sunny and let her bring endless joy into your life🌞

To find out more, ask questions, or apply to adopt, visit the ‘Adopt’ page on our website.

Suki & Sprout have found their forever home! 🏡💖

Their journey started in a heartbreaking way when they, along with 7 other kittens, were abandoned near a rural road. Some of them were so tiny and weak, they could barely walk, while others were already running around. The harsh conditions left them vulnerable, but thankfully, they were rescued just in time. They faced a tough start, battling illness and needing intensive care, including bottle feeding and constant medical attention.

Despite the odds, Suki & Sprout grew stronger with each day, surrounded by love and care. Now, they’ve found their forever family, and their new fur parent says, “I have two mad babies and I love it!” 🐱✨

We’re so happy to see this sweet duo start their new chapter, filled with love and happiness! 🌟

Keeping Noeline & Ghost together 💗

The weight of the world felt heavy on Noeline’s shoulders, but she refused to be crushed beneath it. As a single mother of two beautiful boys and a loyal dog, Ghost, she has faced more than her share of hardship.

Not being an Australian citizen made accessing support an uphill battle, and the scars of domestic violence ran deep—wounds that weren’t just physical, but emotional, psychological, and financial. Through it all, Ghost has been her rock, her protector, and her comfort. But with no income and no safety net, she found herself struggling to feed him.

When Noeline reached out to us, she had been making sure Ghost had something to eat—even if it meant giving him eggs or scraps of chicken because she couldn’t afford dog food. No matter how hard things got, she never gave up on him.

Through our community pet pantry, we were able to help ease her burden by providing Ghost with a large bag of dog food and some yummy treats to keep him going while Noeline works towards rebuilding her life.

Noeline’s love and resilience inspire us, and we’re grateful to be able to support her and Ghost during this challenging time—because no one should have to choose between feeding themselves and feeding their beloved pet.

The best and bravest girl, Cherry, came to stay at PUR HQ in our condos last week for some important pre-treatment checkups, including blood pressure monitoring and blood and urine tests 🩸

All of this is in preparation for her upcoming radioactive iodine treatment later this month 💊

Cherry was an absolute star during her stay, soaking up the love and care from our team and enjoying her favourite treats. We can’t wait to see her on the road to better health soon 🍒💪

If you haven’t already, it’s time to flip over your PUR calendar to the month of March 🍂

This month we celebrate Rosie and her guardians Jessie & Tom ☺️

Prior to her rescue in 2017, Rosie had been found wandering the streets and picked up by the pound on multiple occasions. Her previous guardian said she liked going for walks by herself and that they couldn’t contain her and didn’t want her back. It turns out they had no fencing and would leave her outside. Their loss became our gain - and Rosie’s too!

“Rosie changed the course of my life! She ignited my interest in dog behaviour and how to help dogs through their anxiety and fear using kind and gentle methods. Rosie is the best teacher I’ve ever had.” - Tom, Rosie’s dad.

Rosie’s adoption didn’t just change her life—it changed ours too. Through her, Tom discovered a deep passion for animal welfare, which led him to take on a bigger role in rescue. Today, he runs our animal rescue program and serves as the vice president of PUR, dedicating his spare time to giving dogs like Rosie the second chances they deserve 👏

Rosie may have been the one rescued, but in many ways, she’s been the one leading the way ever since 🥹

Our Story

Project Underdog Rescue is a not for profit animal rescue charity located in Melbourne, Australia. Our organisation is run entirely by unpaid volunteers who are dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating and successfully rehoming companion animals facing imminent euthanasia in pounds and shelters. We do not discriminate on breed, age or s*x. We take those that need us most. We pride ourselves on providing our animals with the same amount of love, attention and level of care we would give our own pets. Any specialised treatment recommended by our veterinarian will be provided to the animals in our care. We are based in Melbourne and are run via a network of foster carers. We do not have a shelter as we prefer to have our animals in loving foster homes. This allows them greater interaction with people and can encourage healthy socialisation with other domestic pets. It also gives us the chance to learn about each animals personality and provide him or her with any necessary training. We believe this gives our animals the best chance at a smooth transition into their forever home. We are registered with the Australian Charities and Not-For-Profits Commission and have Deductible Gift Recipient status (DGR). This means that all donations over $2 are tax deductible. We are run entirely by unpaid volunteers and receive no government funding so your donations are what we rely on. Our Mission: Rescuing, rehabilitating and successfully rehoming companion animals in need. Our Vision: For there to one day be a world where there are no more homeless pets. Our Values: Kindness: To demonstrate compassion for all living creatures and treat those how we wish to be treated. Respect: To communicate honestly and courteously in all our dealings. Integrity: To be fair and ethical in all our dealings. Leadership: To lead by example. Transparency: To be open and honest in all our dealings. Authenticity: To do what we say we do. Our Purpose: - To provide refuge for stray, abandoned and surrendered animals – primarily those facing imminent euthanasia in shelters and pounds. - To rehabilitate each animal in foster care and find them loving, safe and permanent homes. - To promote responsible pet ownership, animal welfare and no kill solutions.
