🐱🐾 Meet Charlie 🐾🐱

Charlie came in last week with a urethral blockage and had to stay with us for a few days after having surgery here to clear the blockage. We closely monitored him post-op, and we’re happy to see him recovering well!

Understanding Urethral Blockage in Cats 🐈‍⬛
Urethral blockage is a serious, life-threatening condition, especially in male cats. It occurs when the urethra—the tube through which urine exits the body—becomes obstructed, preventing urination.

Common Causes:
• Urinary Crystals or Stones: Can form in the bladder and block the urethra.
• Mucous Plugs: A build-up of mucus, protein, and cells.
• Inflammation or Spasm: Swelling or muscle spasms around the urethra.

Symptoms to Watch For:
• Straining to urinate with little or no urine
• Frequent litter box visits
• Crying out in pain
• Excessive licking of the ge***al area
• Lethargy or vomiting

Why It’s an Emergency:
Untreated, urethral blockage can lead to kidney failure or death. Immediate veterinary care is crucial.

Treatment Options:
• Flushing the urethra under sedation or anaesthesia
• Medications to manage pain and prevent future blockages
• Surgery in severe or recurrent cases

Prevention Tips:
• Encourage water intake to dilute urine
• Feed a balanced diet to prevent crystals or stones
• Regular vet check-ups, especially if there’s a history of blockages

Early intervention is key. If you suspect a urethral blockage, contact us immediately. Your cat’s health is our priority.

🐱🐾 Reducing Pet Stress: How Sedation Can Help During Vet Visits 🐾🐶

We understand that vet visits can be stressful for some pets. To ensure a calm and comfortable experience, we may recommend sedation in certain situations.

Sedation can be especially helpful for pets who are particularly anxious, fearful, or aggressive, as well as for those undergoing more complex or lengthy procedures. By sedating your pet, we can:

- Reduce fear and anxiety, making the visit less stressful for your furry friend.
- Ensure the safety and comfort of both your pet and our veterinary team.
- Perform necessary procedures more efficiently and effectively.
- Minimise the risk of injury to your pet during the examination or treatment.

Our team prioritises your pet’s well-being, using only the safest sedation methods tailored to their needs. We closely monitor them throughout the process to ensure their safety and comfort.

If you have any questions about sedation for your pet’s next visit, feel free to reach out. We’re here to help and ensure a positive experience for your beloved companions.

Maintaining your dog’s dental health is crucial for their overall well-being. Here are some tips to help keep those pearly whites in top shape:

1. Brush Regularly: Use a dog-specific toothbrush and toothpaste. Start slowly and gradually get your dog used to the process. Maxiguard Dental Wipes can help you introduce your dog to tooth brushing. For toothpaste, try Dentipet Cat and Dog Toothpaste, Pet Smile Toothpaste, or Prozym Toothpaste.
How to Guide on Brushing your Dog’s Teeth:https://todaysveterinarynurse.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/3/2019/02/TVN-2019_Brushing_Dog_Teeth.pdf
2. Dental Treats: Provide dental treats and toys designed to reduce plaque and tartar build-up. Products like OraVet Dental Hygiene Chews, Veggiedent Fresh Dental Chews, or Whimzees are great options.
3. Healthy Diet: Feed your dog a balanced diet that promotes dental health. Consider foods like Hill’s Canine Dental Care t/d or Royal Canin Dental. You can also offer bones such as chicken or duck wings, chicken necks, turkey necks, chicken or duck feet, roo ribs, and chicken frames. Always feed raw bones, never cooked. Always supervise your dog when they have a bone; however, be cautious, as bones that are too hard can cause fractures.
4. Water Additives: Add water additives to their water, such as Tropiclean Fresh Breath or Aquadent Fresh, to help maintain oral hygiene.
5. Regular Check-ups: Schedule regular vet visits for professional cleanings and to check for any dental issues.

Remember, good dental hygiene can prevent many health problems and ensure your furry friend stays happy and healthy! 🐾

🐾🦴 Caring for your Feline Friend with Arthritis 🦴🐾

As our cherished cats grow older, they may develop arthritis. Arthritis in cats is a condition where the joints become inflamed, leading to pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility. It is commonly caused by aging, injury, or genetic factors and can significantly impact a cat’s quality of life, but there are ways we can enhance their well-being and comfort!

Signs of Arthritis in Cats:
🐾 Reluctance to jump or climb
🦴 Decreased activity or playfulness
🐾 Limping or favouring certain limbs
🦴 Difficulty using the litter box
🐾 Changes in grooming habits, such as decreased grooming or over-grooming of painful areas
🦴 Increased irritability or aggression, especially when touched

How You Can Help:
1. Veterinary Care: Regular check-ups are essential for early detection and management of arthritis. We can recommend appropriate treatments.
2. Comfortable Environment: Ensure your cat has easy access to their litter box, food, and water dishes. Consider providing ramps or steps to help them access higher surfaces without jumping.
3. Warm and Cosy Beds: Orthopaedic beds can provide extra support and comfort for arthritic cats. Place their bed in a warm, quiet area where they can rest undisturbed.
4. Weight Management: Maintaining a healthy weight is crucial for reducing stress on your cat’s joints.
5. Medications & Supplements: There are various medications and supplements that can help manage pain and inflammation. We can recommend Solensia injections, along with anti-inflammatory medications, to alleviate pain and improve mobility. These medications need to be prescribed by a vet. Additionally, we offer a range of supplements like 4Cyte and Antinol Plus, which are specially formulated to support joint health. Consult with our vets to determine the best options for your pet.

When to Visit Us:
If you notice any signs of arthritis in your cat, don’t hesitate to schedule an appointment with us. Early intervention can greatly improve your cat’s quality of life and prevent further joint damage. Call us on (03) 9379 3438 to book an appointment with one of our vets.

🐾🦴 Caring for your Canine Friend with Arthritis 🦴🐾

As our beloved dogs age, they may develop arthritis. Arthritis can make daily activities challenging for them, but there are ways we can help improve their quality of life! Arthritis in dogs is a condition where the cartilage within the joints deteriorates over time. It’s a common condition in older dogs but can affect younger dogs as well, especially those with joint injuries or certain genetic predispositions.

Signs of Arthritis in Dogs:
🦴 Limping or lameness
🐾 Difficulty getting up or lying down
🦴 Reluctance to climb stairs or jump
🐾 Decreased activity or playfulness
🦴 Swelling or stiffness in joints

How You Can Help:
1. Veterinary Care: Regular check-ups are crucial. Our team can diagnose arthritis early and recommend treatments.
2. Weight Management: Keeping your dog at a healthy weight reduces stress on their joints.
3. Exercise: Gentle, low-impact exercise like short walks and swimming can keep joints flexible.
4. Comfortable Bedding: Orthopaedic beds provide extra support for aching joints. Ensure your dog’s bed is off the ground and in a warm, comfortable spot, especially during the colder months, to help reduce joint stiffness and discomfort.
5. Medications & Supplements: There are various medications and supplements that can help manage pain and inflammation. We can recommend Cartrophen and Beransa injections, along with anti-inflammatory medications, to alleviate pain and improve mobility. These medications need to be prescribed by a vet. Additionally, we offer a range of supplements like 4Cyte and Antinol Plus, which are specially formulated to support joint health. Consult with our vets to determine the best options for your pet.
