Is your dog trying to tell you something? Are they slow to rise or struggling to jump onto the couch? These signs often go unnoticed and can be linked to osteoarthritis pain or the development of arthritis for your beloved pet.

Arthritis is a painful joint disease that ~40% of dogs silently suffer with.
Here at Frankston Heights Veterinary Centre, we offer treatment that can relieve this pain and assist your dog in getting back to their usual self. Visit us in the clinic to find out how you can help your dog get back to their usual self.

While today's weather might be more suited to ducks than dogs, there are still a number of things you can do to keep your pooch entertained.

Homemade Enrichment*

Cardboard boxes: Place a treat inside a box, fold it up and let your dog figure out how to get to the treasure.

Plastic bottles: Drop a few treats inside a plastic bottle. (Make sure to remove any labels, lids, or small parts)

Empty toilet paper rolls: Put treats inside the roll, fold up the ends, and hand it over!

Egg cartons: Pop a couple of treats in an egg carton and close it. Let your dog figure it out.

Old towels: Lay it flat, throw some treats in the middle, then roll it up into a pretzel. Your pup will do the rest!

☔️🦆🌧 While today's weather might be more suited to ducks than dogs, there are still a number of things you can do to keep your pooch entertained. 🐕🐾

Old towels: Lay it flat, throw some treats in the middle, then roll it up into a pretzel. Your pup will do the rest.

Nosework Games

Cup game: Grab three cups, place a treat under one, and ask your dog ‘which one?’. When they sniff the right one, praise, lift the cup and let them have their reward. When they are confidently finding it, start moving the cups around before asking “which one?”

Which hand? Put both hands behind your back, and hold a treat in one. Offer both closed fists to your pup and ask them ‘which one?’.

Brush Up on the Basics or Teach Them a New Trick

A drizzly day is the perfect opportunity to brush up on their basic commands, such as sit, stay, down and wait.

New tricks could include shake (or high-5), spin, back up, and bow. You could also try teaching them the names of some of their toys.

Create an Indoor Obstacle Course

An indoor obstacle course can be a great way to burn off some steam.

Start with something simple, like a low step or stool for them to climb onto (or even a large book for our smaller friends), and build up to more complex obstacles, such as a broom propped between 2 chairs for then to jump over, or duck under.

Be sure to keep any activity fun for your dog! Use lots of treats (for dogs that need to be watching their weight, make sure you take this into account) and verbal praise. If they're showing signs of frustration, the chosen activity may not be right for your dog.

Always try to end on a positive!

*These types or enrichment should be always be supervised. If your pet is prone to eating things they shouldn't, please avoid these activities!

Let us know if you try any of these activities today!

💛 This Sunday is the 6th Annual 💛

Flynn's Walk's mission is to bring together the community, encourage meaningful conversations, and spread awareness of the mental health challenges faced by veterinary and para-veterinary professionals in their line of work.

In Australia, one veterinarian dies by su***de every 12 weeks - and vets are four times more likely to take their own life when compared to the general population.

We currently have a display of Flynn's Walk merchandise available to purchase in the clinic, with all proceeds going to this invaluable resource.

❓️Did you know that head shaking isn't always a sign of an ear infection? 🐕👂

Meet Hunter, a sweet boy who visited us recently for significant head shaking.
Upon exam, Dr Erin was able to see the very tip of a grass seed sticking out of Hunter's right ear canal.

After a short sedation, the team managed to relieve Hunter of not one, but EIGHT pesky grass seeds (5 of which were in his LEFT ear 🤯).

Now, Hunter is back to his tail-wagging self, ready to conquer the park (minus the grass seeds, of course!).

Remember, even the smallest invaders can cause big problems for our furry friends. If you notice your pet shaking their head, scratching their ears, or acting uncomfortable, don't hesitate to bring them in for a checkup! We're always here to help your furry family members feel their best.

⁉️ Have you received a reminder for an appointment you don't recall making for your pet?

⚠️ Don't worry, it's not a mistake!

At Frankston Heights Vet, we routinely pre-book next year's vaccination appointments in advance. 🗓

We know that life gets busy, and sometimes appointment reminders slip through the cracks. This is our way of ensuring your four-legged best friend doesn't miss out on their essential vaccinations.

🚨 If, when you receive your first reminder text, two weeks before your pet's appointment, the time no longer suits you, please call us to reschedule. 🚨

Here's why we pre-book:

Peace of mind : No more scrambling for a last-minute appointment and risking missed or late vaccinations.

Stress-free planning: Schedule your appointment around your busy schedule, ensuring it fits both you and your pet's needs.

Priority care: Pre-booking helps us prioritise appointments and ensure your pet receives timely vaccinations.

💥 Remember, keeping your pup healthy is a team effort, and we're always here to help.
