Please enjoy my rant on sensitive shampoo's.
Shampoos are not create equal and are often formulated with with human in mind, not the dog, despite the dog being the end recipient.
This means that the products are often more about being super cleansing and smelling nice for days, as opposed to being good for the dog's skin and coat.
While this may sound appealing to the human, this spells disaster for the dog.
The dog wants a gentle, light scent and needs a hydrating formula for their skin and coat to stay healthy.
What is sensitive skin?
Sensitive skin always refers to an underlying condition. If your dog has a reaction after coming into contact with a product, it is rarely the dog's fault and they wouldnt/shouldnt be neccessarily deemed "sensitive".
Dogs with diagnosed Dermatitis or other skin conditions will have sensitive skin.
If you're looking for gentle products - for whatever reason, I have used and trust the following brands:

Some of which can be purchased from my online store π
To all the beautiful dogs I've had to say goodbye to and all the owners who chose me for their final grooms π
I have not forgotten and am forever grateful.

What tips do you have for trimming your dog or puppies nails?
Your dog is meant to shed, sorry not sorry. We need to stop βοΈ going crazy with the brushing. I have seen lots of damaged coats from using harsh tools too frequently.
It's unnecessary, and it could be pulling out live hairs that are not yet ready to come out.
Use an appropriate tool until your dog's coat feels lighter or the knots have been removed, then stop!
Respect your dog's beautiful coat and skin π
If you're not sure what an appropriate tool is for your dog, ask your groomer π

This very simple skill will save your dog from becoming confused and stressed out in new situations.
There are so many moments that require Pressure and release, I truly believe you are doing a disservice to your dog if you haven't taught them how to turn off the Pressure.
It's used differently in different situations, but the outcome is the same.
Examples:
- Loose leash walking
- asking your dog to move
- asking your dog to get into the car
- asking your dog onto the scales
- asking your dog to stand
- asking for your dog's paw
- asking your dog to get off the couch for a guest
And so on.
A dog that doesn't understand what is being asked quickly becomes confused and then stressed out as they don't know how to stop the Pressure until we teach it.
Side note: you can (and should) reward your dog after they've done what you've asked. That leads to an understanding, and they won't be confused or stressed about what you're asking of them in future.
As always, if you need help, seek out a reputable balanced trainer π

The best way to clean your dog's ears is, unfortunately, the least comfortable way.
My way: πββοΈ
Wrap a tissue around your index finger.
Apply the cleaning solution to the tissue/your finger.
Massage the base of the ear while you insert your finger and wipe all around the ear opening.
This works because: π
1. There's no cool liquid being squirted into the dog's ears - uncomfortable and surprising sensation.
2. Massaging the base of the ear feels nice - dog might not realise you're cleaning their ear.
3. Even if you do a terrible job, you can try again another day because your dog hasn't run away scared of you.
πΆ Did you try this? Did it work for your dog?
Add any ear-cleaning tips below to help other dog owners π
This ties in well with my excessive brushing video from last week.
Often after a groom your dog will have a temporary increase in shedding. Remember that the skin has been massaged and stimulated and space has been created, giving you a beautiful free-flowing coat as opposed to the compacted, tight coat they may have walked in with.
So don't stress; this is temporary and will lighten after about 24 hours. Brushing until no more hair comes out is unnecessary, uncomfortable and potentially damaging to both skin and hair.

Ear plucking is needed in some individuals to keep their ear canal clear, allowing for better airflow.
Failure to pluck, when needed, results in the accumulation of dirt, wax and hair.
This can lead to matting, which is difficult to remove from the inside of a dog's ear, and ear infection.
If your dog is telling you it hurts, you're doing it wrong, or the hair you're pulling is not the correct hair to pull.

Dogs are not frogs...
I'll say it a million times if I have to because I don't want anyone to contribute to their dog's mobility issues. If you allow this, you are weakening your dog's knees!
Why is this dog so relaxed?
The remedial massage aspect of a Myotherapy session taps into the Parasympathetic nervous system, which encourages the mind to rest.
When in this state, the body can heal itself better π
Myotherapy is not just a "nice treat" for our dogs; it is an extremely effective modality for improving the function of many bodily systems.
Want to know more? We can help.
Due to his play style, Tyler is always tight in his chest, neck and shoulders. To maintain his mobility we use massage and targetted exercises which he very much enjoys π₯°
This grain-free crusade has to stop.
Some grains are good, others are not. Sprouted grains are super nutritious and can be added to your dog's diet occasionally for a pop of concentrated nutrients. Unsprouted grains, so just grains, would need to be cooked before being fed as they contain enzyme inhibitors that will prevent digestion. Once they are cooked, their nutritional value decreases, which is why sprouted grains are best.
Since companion dogs still have the same digestive system as their wild ancestors, feeding some grain (particularly sprouted grains) has some benefits as they will have eaten the stomach contents of their herbivorous prey and will have ingested all kinds of partially digested plant content - including grains. I am NOT saying grains should make up a large portion of your dog's diet!
While I'll never recommend dry dog food (again), it's important to at least be informed about what you're feeding your dog so you can make up your own mind. Grain-free kibble formulas are often filled with legumes instead of grains, marketed as being healthier for your dog or better for sensitive stomachs.
However, nutritionally speaking, if you are feeding legumes, you should add roughly the same amount of grains to the meal and vice versa. This balances out both of their nutrient deficiencies. So, if you choose a grain-free diet that is probably then filled with legumes, your dog is most likely missing out on a better-quality protein.
Remember that the quality of the ingredient is just as important as the ingredient itself. If you'd like to try sprouting some grains for your dogs, let me know in the comments, and I'll make a tutorial on that π Including where I source my grains from.
Grooming ASMR anyone?
Charlie tends to be anxious-excited, so I often have no music when he comes in. Although, I usually end up singing to him.
You can see how engaged he is with me and how I'm able to keep him calm while still letting him be a dog and have some fun.
In December, I shared a little teaser video of this dog, Khaleesi, who had a rather large matt inside her ear. I totally forgot to share the other half of me actually getting the mat our of her ear - so here it is.
.
I think these videos are important because it's easy to think of a groomer as someone who just washes and cuts hair, but more often than not, we actually have a fair bit of work to do that doesn't directly involve washing and making dogs pretty.
Khaleesi is a breed that grows long hair inside her ear, and so it is common for her to have some debris and dirt inside. This time, it was stuck deep into the ear canal, and it had become entwined with her hair which created a thick matt.
I tried quite a few different methods to gently remove it, but it was just too deep.
In the end, I needed to use Haemostats to reach the base of the knot and pull it out. Had I not done this for her, she would have had to go to the Vet. If this was hurting, I would have left her to go to the vet, but luckily, it was attached to her "pluckable" hair. That means the particular ear hair had a short root system, and she wouldn't have felt anything; it was more annoying than anything.
When I worked at a dog grooming/training/daycare facility, the types of dogs that needed special consideration were either elderly or had been injured. As time went on, more and more dogs were having mobility issues. It took me a while to realise this, and it wasn't until I opened my own business that I realised even dogs I had groomed from puppies, with no clinical injuries or fear of being groomed, were developing mobility issues.
.
Difficulties standing on three legs, difficulties giving me their paw, lots of fidgeting, inability to rotate as they should - this wasn't stemming from fear of being groomed; these dogs were actually incapable of normal movement. I am shocked by how many dogs are unable to move as they should, and I want to help as many dogs as I can. I want to educate owners on correct exercise and activities to prolong their mobility, and I want to teach owners how to spot issues so they can be fixed before they turn into injuries. π
Luring is great, but patience is better.
I can tell by looking at your dog's conformation that they do this, and I can feel it in their muscles!
Don't forget to keep your dog's hindquarters strong! Try these simple tips at home to prevent fatigue and subsequent injury.
I've always wanted to make this video because their are too many people using this brush wrong and unknowingly damaging their dog's coats!
