It’s 𝗣𝗲𝘁 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗪𝗲𝗲𝗸, celebrating the unconditional love, joy and happiness that our pets bring to our lives. When you welcome a pet into your home, they truly become part of your family. And when you bring them along to our vet clinic, they become part of our Moorabbin Veterinary Hospital family.
So this week we’ll be showering all the pets that come through our doors with extra cuddles, treats and love – and we encourage you to do the same with your pets. They deserve it.

VALE | We would like to share the tale of Yarra, one of our lovely patients at MVH. Yarra was a very much loved member of her family, though before she came to live with her owners, she led a very interesting dog life!
Yarra was born in October in 2005, and she was trained to be an Australian Federal Police (AFP), Firearms Explosives Detector Dog (FEDD). She was in service by 2007, and eventually retired at the grand age of 9.5 years. Yarra was retired much later than usual, as she was so good at her job!
Yarra received a medal, an Australian decoration for canines, for achieving 5 years of active service (quite a feat when you are a dog!)
Yarra has worked all over Australia, attending many important venues such as Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), Parliament House Canberra and airports. She was also used in counter terrorism raids, and used in search warrants hunting for guns and explosives.
Yarra's owner (Trish) is also an AFP officer, though she says not nearly as clever as Yarra! One of her last jobs was finding a gun on a search warrant, it was hidden deeply at the back of a cupboard and would not have been located without her excellent nose!
The AFP dogs are rewarded with a rolled up towel (rather than a treat, oddly it works!), when they find what they are looking for. Yarra transformed the love of the rolled up towel for a teddy when she came to live with Trish. Consequently, she spent many hours carrying a teddy, even whilst walking in the neighbourhood!
Trish says that Yarra was proud, resilient and stubborn, all qualities which made her a highly successful career girl, and a badly behaved pet!
Trish believes that all pets are special, though Yarra was larger than life, and her house is now empty and quiet without her. She says it will take a long time to get used to the silence and the lack of chaos she created!
The team at MVH send our condolences and love to Trish and her family, we are thinking of you at this difficult time. X
