Only 3 days till Christmas๐ŸŽ„
Although this is a time to let your hair down ( and your tail wag), there is a 372% increase in emergency pet visits during the Christmas period. Therefore we would like to remind everyone about the common foods that can be toxic to our dogs during the holiday season.
Here are some tips and tricks to keep your dog safe during Christmas season:
๐ŸŽ…Make sure you check the ingredients of any food before giving it to your dog, lots of Christmas foods can have extremely harmful ingredients such as chocolate, sultanas, grapes, raisins and high salt levels which can cause kidney damage.
๐Ÿง‘โ€๐ŸŽ„Do not give dogs rawhide or cooked bone. Rawhide can cause intestinal blockages and toxicities. If you are going to give your dog raw bones to enjoy, make sure you are supervising them the whole time as these can pose as choking hazards.
๐ŸŽ…Do not give dogs left over Christmas dinners as these can contain highly fatty foods and this can cause stomach pain, diarrhoea, vomiting and pancreatitis (which can be fatal). Instead, set aside dog safe treaties as an alternative.
๐Ÿง‘โ€๐ŸŽ„Although not food, dogs eating pine needles from the Christmas tree, drinking stagnant Christmas tree water, eating wrapping paper and ribbons, Christmas plants such as mistletoe and hibiscus, and swallowing batteries and toys can be fatal. Therefore, donโ€™t let your dog have access to these items. You can use a playpen around the Christmas tree to prevent your dog from having access to these items.
๐ŸŽ…As the heat is increasing, be mindful of heat stroke.
Ensure your dog has fresh water at all times, access to the shade and avoid vigorous exercise during the heat of the day.
๐ŸŽ…If you have people coming over Christmas Day ensure your dog has somewhere quiet to go if they need a break where no one can come disturb them.

With a scorching 43ยฐC day hitting Melbourne tomorrow, we wanted to take a moment to share some vital tips to keep your dog cool and safe this summer!

Did you know the survival rate for a dog with heat stroke is only 50%? ๐Ÿ˜ฑ Just a 2ยฐC increase in body temperature can trigger heat stroke, and a 4.5ยฐC rise can cause organ failure. 15 minutes is all it takes for heat stroke to become fatal. Thatโ€™s why itโ€™s so important to act quickly and keep your pup cool!

Certain dogs are more at risk, including:
๐Ÿ• Short-nosed breeds (like Bulldogs, Pugs)
๐Ÿ• Long-haired dogs
๐Ÿ• Brachycephalic (flat-faced) breeds
๐Ÿ• Puppies under 6 months
๐Ÿ• Elderly or obese dogs
If your dog fits into one of these categories, extra care is needed to ensure their safety in the heat.

Extra Tips for Keeping Your Dog Cool:
โ„๏ธ Frozen Treats: Freeze some dog-friendly treats like water, broth, or peanut butter for a cool snack.
๐ŸงŠ Cooling Mats: Consider getting a cooling mat for your dog to relax on during hot days.
โฑ๏ธ Shorten Outdoor Time: On extremely hot days, limit outdoor time and focus on indoor activities.
๐Ÿ’‡โ€โ™‚๏ธ Grooming: Regular grooming helps remove excess fur, which can trap heat. Make sure to brush your dog regularly to keep their coat cool and tangle-free. However, avoid shaving long-haired dogsโ€”some breeds need their coat for sun protection and temperature regulations.

The Canine Clubhouse - Our Story

The Canine Clubhouse is a premium doggy daycare centre, run by highly qualified dog trainers who are avid dog lovers! (with over 30 years experience in Dog and Behaviour Modification training.)

Your doggo can come here to hang out, play with mates, learn, and have fun!

We have been running the clubhouse in Thomastown since January 2019, providing services different from any other doggy Daycare or training centre because our staff have extensive history in identifying and resolving behavioural issues including dog - dog aggression and socialisation.

We give only the best services for your doggy! Including doggy daycare, private consultations, puppy school, obedience classes, social classes, Rally- O, trick training classes, Canine first aid (including CPR), and workshops with industry-leading professionals.
