Last night nurses Annee and Rachel stayed at the clinic after it closed to participate in a continuing education evening presented by Zoetis, to learn about and better understand heart conditions and considerations during anaesthetics. There are always advances in the veterinary world and it is important that we all learn so we can better care for your pets.

We recommend annual blood tests for senior dogs eight years of age and above. Why? 🐕

Regular blood tests allow us to detect and manage any developing organ issues (such as kidney or liver disease) earlier. They also help us to advise on the safest medication options for your pet for the treatment of other health conditions (such as arthritis) and select the safest anaesthetic protocols when they undergo common procedures (such as dental cleans or lump removals). 🩸

In short, regular blood tests help us to more effectively support your pet’s health, rather than just “stabbing in the dark!” 🌟

“My old cat seems healthy, so they don’t need an annual vet check, right?” 🐱

Even if your senior cat appears to be fighting fit, we still recommend a veterinary assessment every 6–12 months for those eight years old and above.

Regular checks allow us to advise on proactive care for dental disease, arthritis, and “invisible” issues such as high blood pressure. This saves you money in the long term and, more importantly, helps your pet to live their healthiest and most comfortable life. ❤️

Are you tempted to jump on the probiotics bandwagon for your pet? 🐾

Whilst pet probiotic products may not always fulfill dramatic marketing promises, they are a useful aid for supporting your pet’s gut health, which in turn, can improve their general wellbeing.

Probiotics can be particularly helpful for pets:
✅ Who have just completed a course of antibiotics
✅ With chronic gut conditions (such as food allergies), who are prone to imbalances of their intestinal bacteria

For more information on pet probiotics, consult our balanced veterinary team! 🌟

Have you heard of heart murmurs? These atypical heart sounds are caused by changes to the normal blood flow through the cardiovascular system and can be detected with a stethoscope. 🩺

Murmurs in dogs can be caused by issues affecting the heart (e.g. a leaky valve) or other health conditions such as fever or anaemia (low red blood cells).

The good news is that heart murmurs don’t always require treatment. So, if we detect a murmur in your pet, don’t let your heart skip a beat ❤️ – let our experienced team make recommendations on whether any follow-up is required.

All dogs love going for walks. However, not all dogs have stress-free walks. 🚶‍♂️🐕

If you have a dog-reactive or generally anxious dog, walking the neighbourhood can be stressful for all involved.

Take steps to reduce this stress – walk during quieter times of the day, avoid getting too close to other dogs if your pet is fearful and discuss treatment options with your vet. Consider engaging a positive-reinforcement dog trainer for tips and tricks to make walks stress-free. 🐕‍🦺

For help with managing your dog’s anxiety, book a consultation with us today.

Moving houses can be a stressful experience for everyone in the household. While some dogs are pretty adaptable, others will find the experience of shifting homes pretty stressful. 📦

You know your dog best, so if they are prone to anxiety, it’s best to get ahead and chat to your vet about medications and other strategies that might be appropriate. Like any big change, take it slowly if possible, and introduce your dog to their new home well ahead of time! 🐾

Learning to cope alone is an important skill for all dogs. Just like toilet training during puppyhood, dogs also need to develop coping skills for being left alone, so they don’t bark or become destructive. 🐕

You can help by keeping a regular schedule, providing treats and chew-proof toys, and ensuring they get regular walks to burn off energy and toilet appropriately. 🏡 There are plenty of great resources available to help you house-train your dog.

If you have a dog with ear infections, you know how tricky it can be to administer twice daily ear medication for weeks at a time. 🐶

The best way to avoid the struggle is to associate ear medication with something positive, such as treats. However, some dogs can still become averse to medication.

If you’re struggling with your dog’s ear medications, chat to one of our vets about alternatives, as there are now once-off ear medications that can be administered at the clinic. 🏥

It’s kitten season, so maybe you’ll be bringing home a new family member this summer! 😺

Kittens are generally fun and adaptable creatures, however, there are steps you can take to make their transition into a new home easier. Ensure they have everything they need where they can access it – litter box, water bowls, food bowls, toys, beds, scratching posts and hiding places. Introduce them to other pets slowly, and don’t let them out of the house until they are settled. 🛏️

If you want to learn more about settling your new kitten, get in touch with us today!

Cats are fastidious groomers, with undergrooming often a sign of illness, pain or other problems. However, sometimes cats can overgroom. 🛁 When cats groom too much, they can leave patches in their coat and cause skin irritation.

Overgrooming can be caused by a number of conditions, such as stress, external parasites like fleas, allergies or behavioural issues like OCD. 🐾

If your cat grooms too much, contact us today to find out why and get them help.

Have you ever wondered why cats, who are carnivores, love to eat grass (even though they often vomit it back up again)? 🌿

While we don’t know for sure, it’s been suggested that cats may eat grass for a number of reasons, and not just because they are feeling unwell. Although they can’t digest grass, cats may eat it to ease digestion (adding fibre to diet), for vitamins like folic acid or just simply because they enjoy the taste and texture of grass. 🐱

Curious about your cat’s behaviour? Ask us during your next visit!

Introducing your dog to a new puppy pal should be fun. However, we all know that not all pets get along, particularly if it’s their first time meeting. 🐾

To prevent any faux pas, make sure to always introduce new dogs slowly and on neutral ground (such as the local park). You know your dog best – if they are the life of the party, it probably won’t take long for friendships to be made. However, if they are a little introverted or standoffish, take extra time for intros.
