Freaky Friday Tale 2: Black Dogs ⚫

You might be wondering - what's so scary about black dogs? Many dogs have black fur, such as Rottweilers, Black Labradors and Doberman Pinschers.

However, the black dogs we're referring to today aren't just your adorable dogs. We're referring to the apparitions also known as black dogs. According to folklore, black dogs are often associated with

One of the earliest known sightings of a black dog dates back to 856 AD in France. Since then, there have been many reincarnations of the black dog. The black dog is often associated with the harbinger of death based on early accounts. However, there are also occurrences of black dogs being guardians.

In 1577, in the small town of Blythburgh, UK, a black dog named Black Shuck was sighted in the town's church. On one rainy evening, Black Shuck rushed through the Holy Trinity Church at the sound of thunder. It killed two people and toppled the church's steeple. As Black Shuck made its exit, it left scratch marks on the church door which are still present today.

Another encounter of a black dog has been recorded in the Hanging Hills near Meriden, Connecticut. The earliest sighting of the black dog in the area dates back to 1898. It is said the dog doesn't produce any sound when it barks or leave any pawprints behind. Legend has it that seeing the dog once brings someone joy, a second viewing brings a warning and a third time brings death.

Overtoun Bridge is a historic bridge in Dumbarton, Scotland that was completed in 1895. This bridge has developed a dark secret in recent times - dogs have been unexplainably jumping off the bridge about 50 feet down to their deaths since the 1950s. This bridge is also infamously known as Dog Su***de Bridge.

There are a few theories as to why dogs jump off this bridge:

1️⃣ Mink: This is the most commonly accepted theory. Since the scent of a mink is so strong, dogs are naturally lured towards them. Is the attraction strong enough to cause them jump off a bridge though?

2️⃣ Curiosity: As the world from a dog's point of view is very limited compared to ours because of their height, they are curious to see what's on the other side. This is why dogs seem to jump off from the same spot, where there is a ledge short enough for them to hop on and over. It just so happens that a 50-foot drop is waiting for them.

3️⃣ Paranormal activity: Locals tell stories about the White Lady of Overtoun, who is believed to be a grieving widow that lived in the Overtoun House. It is rumoured dogs can sometimes see her spirit at the edge of the bridge which causes dogs to leap towards her and over the bridge.

On this special International Dog Day, we’re celebrating the unbreakable bond between us and our furry best friends! ❤️

For me, this is a chance to remember Schatzie who crossed over the rainbow bridge a few years ago. I sadly couldn't be there during and after her final days as most of the world still closed their borders then.

Growing up, she was often my source of joy, comfort, and endless laughter. From playful antics to quiet cuddles, every moment with her is a reminder of why dogs truly are a person’s best friend.

They gather all sorts of dander and bring them into your bed, which can cause allergens to anyone sleeping in the bed.
