Mitcham Pet Hospital was first established in the early 1980's as Mitcham Veterinary Clinic. Since 1988, the emphasis has been on preventative care and client service. In 1999, after a major up-grade we renamed ourselves as Mitcham Pet Hospital, and jumped into the 21st century. Extensive building and renovations significantly expanded our capability to deliver first class service and the best pet care possible with modern technology and facilities.

HEAT STRESS IN PETS (Adapted from RSPCA Australia, 2023)

With the hot weather this week please keep yourselves and your pets cool and safe from the high temperatures.

PREVENTION
Limit exercise to early mornings before it gets hot or late afternoon/night once a cool change has arrived. Ensure your pet has access to a cool and well-ventilated shady area (if outdoors) and wherever possible bring pets inside. Provide plenty of clean and fresh water, at least one bowl per pet. You can place ice cubes in the water too! For hours of entertainment, you can freeze their dry food in water or freeze wet food for a cool & crunchy snack.

DO NOT allow your pet to walk on hot surfaces, such as asphalt, sand, or concrete. If you are unsure if the surface is too hot, place the back of your hand on it. If you cannot hold it there for more than 5-10 seconds, it is too hot and may burn your pet’s feet.

SIGNS
Lethargy, confusion, weakness/unsteadiness, panting, nausea/vomiting, salivation, collapse, seizures, pale or red gums, rapid breathing and heart rate, extreme restlessness, distress.

TREATMENT
If you are concerned about heat stress in your pet, take them to the nearest emergency vet.
Melbourne Animal Specialist Hospital (MASH) is less than a 5-minute drive from our clinic, located at 8 Maroondah Highway. The Phone number is 1800 838 787. Other emergency clinics include CARE in Collingwood, VRH in Dandenong, and AEC Mt Waverley. All are open 24/7 and no appointment is needed.

Hi Everyone! Just a quick reminder. We have no FIV vaccine available at the moment as it is out of stock nationwide again.

We will updated you all when find out when the vaccine will be available again. Therefore unfortunately we will not be able to book in FIV vaccine and also for those who have booked in appointments already, we will unfortunately have to cancel until those vaccines are back.
