ECLECTUS PARROTS DIET....DO THIS FOR YOUR BIRDS HEALTH!!

First, be aware that there are websites that market PRODUCTS that have put up information about eclectus parrots and their diets and that information is not necessarily accurate. Second, be aware that not every avian veterinarian understands that appropriate diets for eclectus parrots are not similar to the diets for amazons, cockatoos or macaws!! Third, be aware that eclectus parrot need roughage in their diet. Fourth, remember that man made vitamin A is a problem and is NOT the same as betacarotene, which eclectus do need.
Eclectus parrots in the wild do a lot of tree top foraging rather than foraging on the ground. They feed on flowers, tree leaf buds, many different types of wild figs, and other fruits found in their country of origin. Most of these fruits are consumed in their pre-ripened state. Crop contents of wild eclectus indicate a lot of figs are consumed.

We know eclectus have a long digestive tract, 57 inches, as I requested my vet to measure the digestive tract of a dead eclectus parrot. This means that the food consumed by these parrots has a long time to traverse thru their digestive tract digestive tract and thus more nutrients in their food enter the blood stream and affect their body condition and overall health.

We feed fresh foods in the morning, various produce, sprouts, and some fruit. It is critical to wash fresh foods well because produce is exposed to handling by many humans, perhaps exposed to pesticides, and also exposed to insect and animal pests prior to harvest, during transport, and during presentation at the store. We use a vinegar/water solution to wash all fresh foods, and of course a scrubber to assist in removing dirt from vegetables grown in the ground: carrots, celery, sweet potatoes or any other ground-grown produce. Then rinse well. It is also important to monitor the use of pesticides on produce. We do not feed strawberries as that is one item which is considered to often contain pesticides.

When preparing fresh foods, often labeled chop, the food items are generally cut into pieces about a quarter to a half inch in size, using either a special chopping board which is ONLY used for bird foods and a good knife, or using a special food processor which will cut produce into the desired sizes. If such a processor is used, it must be cleaned well daily to prevent bacteria buildup. Do not use cutting boards that have been used for meat or fish, as that would be a serious health hazard for any parrot.

Fresh produce to provide to Eclectus parrots includes vegetables: celery, bell peppers, sweet potatoes, carrots, brussel sprouts, broccoli, all the yellow vegetables, butternut and hubbard squash, spaghetti squash, acorn squash, beets, fresh or frozen sweet peas, fresh or frozen non-gmo corn, yellow or white, (when buying frozen foods check to make sure no preservatives or salt has been added). There are many interesting vegetables in food markets of various cultures that are great additions to these fresh foods.

Fresh or frozen fruits are also important to add to the fresh foods. We make a point of adding two fruits to each morning food mix. Blueberries, blackberries, cherries, pomegranate seeds, apple chunks, and cranberries are all favorites. We prefer granny smith green apples as they are more tart and remain fresh longer than other apple types. We do not pit cherries or remove apple seeds as we know that these items are not a problem for parrots since they are not able to consume enough apple seeds to create harm. Eclectus parrots do not seem to be able to open a cherry pit but they do enjoy chewing on that pit when consuming the cherry. Since we have a lot of Eclectus, we remove the seedlets from the pomegranates and add to the fresh food bowl. Different fruits are available during different seasons.

Leafy greens are a very critical source of important nutrition for Eclectus parrots. Commercial dandelion and kale are both excellent for Eclectus. Commercial dandelion grows leaves about 5 to 6 inches long and the outer leaves can be routinely harvested as the plant continues to produce leaves from the center. These plants are easy to grow in a small container or pot so that someone owning a few parrots could easily grow enough to provide for the needs of their bird. The leaves can be cut up and placed in the fresh food mixture or a leaf can be placed on top of the food in each bird’s bowl. Take note that the parent Eclectus consume about 5 or 6 leaves a day when feeding tiny chicks!

A separate article will be presented on sprouts and on the evening meal for Eclectus parrots.

Photo shows a bowl of fresh foods for the morning and two bowls showing what is left after the parrots ate their morning foods.
