This is true, especially with Oakley (Ajax x Gypsy 2013 litter).

Oakley made such a positive impact on so many people’s lives and is being mourned far and wide.

Oakley was such a gentle and beautiful soul and we know Phil and Caroline provided him with the most blessed family life. For that, we are forever grateful. He really was an ambassador for the breed.

There’s nothing more rewarding as a breeder than having your pups be a soul dog. A once-in-a-lifetime dog who bonds with your heart and soul like nothing else. That’s why we feel our dogs are so special.

Many may wonder, “How can such a special boy be gone at only 10 and a half?”
With many large breeds, Shepherds are not immune to bloat (Gastric Dilation Volvulus - GDV). They can go downhill very quickly.

Thankfully, in the past few years, vets now offer ‘preventative’ surgery for GDV, usually when young dogs are desexed, which is called a gastropexy.

I don’t often advocate for ‘preventative’ surgery as I’ve seen a lot of vets offer completely unnecessary procedures for large dogs (such as hip replacements for large breeds), especially when there are no signs of any issues at all.

Though, even knowing one of our pups has been taken from bloat, I think that if a gastropexy can save one life - it’s worthwhile. We will now be considering it in future.

(Having a gastropexy doesn’t necessarily mean dogs won’t get bloat, but chances are low and it is said that surgical recovery is much easier than not having it.)

🎉🥳 Happy 11th Birthday to our wonderful matriarch, guard dog of our yard, can-do-no-wrong, super star foundation 💫 Meira (Neigepearl Vital Obsession out of Ajax x Sheena) and her gorgeous littermates!

A great granddaughter of our White Shepherd foundation male, Karo, she makes us proud every single day with her sweet bombproof nature, everlasting puppy antics & always willing to please!

From pushing in when someone else is being groomed, to being the most doting dog mumma & surrogate mumma to 2 newborn puppies (Lyka & Sunny), she’s an absolute legend of a dog & melts the hearts of all who meet her! 🎁

Lenny & Anne sadly had to let Bolt cross over rainbow bridge at nearly 14 years of age.

Beautiful Bolt was from Zack x Sheba litter & had the most adorable nature ever.

We know he will be sorely missed by his family & our thoughts and love are with them at this difficult time.

We love our golden oldies, so when such a beloved dog passes, our hearts are heavy too 💔

🐾 Why Dogs Don’t Live as Long as Humans 🐾

Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten year old Irish wolfhound, named Belker.

The dog’s owners, Ron, his wife Lisa and their little boy Shane were all very attached to Belker and they were hoping for a miracle. I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer.

I told the family there were no miracles left for Belker and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog. Ron and Lisa told me that they thought it would be good for the four year old Shane to observe the procedure.

They felt as though Shane might learn something from the experience.

I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker’s family surrounded him.

Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on.

Within a few moments, Belker slipped away peacefully. The little boy seemed to accept Belker’s transition without any difficulty or confusion.

We sat together for a while after Belker’s death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives.

Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, “I know why.”

Startled, we all turned to him.

What came out of his mouth next stunned me.

I never had heard a more comforting explanation.

He said, “People are born so that they learn how to live a good life – like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?”

The four year old continued, “Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don’t have to stay as long.”

The things you find when you’re renovating - many years ago now. Newspapers under lino, ripped up when renovating the kitchen in my first house, circa early 1940ies. I had this WEIRD feeling that it would be good to find something historical in all the old newspapers under the lino - then WOW, I found this. Have you ever had a “feeling” before and then it materialises before your eyes?

More history & research from my old archives 🐾

Defence Force personnel come in all shapes and sizes, and for these two ex-RAAF dog handlers, that includes their four-legged friends.

With that in mind, reservist Flight Sergeant (Flt Sgt) Steve Withey and retired Air Force member Ian Fletcher decided to help commemorate the contribution of military working dogs by laying a wreath for them on Anzac Day.

The pair attended the Medowie Dawn Service, with plans to don a Purple Poppy to commemorate all the animal victims.

The Purple Poppy can be worn alongside the traditional red one, as a reminder that both humans and animals have been, and continue to be, victims of war.

"They were your mate, your working pal," Flt Sgt Withey said. "No matter what was going on at home or anywhere they were always pleased to see you."

Mr Fletcher and Flt Sgt Withey have said goodbye to their dog handler days, but fond memories of their dogs still remain.

Mr Fletcher recalled when he taught his dog Bear to salute. Flt Sgt Withey remembered his dog Kimba's personality when not on the job.

Both men said their dogs knew when they got to work because of the sound of the car, their smell and their voices.

Sad to say that dear old Kelly who we recently shared this photo of, has passed away 5 days ago. Deepest sympathies to her owner Max who gave this special girl the best life. 🐾💕 I remember when I found Max around 24 years ago in the time when websites were a new thing, and the page she dedicated to her 2 white GSDs, Mitch and Albert. (Yes, I still remember their names!) Rest in peace Kelly 🕊️🌈
