Here’s an extended version that dives into the design process:
Big thanks to @silent_republic for capturing The Perfect Vessel, part of the Makers Series we produced for @theritzcarltonmelbourne last year.
Collaborating with @chefmichaelgreenlaw and the shells he collected on some of his dives was both exciting and challenging. The design process pushed us to think deeply about how nature’s intricate forms could be translated into ceramics. We aimed to create vessels that not only reflected the organic beauty but also functioned seamlessly in a fine dining experience.
Every detail was considered: from the texture and weight of the pieces to how the glaze interacted with the organic shapes inspired by the shells. Balancing aesthetics with usability was key, and it was a rewarding to see these concepts come to life.

🌿 Sgraffito is one of my favorite ceramic techniques for adding depth and detail to my work! By carving through a contrasting layer of slip or underglaze, I reveal the clay beneath, creating intricate patterns and textures. It’s like drawing on clay, but with the added element of depth and texture. Whether it’s simple lines or complex designs, sgraffito brings a unique touch to every piece. ✨ #Sgraffito #Ceramics #ClayArt #Handmade #PotteryLove #StudioLife #MelbourneClay
There’s something truly magical about seeing a piece come to life exactly as I envisioned it. From the first to the final touch, the journey is often full of unexpected challenges and discoveries. But when the work reflects what I imagined—capturing the essence of form, texture, and movement—it’s deeply satisfying. Every curve, every surface detail feels like it was always meant to be, all while doing everything it’s expected to do. It’s these moments that remind me why I’m so passionate about the creative process.
Huge thanks to @hungrywolfgrams for sharing their lunch at @braerestaurant and giving me the opportunity to see our tableware quietly doing its thing.
Melbourne Clay has a designed a 4 week wheel throwing introductory class specifically for parents and teens.
“It gets harder to find activities share with your children when they hit their teens. They are way ‘Too cool for school’. This is a great opportunity for you to spend some creative time with while learning something new yourself.”
All of Melbourne Clay’s classes are designed to cater for beginners with no previous experience, however if you have thrown before they can run you through a refresher, allowing you to progress at a more rapid pace. You will learn to throw simple shapes off the wheel and then how to trim and glaze them. By the end of this course you will have your own hand made vessels (typically cups and/or bowls) to take home. The classes are kept small with places limited to 12 people per class, so you will have lots of one on one tuition. The course fee includes the tool kits, clay, glazes and 1kg of firing. Students are asked to bring a towel, apron and a willing pair of hands to each class, everything else you need is provided.
