A few weeks back we took in a stray kitten, Nibbler, from Cranbourne North.
This week we have been contacted about 2 more from the same spot.
Sadly we found a foster carer but they pulled out at the last minute.

We think these 2 friendly not-desexed kittens are Nibbler's siblings.
They are too friendly to be feral kittens!

A reminder that kittens are always getting dumped by people who didn't desex their pet.
Only way to change this is to desex more cats!
(Female cats can have kittens from 6mo old, three litters a year, and average 5 kittens a litter. Be responsible and desex your pets!)

Interesting read.What are your thoughts?

Interesting read.
What are your thoughts?

Campaspe Shire Council have actually gone from a shelter.....to a Pound......

What does this mean?

It means no adoptions from the shelter. Cats and dogs are impounded, collected by owners or not, given a number of days - and Rescue is asked to take the leftovers. Or they die.

This has been brewing for a while - and the reason the Council decided this? Money.

Rescues who are already full of unwanted animals, struggling financially to stay afloat, are asked to take on more - or death is a certainty.

It is not what I ever envisaged would happen when I started 20 years ago. The total collapse of compassion, progressive understanding but the downright greed is no surprise.

Rescue have only ever formed - because of one thing.

The system, and those implementing it - are failing the animals.

It is the only reason Rescue exists. If the system worked - imagine....no Rescue. Instead it would be a small sector with duty of care, fostering and palliative care.

Now Campaspe Shire have made this move - how many other Councils will see this as an ideal way to cut costs, and do the same. Because we all know they love to cut costs.

Local animal shelters, particularly some rural ones have been nothing short of appalling. Money was rarely spent on animals. It is always hidden away - usually beside the rubbish tip - or far from where anyone can see how they are housed.

RSPCA Vic - the supposed leading body for animal welfare in this country have decided they won't be coughing up money to care for impounded animals across our state either.

They now run four shelters. FOUR. In our entire state. Hardly leading the way. Hardly helping the animals that are their focus. Leaving local laws and councils to clean up the mess instead of using their funding to better the chances of animals and build meaningful relationships in rural areas.

So back we go to the animals. Who is caring for them?

The LDH with multiple Council Contracts to gather up animals and impound them in Cranebourne and North Melbourne - they are hardly an open facility that encourage the public through their doors. Shocking facilities in Nth Melbourne such as A block which were not up to Code 20 years ago - are still not up to Code today.

They have known they would have to move from the premises over a decade ago - but still - nothing is done to help the vulnerable who end up in there.

Puppy farmers are still pumping out puppies. We have 'Recreational" and "micro breeders" who can breed in their back yard - with their pets - and make a few thousand on the pups - without having to register as a business.

Yes, without having to register as a business. All they have to do is 'follow the code of practice' like all pet owners in caring for their dogs. No experience needed for pregnant dogs, whelping or anything. Easy money for them isn't it?

Following up on my third terse email to Ros Spence Head of the Dept of Agriculture who proudly informed me that Victoria has some of the best animal welfare laws going.

And yet here we are.....

Not much has changed in 20 years, other than Rescue growing. Good, bad, indifferent, and shockingly ill equipped Rescues.

To say the Rescuers I have been speaking to are disillusioned and exhausted can't even raise much anger any more. They are worn down and beaten by too many decisions that don't facilitate progress or change the status quo for the animals.

I think you the public need to be aware there will be those in rescue who will walk away - after serving for years with an emptiness in the pit of their stomach saying, "I can't do this anymore."

Or be looking for a way out. Because there is no way forward. The blocking, the legislation, the decisions from a few have left us exhausted from a war on justice, compassion and doing what's right with nothing.

It's as bigger mess as it was when I started, and with news breaking on more that I can't share just yet - it is only going to get worse.

Please Note: When you put in an application for a cat/kitten on our website, we may not reply immediatly. The rescue owner and volunteers all have jobs and families/lives so we do ask for some patience. Especially when we have so many kittens at the moment, the application load can be high and every application has to be read, vetted and sent to the relevant foster carer to read and consider. This can take time. We will get back to people, as soon as we are able 😊
Thank you for understanding.

Imagine having a nap this comfortable 😂

You too could witness this hilarity first hand if you adopt Jayce!
Or if you want a more normal napper, check out his sister Caitlyn curled up at his feet.

These Brunswick west kitties are meet and greet only (adoption day is too far for them, and they're shy with new things).
But check out their profiles for more info on them or to apply!

Meet Matterhorn , the little Swiss Mountain he will be added to our Web in the next few days. Application are taken. Go to our website www.2ndchancecatrescue.com.au and fill in an application.
He is one of 4 bottle feed kittens, super affectionate. I would not recommend for small children as they still use their claws to climb up onto you if not picked up.
They love human contact.
If you work from home they would be your little shadow.
I will post Snowdon, Killy and Tiny Tim today, so check our page for more updates.

Good morning from Gilmore!
This cuddly and playful little man is still up for adoption.
He has endless energy, so needs another playful cat in his home (or you could also adopt one of his friends! He has two sisters and many friends).

His zoomies are absolutely hilarious, and he loves to show them to his human.

Could they be any cuter?! This litter was found at a rural tip and came close to being crushed! Unfortunately no sign of mum and luckily were rescued in time. Our foster carer says they are possibly the friendliest, most affectionate she’s fostered. And she’s fostered a lot. Not yet available but in a few weeks Niamh the short-haired tabby girl (she’s exceptional) and medium haired darker tabby boy Howie will be ready. The others are likely spoken for. They’ll be great in many households as long as they have love and attention, ideally another cat and are used to friendly dogs.

Adding up the Facebook poll and the instagram poll, we are proud to announce:

Meet little Miguel and Lyla!
Our two spider-man kittens

They're doing well in their ringworm quarantine. Miguel takes his meds like a champion, Lyla is too smart and knows they're hidden in the treat.
With only a bit on their faces and legs, we're sure they'll be clear in no time.

Both are little cuddle monsters ❤️

We are running Adoption day every Saturday in April, except April 5th.

You will meet brother and sister - Speedy (tall and standing one) and Fluffy. They came into our care from a countryside after a 3-hour trip. They are 4-month old domestic long hair.

Speedy is getting more confident each day and he loves his play time and treats! Fluffy is still finding her feet in the new environment but is making remarkable progress each day. We believe it would be best for them to have a companion cat, so either they are adopted together or by someone who has already got a cat.

Located in Cranbourne

Kitten (1 vaccination) $350
Kitten (2 vaccination) $400
Adult and adolescent cats over 9 months $250

About 2nd Chance Cat Rescue..

Founded in 2011, 2nd Chance Cat Rescue is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and re-homing of abandoned, stray and surrendered kittens and cats. Our rescue is run entirely by volunteers in the south-eastern suburbs of Melbourne.

2nd Chance Cat Rescue has a pro-life approach, with well over 2000 feral/stray and abandoned kittens successfully socialised and re-homed. We have found that even the most apprehensive or timid animals can become wonderful companions if enough quality time is spent with them and our carers go to great lengths in doing so. All potential owners are screened using a comprehensive questionnaire designed to ensure that the cats and kitten(s) are suited to their new environment and owners before leaving 2nd Chance Cat Rescue. All our cats and kittens available for adoption are listed on https://www.petrescue.com.au/groups/10215/2nd-Chance-Cat-Rescue

Our rescue relies on the support and generosity of all of our followers. Donations can be made via GiveNow https://www.givenow.com.au/2ndchancecatrescue

Purchase your wine online through https://goodwillwine.com.au/charities/2nd-chance-cat-rescue and they donate 50% of the profits back to us!
