Take a guess! How long has it been since the matted dog was in last? I'm curious how close you all will come with your estimates.
Remember:
If you want a long coat, visit every 4-6 weeks
If you want a short coat, visit every 6-8 weeks
If you wish to push to 10 or 12 weeks, ask for our shortest clip!
Nails need trimming every 4-6 weeks to prevent the quick (vein) from growing and causing foot/leg issues
A build up of eye boogers (as I like to call them) can cause the skin below to become inflamed or infected - this needs to be cleaned up regularly to prevent vet bills
Infections are more likely if your dog isn't washed regularly
Matted fur hurts and can cause injury when removed. In very extreme and rare cases, it can cause limb loss
Matted fur makes a wonderful home to fleas, maggots, and can trap grass seeds which can puncture your dog's skin and travel within the body. Once I found chicken wire trapped in a matted coat - ouch!
Matted fur is really itchy! If the dog gets their nail caught in the matting, they may rip the nail off (more common than you think!) and may require a vet visit for treatment
Removing matting at home is dangerous. It is common for groomers to see dogs come in injured from attempts at home grooming on matted dogs. Ask for advice on how to groom at home - I offer this for free! Otherwise get a pro to handle it.
On a side note, how beautiful is the German Shepherd's coat. How it shines!
