The well know

n (now former) Altona Shelter run by Mandy Hall formed this small subgroup of B.A.D.G.A.R wildlife rescue to cover the western suburbs of Melbourne. With a team of local foster carers and rescuers, we communicate directly with each other after being informed of an animal in trouble (usually from an wildlife hotline) and send out the first available and closest person to perform the rescue. This ensures a quick and efficient rescue, and takes the pressure off rescuers who are located further out of town. Animal welfare is our first priority, and all animals will receive the best care, treatment and respect. With the help of a few local vets we ensure that where possible, every injury is stitched, every illness is overcome, every orphan is raised to be a wild animal, and all healthy animals are released in the best suited habitat to spend the rest of their lives. We all have our own lives, yet every minute of every day we can receive a unexpected call from someone who has found an injured or sick wild animal. We choose to give up our time and finances to help these wild animals, purely because we care about our native wildlife. We receive only donations from the public to cover cost of food, equipment, medications, etc which can be very expensive in the long run. It would be fantastic if the public could help us out in what we do by donating, especially for our local shelters. Any amount is appreciated as it really adds up. Tins can be found at Altona Veterinary Clinic and Hobsons Bay Vet. Please feel free to suggest our page to your friends and family, and remember, if you see an animal in distress, please phone one of the hotlines so we can advise you how you can safely help and in the meantime we will be sending someone out to assess. Keep up the support for our rescue groups and native wildlife

Busy Spring has finally arrived. Our winter patients were easy going and now ready for release. Shock to the system with the sudden arrival of all the Possums, nestling birds, seal sightings and this poor Roo. We rarely see kangaroos in Hobsons Bay but sightings have increased in 2023. Sorry it took hours for this guy to get his wings. We tried but he was still strong, feisty and semi mobile so we needed help from a fantastic darter friend who travelled 1 hour and back for him. RIP gorgeous boy. Forever thankful to Szumai.

This young Subantarctic Fur Seal is having a rest on Altona Dog beach at Burns Reserve today. Fingers crossed the barriers installed by Council will alert all the off leash dog owners. This little guy has been spotted in W***y for 2 weeks. The Zoo's Marine Response Unit has been and assessed him earlier this week. Exclusion zones noted in photo below.

Sweet little cygnet doing better this morning after a big day yesterday. Unfortunately we had to remove her from The Quest apartments lake yesterday due to her limping and failing to keep up with her parents and 4 much bigger siblings. After a consult and X-rays at our fantastic Hobsons Bay Vet team she was not happy last night. Thankfully she looks 100% today.

Melbourne's Winter is nearly over but our rescuers and carers have been busy the whole time caring for wildlife in need. Even some clucky lorikeet parents dropped by to help feed a non flying lorikeet fledgling. Spring has sprung in the wildlife world and very soon we will be busy little bees too. If you are thinking of becoming a wildlife carer, transporter or rescuer, now is the time to enrol in a 1 day training course with any wildlife organisation. To help our wildlife friends, is one of the most rewarding volunteer roles you could ever undertake.

Peli decided to check himself into Quest apartments today via the balcony. Luckily he was not injured and we put him back into Jawbone wetlands. A very dominant swan was not happy with the newcomer on his turf.

For the month of May some of our volunteers will be unavailable due to holidays and a much needed operation so we will not be able to attend rescues or be available for caring. Please direct all rescues & care to Wildlife Victoria’s webpage or ph 8400-7300. 24hr vets are located at Kensington & Essendon Fields. Please call them ahead of arrival. Many thanks

Too many reports this week from Williamstown, Newport & Yarraville of possums being trapped in backyards and dumped in parks.
We’ve all heard of these stories in the past but have you heard it’s illegal.
That’s right $7,773 per possum illegal.

Possums are protected by the Wildlife Act 1973 & The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Regulations 2019.
Trapping possums in your backyard and taking them more than 50m away is illegal.

Possums have territories and they will defend them. They will defend your backyard from other possums. Removing the one dominant possum will start a possum turf war. Possum activity WILL increase. There will always be a new possum ready to take over an empty territory.
Homeless Possums dumped in parks will also be at risk from the dominant park possum.

Solution:
-Learn to protect your fruit & vegetables using wildlife friendly netting, tree guards & fencing. Lots of information online.
-Cut back branches near your roof. If possums come down the power line, don’t give them a easy exit off the back porch.
-Ringtail possums will make a drey in dense bushes/trees (Eg Pittosporums). Keep trimmed to 3m or below.
-Don’t plant fruit/vegetables or specialist non-native trees beside a fence.
-Plant native trees & bushes as they tend not to overeat them.
-Pest control specialists will not remove protected possums as it is illegal.

The Victorian Government Department of Environment, Land, Water & Planning (DELWP) website has more information including Brushtail Possum and Ringtail Possum fact sheets.

Report any illegal activity to the DELWP Customer Contact Centre on 136 186.

PS Here is a photo of 2 little orphans in care. Two Australian animals that deserve a chance to live, just like you and me.

So proud of the joint efforts today in the rescue and release of a dolphin in Greenwich Bay Newport. Three of our rescuers confirmed the dolphin was stranded at low tide and kept watch for 2 hours. We then handed over to The Zoo’s Marine Response Unit, Parks Victoria & The Water Police. For the next 3 hours they floated the dolphin and walked him to deeper waters until high tide, with a Zoo Vet constantly monitoring him. We feel very proud that so many groups came together for this enormous rescue. 💕🐬💕
