Today we had the pleasure of seeing the very stylish for his quarterly nail trim!

❗️Important
Most dogs naturally wear down their nails when they walk on concrete. However, some dogs that can’t walk as often or prefer to run around on grass might need regular nail trims, like Mr Figaro. It is important that nails are kept short so that your dogs can walk comfortably and they don’t curl in on themselves and pierce the skin, sometimes causing infections. If you are not comfortable trimming your own dog’s nails, the nurses at Toorak are Vet are always happy to help!

Sweet Polly, one of our long term clients, was seen for her monthly arthritis treatment.

❗️Important:
Just like us, our pets can become arthritic as they age. Signs to look out for are: becoming slower on walks, struggling jumping into the car, difficulty walking up and down stairs and being a bit stiff getting up. Book in a consult to discuss the best treatment plan for your furry friend.

The gorgeous Jimi was in yesterday for his crown 💎’s to be removed, however Jimi seemed determined to keep one of them hidden away from us for as long as possible … Jimi was cryptorchid!

Did you know 🧠 ⁉️
Cryptorchidism refers to when one or both of a male dog te**es doesn’t descend into the sc***um. Usually by the time we desex male puppies from around 6 months of age, both have made their journey down, however sometimes they don’t or can’t quite get there. Thankfully though, we are still able to remove any undescended te**es surgically by going into the abdomen like we did with Jimi or can massage it down if it is in the inguinal canal. It’s usually slightly more complicated of a procedure but done!

Today we got the pleasure of meeting the gorgeous ! Weighing in at nearly 70kg, Niamh is one of our very special large breed patients. She travelled to us today for desexing along with a preventative Gastropexy surgery.

❗️IMPORTANT:
Here at Toorak Road Vet, we recommend preventative Gastropexy surgery to all larger breed dogs.
Gastropexy surgery involves attaching the stomach to the abdominal wall to prevent it from twisting or bloating, a condition known as gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV). GDV is a serious, potentially life threatening condition where the stomach fills with gas and rotates, cutting off blood supply. We perform this surgery usually at the time of desexing.

Mr Boris came in today after an incident at a dog park!
We quickly admitted Boris for surgery after a general check-over, and Dr Di had him stitched up in no time. He went home this afternoon with some pain relief and antibiotics to reduce the risk of infection. Wishing Boris a speedy recovery

❗️IMPORTANT: Dog parks can be a great way to exercise your dog off leash however there are some risks. It is important that you teach your dog a reliable recall so that you can call them away from danger. If your dog is hurt by another dog, you must take them to the vet for a check-up, even if there is not a deep wound, as there is still a chance of infection.

Floki is having a Licking Good Time!

DID YOU KNOW 🧠⁉️
Enrichment is one of the most important needs of your dog. Any toy or activity that uses their brain is considered enrichment! or Kongs are great low-energy enrichment options for young and old dogs, and also after surgery. The licking action helps to calm your dog, helping them to relax in new environments or stressful situations. Try at home with some peanut butter (xylitol free), natural yoghurt, or their favourite wet food!
