Apple & Carrot Chew Sticks for Dogs 🍎🥕🦴🐾
These chewy and nutritious sticks combine the natural sweetness of apples with the crunch of carrots, creating a healthy and satisfying snack for your pup.

Ingredients
Main Ingredients:

1/2 cup finely grated apple (peeled and cored)
1/2 cup finely grated carrot
1 large egg
1/4 cup rolled oats
1/2 cup oat flour (or whole wheat flour)
Optional Add-Ins:

1 teaspoon honey (optional, for natural sweetness)
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon (optional, for added flavor and health benefits)
Instructions
1. Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 300°F (150°C).
Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
2. Mix the Dough

In a mixing bowl, combine the grated apple, grated carrot, and egg. Stir until well mixed.
Gradually add the rolled oats and oat flour, stirring until a thick dough forms.
Add honey or cinnamon if desired, and mix thoroughly.
3. Shape the Chew Sticks

Scoop small portions of the dough and roll into sticks about 4–5 inches long and 1/2 inch thick.
Flatten slightly for easier chewing if desired.
4. Bake the Chew Sticks

Arrange the chew sticks on the prepared baking sheet.
Bake for 25–30 minutes, or until firm and lightly golden.
For a crunchier texture, bake longer or leave the sticks in the oven as it cools.
5. Cool Before Serving

Allow the chew sticks to cool completely before offering them to your dog.
Storage

Refrigerate: Store in an airtight container for up to 1 week.
Freeze: Freeze for up to 2 months; thaw before serving.
Benefits

Apple: Rich in fiber and vitamins A and C (ensure no seeds, as they are toxic to dogs).
Carrots: High in fiber, vitamins, and antioxidants for overall health.

Oats: Gentle on digestion and provide sustained energy.
Egg: Helps bind the ingredients and adds protein.

Pro Tips
Custom Sizes: Adjust the size of the sticks for small or large dogs.
Training Treats: Cut the dough into smaller pieces before baking for bite-sized rewards.

Flavor Boost: Add a pinch of turmeric for anti-inflammatory benefits.
These Apple & Carrot Chew Sticks are a wholesome and delicious way to treat your pup. 🍎🥕🐶 Perfect for snacks, training rewards, or just because they deserve some extra love! ❤️🐾

Is your dog’s back hurting?💥🐶 The top signs every pet parent should know.

Back pain and IVDD (Intervertebral Disc Disease) are some of the most common issues that can affect our canine companions, especially as they age or if they’re a predisposed breed.

Whether it’s a sudden limp, difficulty jumping, or general discomfort, identifying the warning signs early is crucial for helping your dog avoid serious injury and improve their quality of life.

IVDD occurs when spinal discs become damaged or degenerate, causing pain, nerve damage, and even paralysis. While breeds like Dachshunds and Cocker Spaniels are especially vulnerable, back pain can affect dogs of any size. Left untreated, it can lead to chronic pain and reduced mobility, making effective management crucial.

From supportive bedding and non-slip surfaces to rehab, mobility exercises, and harness support, there are many ways to help manage your dog’s back pain at home.🦮 Working closely with a qualified rehab professional and veterinarian will ensure the best approach to managing their condition and improving their quality of life.

On this week’s Inside Scoop podcast, licensed Physiotherapist and Canine Rehab Therapist, Sarah MacKeigan discusses:

💥 How to recognize different types of back pain.
💥 The causes and symptoms of IVDD.
💥 Practical home care for dogs with back pain or IVDD
💥 Comparing surgical versus conservative treatments.

Plus in the group files, download an 18-page PDF with a screening tool, a checklist for home care with IVDD, and recommendations for supplements beneficial for IVDD, DM, and other neurological conditions.

What’s with that TONGUE!

A dog tongue is quite different from a human tongue in several ways, both structurally and functionally. Here are some key differences:

Texture:

A dog’s tongue is covered in tiny, rough projections called papillae that give it a textured surface. This helps dogs grip food and keeps them from swallowing large pieces. In contrast, a human tongue has a smoother surface, which helps in tasting and swallowing.

Temperature Regulation:

Dogs use their tongues to help regulate their body temperature through panting, which allows moisture to evaporate and cool them down. The act of panting increases airflow and helps cool their body.
Humans sweat to regulate temperature, primarily through their skin, not through their tongues.

Grooming:

A dog’s tongue is often used for grooming itself. The rough texture helps remove dirt and loose fur, acting like a natural brush.
Humans do not use their tongues for grooming and rely on tools instead.

Taste Sensitivity:

Dogs have fewer taste buds than humans—approximately 1,700 compared to about 9,000 in humans. This makes their sense of taste less developed, but they have a strong ability to taste certain flavors, especially meat.
Humans are more sensitive to a wider range of tastes, including sweet, salty, sour, and bitter.

Saliva Production:

Dogs produce saliva that contains enzymes to help break down food, but their saliva is thicker than human saliva, which is more watery. This aids in capturing food particles more effectively.
Human saliva is more dilute and plays a key role in digestion as well as oral hygiene.

Color and Shape:

Dog tongues can vary in color depending on the breed; for example, some have spotted or blue tongues, like the Chow Chow.
A human tongue is typically pink and may vary slightly in color due to health conditions but won’t have the same variation in pigmentation.

🥵HOT WEATHER WARNING🥵

It’s been an extremely hot week in Melbourne & other parts of Australia….
The humidity has been extreme causing discomfort for our dogs & 🐶 humans!
Its going to be a warm one tomorrow in Brisbane with prediction of 35 to 36 degrees maximums.
With our dogs 🐕 so close to the ground it’s VITAL to be cautious when to walk then as they can suffer heatstroke!!

Please keep your pets cool. If you heading out add a couple of extra water bowls, ensure shade or indoor access.

Skip any walks until it has cooled right down.

http://www.allpetseducationandtraining.com.au/hot-weather-hints.html

And make yourself aware of heat stress signs and basic first aid.

Symptoms of hyperthermia include:

☀️ Excessive and noisy panting
☀️ Laboured respiration
☀️ Increased respiration and heart rate
☀️ Bright red tongue and pale gums
☀️ Thick sticky drool
☀️ Weakness
☀️ Collapse
☀️ Seizures
☀️ Vomiting and diarrhoea (sometimes with blood).

What to do if your dog shows these signs:

🚑 Bring the dog inside, and away from the heat source (for example car).

🚑 Cool your dog down
- Poor cool water (not ice water) over the dog’s head/body and groin
- Drape wet towels over your dog

🚑 Contact your vet or afterhours emergency vet immediately
BE SAFE

🐾 The Secret to Your Dog’s Longevity Might Be Right Under Their Paws 🌍

Did you know that exposure to soil plays a key role in building a strong, healthy microbiome for your dog? 🌱 Dogs pick up beneficial bacteria from the earth, which supports their gut health, immune function, and overall well-being. A healthy microbiome isn’t just about digestion—it’s directly linked to longevity and disease prevention.

In fact, some of the oldest dogs on record were outdoor dogs, thriving with daily exposure to nature and the soil beneath them. 🌳🐕

So, let your dog get a little dirty—it’s good for them! Want to learn more about how a healthy microbiome can extend your dog’s life?

🌿💚 Peppermint is great for dissolving Phlegm, which means it decreases thickness of secretions like mucous. This is a wonderful addition to the diet for pets suffering from dry eye, sinus or upper respiratory infections, or gall bladder sludge. Peppermint is anti-spasmodic so it can help with irritable bowel syndrome and muscle spasms. Fresh mint can be added to meals or peppermint tea can be used.
