Christmas joy filled the air at our wonderful festive gathering in Carrum Downs & Kilsyth. The social support group came together for a heartwarming celebration, reminiscing about cherished Christmas memories and sharing the holiday spirit.

A special visit from Santa brought added excitement as he delivered gifts to everyone, spreading smiles and happiness throughout the room. The celebration concluded with the joyful singing of Christmas carols, creating a truly magical atmosphere brimming with warmth, laughter, and holiday cheer.

For many elders, engaging with horses rekindles a sense of purpose, reduces feelings of isolation, and provides a joyful connection to nature. At Margriet Manor, the experienced staff ensures sessions are safe, inclusive, and adapted to the abilities of each participant. Horse therapy with elders at Margriet Manor is more than an activity—it's a pathway to renewed vitality and emotional connection.

At Avondrust Lodge, pet therapy took an adventurous twist when the reptile zoo paid a special visit, giving elders a chance to face their fears and engage with these fascinating creatures. The event was a mix of curiosity, courage, and excitement as the elders interacted with snakes, lizards, and other reptiles under the guidance of experienced handlers.

For many, it was a step outside their comfort zones, but the supportive environment turned apprehension into awe. The elders surprised themselves by holding or touching the reptiles, sharing laughs and encouragement along the way. This unique experience not only fostered confidence but also sparked lively conversations, making it an unforgettable day at the lodge.

And just like that, another year comes to a close. It’s a time to reflect on the year that has been and, in the Volunteer Coordination Team, a time to thank our wonderful volunteers across Victoria and Queensland for the work they so selflessly do in all of our volunteer programs.

In both States, volunteer development sessions were held to celebrate and thank our volunteers. 7 events were run in Victoria and Queensland. At each event staff and volunteers met, chatted and shared time together over delicious food. Over a delightful selection of finger foods in Queensland, we listened to Mercedes’ updated presentation on ‘ delivering culturally inclusive care’. This sparked a discussion on the need of creating opportunities for clients to share whether they identify as LGBTI+ elders. Many agreed that older generations often face significant barriers to discussing their LGBTI+ identity, potentially missing out on the culturally inclusive care they deserve. This topic is indeed on the agenda and will need a closer look on how to handle this situation.

These sessions provided a valuable opportunity to gather feedback from all MiCare volunteers.

Across both Queensland and Victoria, we concluded with a volunteer survey, which was also sent via email to all volunteers. We hope to gain important insight about the positives and negatives of volunteering with MiCare and identify areas for improvement.

To all of our volunteers, those who attended the sessions and those who couldn’t be there, the Volunteer Coordination Teams extends to you all our sincere thanks. We literally couldn’t do it without you! You contribute so much to MiCare and the amazing services it provides.

At Avondrust Lodge, our elders enthusiastically participate in art and craft classes designed to spark creativity and provide a sense of accomplishment. From painting and drawing to creating handmade decorations, these sessions offer an opportunity for residents to explore their artistic talents while enjoying a relaxed and social atmosphere.

The classes not only promote mental stimulation and fine motor skills but also bring joy and a sense of community among the participants.

Finishing Touches: My Artistic Golden Brooch is a project partially funded by the Redland Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF), MiCare Ltd., and some financial support from Business Suppliers SSS Australia, PFD Food Services PTY Ltd., and Plena Health. This project engaged a group of 16 Elders from different cultural backgrounds residing at MiCare Prins Willem Alexander Lodge in Birkdale, Brisbane. Each Elder worked individually with a designated volunteer at the Elders’ pace. The 17 meaningful painting reflects a rich life experience and history they would like to share with the greater Redland’s community. Elders were immersed in a creative and meaningful art experience, in a supportive and harmonious environment, where they comfortably communicated and displayed their creativity, regardless of their abilities, cognitive stages, and cultural and linguistic heritage.
