I get asked a lot about Enrichment!

What is it?
Enrichment is giving your dog activities that can stimulate them mentally and/or physically, and essentially, just enrich their day!

What sort of dogs benefit from enrichment?
All of them! But more so your active and high energy dogs.

My top enrichment tip?
DITCH THE FOOD BOWL!!
Most people feed their dogs from a bowl and it’s gone in 2 seconds! Why not use their meal to your advantage?

Here are 5 ways you can give your dog enrichment, using their every day meal:

1) Toss their food in/around the backyard so they have to use their nose to find it!
2) Hide their food around the house so they have to use their nose to find it!
Start off simple so they get the idea and then make it harder for them once they’ve got the hang of it!
3) Feed them from treat toys!
There are so many different treat dispensing toys on the market these days, of varying price ranges! There’s also quite a few DIY treat toy ideas on the internet using common house hold items (e.g. muffin tin game & rolled up towels).
4) Feed them a bone or dehydrated item in replacement of their usual meal!
It’s common to give these items after or addition to a meal - your dog is not likely to be as interested if it’s given for dessert rather than their main!
5) Use their meal for training rewards throughout the day or night!
If your dog does something good e.g. is quiet and not barking, is settled on their mat/bed, keeps 4 feet on the floor and doesn’t jump up on you, toss or give them a bit of their meal as a reward until they’ve eaten all of their normal meal portion.

All of these super simple ideas can be great to help tire your dog out, to burn off excess energy, or just provide something a bit different in their day to day life 😊

Going away on the long weekend? Don’t forget your dogs 🐶 ❤️

With the Australia Day long weekend only a few weeks away, now is the time to book in a dog walker or sitter for your pet if you are planning on going away.

Boarding kennels, pet sitters and dog walkers book out very quickly during these times, so I would recommend trying to secure something now rather than closer to the time.

I am currently taking bookings for dog walks, home and pop in visits and still have some availabilities left.

If you are needing someone to take care of your bird, cat, rabbit, guinea pig or dog, please don't hesitate to get in touch ☺

Hi Everyone
I keep forgetting to tell people so I thought I’d post it here.

Due to the increased cost of operating I have to implement a small price increase of $5 per groom for small dogs and a $10 increase for larger dogs. This is for full clips only from January.

This will allow me to continue to provide the quality service that I offer and guarantee only the best products and equipment are used.

Thank you for your understanding.

Hi Everyone

I have some good news!
Salons are now able to open for welfare grooms.
Due to being still in lockdown, we need to be as Covid safe as we can. Kind of click and collect 😁.
You will see a play pen at the salon door with sanitiser attached. Please use the sanitiser and open the gate and put your dog in the pen.
I will then open the gate on my side and get your dog.

It’s good to back and I look forward to seeing you and of course the little hairy ones 🐕🐕

Sorry I’m unable to take on new clients.

Love Kellie and Bijou ❤️

Hi Everyone
I do hope your all doing well in all this craziness.

There been an update regarding dog grooming. Unfortunately it is mobile only not salons or home salons.
This has been updated on the DHHS website.
This is for welfare grooming.
So Vets, Pet shops and mobile groomers can offer welfare grooms.

I apologise for the huge inconvenience that this causes my clients. As soon as DHHS let salons go back I will be working my butt of to accommodate.

Thanks and stay safe
Kellie and Bijou ❤️

Hi Everyone
I hope you’re all doing well in this lockdown. 💕

Unfortunately I’m still not allowed to work but if your dog can not wait and you need a groomer, pet shops with a groomer working at the premises are now allowed to work.

I do hope to see you all soon.
Take care and stay safe

Hey Everyone
I hope lockdown is treating you well and you’ve had the opportunity to spend some quality time with your dogs. 💕

I thought I’d share a video about garlic from two of the most amazing and interesting people, Dr Karen Becker and Rodney Habib.

I was lucky to have spent the day at a dog wellness seminar (masterchops) years ago where they spoke. These guys are all about natural and holistic health for dogs and have been for many many years.

They have just written a book (which I can’t wait to get my hands on) and they do a shameless plug at the end but this video is well worth the watch and if you’re interested in a natural and holistic approach to
looking after your dog you may want to look them up further.

I hope you enjoy
Love Kellie 💕 and Bijou 🐩

A little FYI lockdown (good) advice 💕💕

🛇 Use your Manners! 🛇
The Sniff test - Stop doing that!
The sniff test - a badly engrained habit that society has been taught, without a clear understanding of what they're actually doing.

🚩When you reach out towards a dog, you are using body pressure AT them, giving them no time to assess whether you are safe & whether they require further investigation to pick up your information. You are forcing an interaction of a relationship that hasn't had time to develop. To some dogs, this is quite rude & the reason a lot of dogs snap at or bite people. This can cause alot of behavioral issues because of layered stress due to forced interactions.

🚩If they are on lead, they have no where to go if they are sensitive to spacial pressure, so can end up shutting down, shying away or snapping at your hand so you back off. This is an example of how a dog is now using pressure to turn off pressure & make you back off so they aren't so stressed.

🚩People think by offering your hand it can give the dog time to sniff to know you're friendly... they can sniff without being forced to sniff your hand.Their noses are far more superior than ours & they don't need close contact forced upon them to smell you.

🚩Some dogs might not want to know you. You have no relationship with them and that's perfectly fine. They aren't your dog so you don't need to touch them or steal pats for your own satisfaction.

🤔 If you are meeting a dog, what should you do?
⚠Ask the owner if you can interact with their dog. Not all people want strangers touching their dogs. Especially strangers who you are unlikely to see again.
⚠Stand up straight & relaxed, with your hands at your side.
⚠Ignore the dog & talk to the owner.
⚠Don't stare at the dog & don't try to force an interaction by going in for a pat. If the dog wants to know you, it will come up to you & sniff around. Usually they will move away & then come back for a second sniffathon. Some dogs will bunt your hands & wag their tails, which are good signs that you're likely an accepted new friend. Give them a few slow pats down their back (NOT THEIR HEAD) & then stop. Is the dog happy? Has it accepted your interaction? This will determine whether you can give it more pats.

🐶This is a more stress free option for dogs & a reason why in consultations we can develop a good level of trust, especially with fearful dogs & aggressive dogs, without a bunch of negative side effects from forced interactions.
