This gorgeous little bean is 𝗖𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗲𝘁. She is a bit of a 𝘝𝘐𝘗 here at Vetcall. Captain was quite unwell for a while and requires regular bloodwork to monitor her liver, we have all grown very fond of this brave little girl with the most awesome name! 💛

With the silly season fast approaching and many pets being cared for by friends, neighbours or pet sitters and also the dreaded fireworks to come, it is 𝗡𝗢𝗪 you want to ensure your pet is able to be returned to you safely and as quickly as possible.
If you cannot be contacted because you have an old number listed, your pet could find itself at the local pound or worse.. if it has been injured.
We can only hand pets over to the person listed as the owner on the microchip database. If your ex or your pets breeder is still listed as the main contact, this can complicate and delay the pets return.

To check your pet’s microchip, you can use the Pet Address search engine at 𝘄𝘄𝘄.𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗱𝗱𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀.𝗰𝗼𝗺.𝗮𝘂 this site searches multiple registers at once.
You can also check your pet’s microchip details by logging into the registry website where your pet’s microchip is registered.

𝗚𝘂𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗮 𝗣𝗶𝗴 𝗗𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲 🐹

With a proper diet and the correct chewing options, guinea pig teeth should rarely need trimming.

If you notice that your guinea pig’s teeth are starting to grow too long or their eating habits have changed, it may mean a visit to a vet for investigating.
A number of factors can lead to why we would need to trim Guinea pig’s teeth. Incorrect diet is probably the most common cause and genetic disorders such as malocclusion (misalignment) of the teeth.

This little guy was in recently for trimming of his incisors (front teeth) and filing of sharp spurs on his molars (back teeth). A sedation is required for this procedure and the patient is usually required to stay the day with us.

Unfortunately, once Guinea pig teeth have over-grown the damage has already been done, and they usually require regular trimming for maintenance.
We will discuss your pigs diet with you and where necessary suggest changes to help slow down the teeth growth and improve their overall diet and chewing habits.

The best thing to do is to try and prevent this condition. Make sure your guinea pig’s diet contains as much hay or grass as they want and as well as adequate vitamin C through eating leafy greens.
Annual routine health checks will help to monitor for any signs of early dental disease.
