Urgently needing to downsize before summer comes.
Have 3 young thoroughbreds coming up for sale earlier than I hoped for.

Harry - 3yo approx 14.3hh-15hh
Lightly handled, has had a roller on and saddle thrown on havent cinched it up.
Very confident and willing to please. First time he saw a jump and popped over it no worries both cross rails and straight. Can brush all over, still a bit cautious with feet. Very very sweet boy.
Just finished a 5 day panacur worming treatment too and will hopefully squeeze him in for another hoof trim before he goes.
Blank canvas ready to progress further, will excel in a jumping or eventing career, very confident.
We currently don’t have a suitable float for horses so we haven’t tried to float him, we did however have him walking on and off the ramp.

Harry is NOT a fan of dogs, if you dream of riding out with your canine companion by your side this is not the horse for you.

Asking $700 just to cover the cost of gelding and hay/feed/worming for him.

Amy took Earl for a spin today, he made sure to look after her.
He’s my good little pony!
Although we did have a bit of a spook and a run earlier when I was riding him outside, the magpies are swooping early and he wasn’t quite a fan of it.

The colts have been healing from gelding the past two weeks and will start to come out and get worked again now.
In the meantime I thought I’d long rein my boy Earl to get him more soft in the mouth and develop some more straightness in his lines whilst I wait for a crupper attachment for our saddle.
Beautiful winters day yesterday for it, a little concerned for summer this year with lack of rainfall!

Little Harry has come a long way in a little under a week.
We can now touch everywhere without kicking or fear and even got a saddle blanket on today.
Dea has been doing some great work with John too! Both the boys have come good in the short time they’ve been here.

It’s been a hot minute since I’ve posted anything on here!
Times got tough due to covid and I went back to part time work. However I got a message a couple of days ago to help out with some float training, so I thought why not and headed over to Doreen to help out this lovely lady and her horse.
He was quite stubborn with loading and inconsistent, he would get on about halfway before he decided he’d rather plant his feet and stay there.
By the end of it we had him getting on consistently with no hesitation and happily standing in there!

Earl had his first proper trots under saddle on Wednesday! Second proper ride on the boy and very impressed. He felt a little tense at the start but eased up well into it.

Whiskey had his first trail two weeks ago and he was such a super star!!
Photo from his second trail last week, which was absolutely miserable! Lots of rain and wind.
We missed out on our trail this week unfortunately, but keen to get him out again. The hills are absolutely fantastic for building the correct muscle to get Standardbreds more comfortable in the canter.

A familiar face is back!
Whiskey who I broke in back in 2019 and sold. His owner bought a house and was unable to have horses anymore, so I brought him back and leased him out, now his back again after his lease where my friends and I will be using him as a spare trail horse.
He’s also had his first outing to P.C on Sunday just gone.
This is the boy who started my business 💖

Charlotte still looking for her new home!
Due to saddle fit issues, she’s not being ridden regularly as I’d like to avoid pain and discomfort with her.

Bridling work with Earl today, such a quick learner!
Waiting to purchase a new fitted saddle for him and start our ridden journey 💖

‼️For Sale‼️on behalf of a friend.
12hh Australian Pony
Previously been used in a school holiday program, Kids have ridden in the square yard and on property trail off lead.
Forward moving, would be a perfect little games pony or pc for a kid who can ride. Has been used as a lead pony.
Stays fat on air.
Can be a bit tricky to catch but has been easily caught with feed.

Currently a year out of work and a bit forward on the ground, however have chucked the saddle on and jumped on with no nasties. Only thing she does is stop when she wants or turns her own way. Nothing an experienced rider can’t correct.

‼️GONE‼️
Nani
Rising 8yo 14.3hh Standardbred Mare.
Trialled trotter, never raced - has a beautiful canter.
One of the best horses I’ve had the pleasure of owning for over 5 years, she’s brought so much joy to my life but unfortunately circumstances change and she needs a home that can put more time and work into her than I can currently offer.
She’s had everything from beginner riders through to advanced on her, never put a foot wrong - however she is a particularly spooky horse, especially when out of work.
She has been out of full work since late 2020 but has always been a pleasure to pull out and jump on for a ride.
Nani will need to be brought back into work and needs more experience with outings.
Leads, ties up and floats well, only ever been barefoot. She does have a bowed tendon.
Would make a flashy mare in the show ring, or even produce lovely foals.

More photos and videos of Nani on the page.

Regretful sale, will only go to the best of homes.

Biscuit
Welsh Pony

Bought as a project but unfortunately last minute going away and won’t have the time to see to him.
Very curious little guy, wants to please but just a bit shy, especially with new people. Will approach you and can be caught if you take it easy, he’s been meeting me at the gate every day. Very food motivated too!
Was dropped off in a float, he loads but just takes his time.

Got the all clear to bring the fat pony back into work!
6months off and jumped on and hoped for the best out on the trails.
Pretty spooky and fresh which is definitely unlike her, but can’t blame her after 6months off and nothing but the sugary spring grass.

The mares first ride back.
Still available for free lease, she does have a couple viewings though.
Will need to go to someone confident and experienced as she did have a couple of little humps in her. Nothing bad to unseat you, but they were there. And a few pig squeals too

Whiskey
Last ridden in March. 3 hour trip in the truck yesterday, had a night to settle in and hopped right on for a ride today. Not a foot put wrong.
Very unbalanced and needs to build up that muscle again to carry rider, it overall a very good boy.
Also the laziest horse I’ve had in a bit, definitely have to kick him up a bit!

Picked up two standardbreds today - one familiar face from a few years ago, Whiskey!
And a new girl.
Both to be brought back into work. Whiskey is available for free lease and the black mare will be available to the very best of homes, although she does have a lot of interest 😉

Both previously been used as a beginners horse.

A lot of riders battle confidence problems every time they mount. They fear the worst. Yet, they gird their loins while holding their breath, mount their horse, and hope it will be a safe, fun ride. There is a huge release of tension and a feeling of satisfaction when the dismount is voluntary.

From the start, let me say that nobody should feel bad or apologize for having fear issues. They are real and not to be trivialized. And an appropriate level of fear is even desirable because it will help a rider make smart decisions and give more consideration to how a horse is feeling. A little bit of fear makes a person a better horse person.

But some people’s level of fear becomes debilitating and gets in the way of their horsemanship. I do not judge people who carry a lot of worry. However, personally I would not ride a horse that scared the hell out of me. I am not an adrenalin ju**ie.

Overcoming a confidence problem is not easy and can be a long, slow process. I’m not an expert or a sports psychologist to be giving advice. So consider these thoughts with some skepticism.

I’ve worked with people and horses a long time. One thing I have noticed is that surviving a ride is not enough to overcome fearfulness. It’s not enough to get on a horse, survive the ride and then expect to feel braver and more confident the next time. You actually have to feel good and positive about the ride. You have to have achieved emotional comfort from the ride in order for the next ride to be less stressful.

In my experience, confidence comes from achievement. Ride with a plan and feel good by achieving a result closer to what you intended.

For example, if you are afraid of riding on a trail perhaps begin by riding through the arena gate. Then stop and turn back to the arena before your confidence starts to fall apart. It doesn’t matter if the ride is 5km or 5m. Repeat this over days, weeks, or months until riding out the gate does not feel like a challenge. Then extend the ride a little further before heading back to the arena. Each ride should feel like a success and not just something you survived.

If you are afraid of jumping, you could start by learning to balance in the jumping position while walking your horse around the arena. When that feels comfortable build towards a trot and later a canter. Progress from this to doing it over a ground pole. Eventually, repeat the exercise to a pole 50mm off the ground. And so on. Don’t proceed to the next stage until you are comfortable. Before you know it, you are jumping a 120cm oxer and triple bars and water jumps.

Does this strategy sound a little familiar?

When I ride a horse that lacks confidence on the trail I might ride through the arena gate. Then stop and turn back before my horse’s confidence starts to fall apart. It doesn’t matter if the ride is 5km or 5m. I would repeat this over days, weeks, or months until riding out the gate does not feel like a challenge to my horse. Then I would extend the ride a little further before heading back to the arena. Each ride should feel like a success to my horse and not just something it survived.

Building a horse’s confidence should come in increments and each ride should end with the horse feeling emotionally comfortable rather than feeling “thank goodness it’s over and I survived.”

Yesterday I was giving a video lesson to a rider in the US. In the background was a trainer using a flag to make a horse do what the trainer wanted. The horse was resistant because it carried fear and lacked confidence at being circled. The trainer chose to ignore the horse’s genuine concerns. Instead, he decided he would make it more afraid of not lunging than it was of lunging. We tried to ignore it and focus on the lesson, but we found it very disturbing.

It’s perplexing that some people expect more of their horse than they are prepared to offer themselves. When a rider has fears most trainers can think through a strategy that will help improve a rider’s confidence. They will break the lesson into small steps and build confidence at each step along the way. But when a horse reacts to its fears and resists a trainer’s ideas some people forget the same compassion they would want to be offered to them if the situation was reversed.

I wonder if horses were the paying customers and riders were sent for training if things would be different.

My red standardbred Nani coming back into work!
Which means going right back to basics and fixing holes in her training. She was broken to saddle back in 2018 before she was turned out due to degloving her leg and then constant injury after that.
In that 3 years I’ve had the pleasure of growing my knowledge and even working under a professional breaker who’s helped me learn and develop new skills, which means I can fix everything I missed and teach Nani new things too.
Today was back to side reins to teach her to give to pressure, as under saddle she rips her down and pulls the reins right out of your hands. Side reins will teach her to give and accept pressure, rather than avoiding it.

Bit of a wet one the other day, but Duke happily obliged! What good boy.
