🌞 As temperatures rise, senior pets need extra attention. Here are some key tips to keep them safe and comfortable:

▪ Keep Them Hydrated: Always provide fresh, cool water. Try adding ice cubes or giving them pet-safe frozen treats.
▪ Time Outdoor Fun Wisely: Avoid peak heat hours. Early mornings and evenings are perfect for walks.
▪ Create a Cool Haven: Ensure your pet has a shaded spot or access to air conditioning when you're not home.
▪ Protect Their Paws: Test pavement with your hand—if it's too hot for you, it's too hot for them.
▪ Watch Their Health: Be alert for signs of overheating like heavy panting, drooling, or sluggishness.
▪ Never Leave Pets in the Car: A few minutes in a parked car can be dangerous and potentially fatal.

As the temperature rises, grooming becomes even more important for your dog’s comfort and health. Regular grooming helps keep your dog’s coat clean, cool, and free from pests like ticks and fleas. Here are a few tips to help your pup stay fresh all summer long:

1️⃣ Brush Regularly – Brushing your dog’s coat removes loose fur, dirt, and tangles. It also helps prevent matting, which can trap heat and irritate the skin.
2️⃣ Trim Excess Fur – Consider a light trim to keep your dog cooler, especially for long-haired breeds. But be careful not to shave down to the skin—your dog's fur also provides some protection from the sun.
3️⃣ Check for Pests – Summer is prime time for fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes. After outdoor play, check your dog for any pests and consider using preventive treatments.
4️⃣ Bathtime – Keep your dog clean by giving them a bath with a gentle, pet-safe shampoo. Be sure to dry them thoroughly to avoid any dampness, which can lead to skin issues.
5️⃣ Hydrate & Protect – Summer grooming isn’t just about the fur—don’t forget to keep your dog hydrated and ensure they have access to shade and cool areas to rest.

A fresh, well-groomed pup is a happy, comfortable pup!

With the temperature rising, heatstroke in dogs is a serious risk and can be life-threatening. Dogs are especially vulnerable to heatstroke, which can cause multi-organ failure and has a high mortality rate if not treated quickly.

Signs of heatstroke in dogs include excessive panting, rapid breathing and heart rate, pale or red gums, drooling, vomiting, diarrhoea, confusion, dizziness, muscle tremors, and collapse. If you notice any of these symptoms, it’s crucial to act fast.

To reduce the risk, keep your dog hydrated, avoid hot surfaces like sand or concrete, and exercise during the cooler parts of the day. Always provide access to shade and a cool, ventilated area. Never leave your dog in a vehicle, even with the windows down, as the temperature can rise dangerously fast.

If you suspect your dog is suffering from heatstroke, start emergency first aid. Try to cool your dog down by applying room-temperature or cool water to their fur/skin. To maximise heat loss, keep the environment cool (e.g. fan, air-conditioning).

Contact us immediately on (03) 9596 4804 if you suspect heatstroke and need assistance.

Did you know stress can lead to constipation in cats?

Just like humans, cats can develop digestive issues when they're stressed, and constipation is a common sign.

🧠 How Stress Triggers Constipation:

Changes in routine, new environments, or even subtle shifts at home can stress your cat. This stress affects their gastrointestinal system, causing slower bowel movements.

👉 Signs of Constipation in Cats to watch for:

▪️Straining or spending extra time in the litter box with little to no result.
▪️Dry, hard stools or no bowel movement for 48+ hours.
▪️Loss of appetite or lethargy.
▪️Discomfort or a bloated belly.
▪️Avoiding the litter box or showing signs of distress when using it.

⚠️ Why Prompt Treatment is Important:

If left untreated, constipation can lead to more serious issues like megacolon or intestinal blockages, which may require surgery. Catching it early is key to preventing further complications.
