Wilson’s not just enjoying a tasty snack, he’s taking care of his teeth too! 🦷🐾

Dental health is a big part of keeping our pets happy and healthy. Regular dental care helps prevent plaque buildup, freshens breath, and supports overall wellbeing. Treats like these from Bell & Bone make it easy and enjoyable for cats to get a little extra dental care in their routine. 😺💕

Wilson’s excitement says it all, dental care doesn’t have to be a chore when it’s this delicious! 🐈🦷

🌟 Meet Nala, The 12-Week Superstar! 🐾

This gorgeous girl stole the show last week when she came to visit Dr Ally for her 12-week vaccination. Just look at those puppy-dog eyes, how could anyone resist?! 😍

Nala was such a champ, soaking up all the attention (and cuddles, of course) while Dr Ally gave her a thorough check-up. She’s growing beautifully, full of personality, and already mastering the fine art of making humans do whatever she wants with one look. Honestly, we think she might have a secret superpower. 🦸‍♀️🐕

We can’t wait to see Nala again for her next visit, something tells us she’ll be even bigger, bolder, and still melting hearts wherever she goes. 💕

🌾 Pepper’s Sneaky Grass Seed Surprise!👀🐾

Meet Pepper, a sweet and smiley Labrador who came to us with a sore, red eye. After a closer look, we discovered the culprit, a sneaky grass seed hiding under her third eyelid! Poor Pepper was so uncomfortable, but after a quick sedation, we removed it, and she’s back to her happy, wagging self. 🐶💜

What’s the Third Eyelid?

Dogs have a third eyelid, a special protective layer in the inner corner of their eye. It acts like a shield, protecting their eyes from dirt and debris while keeping them moist. But sometimes, it can trap unwanted guests like grass seeds!

Pepper’s case is a perfect example of how these tiny seeds can cause big trouble, just like other grass seed cases we’ve seen recently. It’s always worth keeping an eye out for signs of discomfort in your pets, as these sneaky seeds often hide in the most unexpected places. 👀😱

🌟 Say hi to Jett! 🌟

This handsome 6-year-old Labrador has had a bit of a rough time lately. Jett was dealing with a sore back caused by spinal stenosis (that’s a fancy term for joint space narrowing in his lower spine). It was slowing him down, and even gentle touches were making him uncomfortable. Poor Jett! 😔

When his owners brought him to us, they just wanted their happy, active boy back. After some careful assessments and radiographs, we decided to try an epidural to help ease his pain and get him moving again.

And guess what? It worked wonders! 🎉

Jett was a little sore for the first few days after his procedure, but now? Jett’s owners say he’s a whole new dog. He’s back to running around the yard, swimming happily in the pool, and even enjoying lead walks again. 🦮🏃‍♂️

Stories like Jett’s are why we love what we do. Treatments like epidurals can be a game-changer for pets with spinal issues or chronic pain. If your furry friend is slowing down or showing signs of discomfort, let’s chat. We’re here to help them feel their best and get back to living their best life. ❤️🐕

🐔 Exciting News from Dr. Kelly’s Backyard! 🌱🥚

Our family has welcomed five new feathered friends into the backyard, and they’ve already made themselves at home! 🐓 Watching these lovely ladies scratch around for bugs 🪲, recycle our veggie scraps 🥕, and provide fresh fertilizer for our garden 🌿 has been so rewarding and let’s not forget the fresh eggs! 🥚

🥚 Did You Know?

You can incorporate eggshells into your dog's food as a natural source of calcium when feeding a home-prepared, meat-based diet!

🐾 The average 20kg adult dog needs about ~1000mg of calcium per day.
Eggshell powder contains 40% calcium (or 400mg per gram). So just 2.5g of eggshell powder will meet the daily calcium needs for a 20kg adult dog, assuming no other calcium sources like bones or dairy are in the diet.

⚠️ Reminder: This advice applies to adult dogs only. Puppies and breeding bi***es have different calcium needs, you can always talk to us before making changes to their diet.

Here’s to happy chooks, healthy gardens, and nutritious meals for everyone in the family, pets included! 💛✨

It’s late Spring, and we’re seeing an increase in ear infections in dogs, something we see every year around this time! 🐶🌼

Why So Many Ear Infections Now? 🤔

Spring brings:
🌾 Grass seeds: These sneaky little troublemakers can get deep into ear canals, causing irritation and infection.
🌸 Pollen allergies: Dogs with allergies may feel extra itchy, and the inflammation can lead to ear infections.

What to Watch For 👀:

Shaking their head or flapping their ears.
Tilting one ear lower than the other.
Just seeming quieter or not themselves, especially if both ears are affected. 😔

What We’ll Do for Your Pup 🩺🐕:
If your dog’s ears are causing trouble, here’s how we can help:
✔️ Check for grass seeds, ear mites, or inflammation. 🌿
✔️ Take a sample to find out if it’s yeast, bacteria, or something else. 🧪
✔️ Clean out any muck to make sure treatments reach the problem. 🛁

Preventing Future Ear Woes 🛡️:
🍖 A tailored nutrition plan can reduce inflammation & help manage seasonal allergies.
💧 For recurrent infections, regular anti-inflammatory ear drops can help

🐶 Don’t ignore the signs: Ear infections can be painful and won’t go away on their own. If you’re worried about your dog’s ears, give us a call or pop in to see us. We’re here to help! 💙✨

🌾 The Hidden Danger: Puck’s Grass Seed Ordeal! 🐾

Meet Puck, a beautiful Labradoodle with a big smile and an even bigger story to tell! 🐶 She came to us with a swollen ear (an aural haematoma) and a mild ear infection. But when we checked her ear under sedation, we found the culprit, a huge grass seed lodged deep in her ear canal! 😲

But that wasn’t the end of it. Our amazing nurses gave Puck a full check-over and discovered 30 more grass seeds hiding between her paw pads! These tiny, arrow-shaped seeds had worked their way into her fur and were causing her a lot of discomfort.

What makes grass seeds so dangerous?

Grass seeds may look small and harmless, but they’re sneaky little troublemakers. They can stick to your pet’s fur, burrow into their skin, and even travel deeper into their body, causing pain, infections, and sometimes requiring sedation to remove. Just like Puck!

Thanks to her thorough check-up, Puck is now seed-free and back to her happy, playful self! 🎉

🐶 Heads up: If your pet is shaking their head, licking their paws, or acting uncomfortable, a grass seed could be the culprit. Don’t wait—get them checked out to avoid bigger problems.

🐾 Jess’s Annual Health Check-Up 🩺

Today we had the pleasure of seeing Jess, who came in for a check-up. She had a lump examined (great news—it’s benign!), as well as her annual Heartworm test and a titre test to check her immunity levels.

The results? Jess is Heartworm negative, which is awesome! And her titre test came back positive, showing she still has strong immunity even though her last vaccine was given back in 2017. 💉✨

Titre testing is a great way to ensure your pet’s immune system is still protected without over-vaccinating. Jess is a shining example of how proactive care and regular check-ups keep our furry friends in their best health!

Thanks for being such a star patient, Jess! 💕🐶

Please Pick Up Your Fish Hooks 🎣

Last week, this poor young seagull was brought to us in terrible distress after being found with a fish hook lodged in its mouth. The hook had been stuck for some time, causing pain and making it difficult for him to eat. It’s hard to imagine the suffering he endured before help arrived. 😔

Dr. Kelly quickly anaesthetized the bird to carefully remove the hook and administered antibiotics and pain relief to help him recover. He’s now with a carer who will ensure he gets his medications, starts eating again, and regains his strength before being released back to his home by the water. 🌊

This incident highlights the silent dangers fishing hooks and lines pose to wildlife. While fishing is a much-loved pastime, forgotten or discarded gear can have devastating consequences for animals like this young seagull.

By taking small steps—like double-checking fishing spots for stray hooks or properly disposing of used gear—we can all help protect the incredible wildlife that shares our beautiful beaches.

🌽 Why Corn Cobs and Dogs Don’t Mix 🐾

Last week, Stevie’s family noticed she wasn’t her usual self - lethargic and vomiting after eating a corn cob the night before. They trusted their instincts and brought her in, and it’s a good thing they did!

The corn cob had caused a bowel obstruction, and Stevie needed an emergency exploratory laparotomy to remove it. Thankfully, everything went smoothly, and she’s now on the road to recovery! 🎉🐶

🌽 Corn cobs might seem harmless, but they’re a hidden hazard for dogs. Unlike other foods, corn cobs don’t digest when they are eaten. The rigid structure of the cob makes it impossible for a dog’s digestive system to break down. They often lead to emergency situations, just like Stevie's, that require surgical intervention.

So please be careful with corn cobs and your precious dogs. And if you ever notice your dog behaving unusually - like being lethargic, vomiting, or showing signs of discomfort - don’t wait to see if they improve. Trust your instincts and seek veterinary care immediately. Acting quickly, just like Stevie’s family did, could make all the difference.

Wishing Stevie lots of belly rubs and a speedy recovery! 💕

🌿 Love Our Native Wildlife? 💚

We all adore our beautiful magpies and often want to lend a hand, especially when they’re young and curious. But did you know that feeding mince, crackers and bread can actually harm them? 😟

This little fledgling magpie came in with a deformity in its feet caused by a lack of proper nutrition while growing up. Sadly, feeding the wrong foods - no matter how well-intentioned - can lead to weakened bones, making it difficult for birds to perch and forcing them to live on the ground where they’re in danger from dogs, cats, and traffic. 🚗🐕

The good news? This youngster was lucky enough to still have a strong grip! 🫶 But many others aren’t as fortunate.

🌿 What’s the best way to help?

Let birds forage naturally! Magpies are expert hunters of insects, worms, and grubs - all packed with the nutrients they need for strong, healthy bones. 🪱🐛

Let’s support our feathered friends by keeping their diets natural and their habitats safe. Together, we can enjoy watching them thrive in the wild And in return, we get to wake up to the sweet sound of their morning warble! 🖤🤍🌳

Peaceful goodbyes are part of the journey that we, as veterinary teams, assist with almost every day. We have the skills and training to ensure that this final farewell is as gentle and celebratory as possible. We take pride in being able to help pet owners say goodbye with dignity and peace. It’s a part of what we do.

Yet, sometimes these moments affect us deeply too. This week, the Bentons Road Vet team had to say goodbye to some truly special souls, and we are grieving alongside their families.

When an unexpected goodbye happens, it can be devastating not only for the owners but also for our entire team. We are hurting this week. For those of you that have lost this week, our hearts go out to you. We’re thinking of you with love and compassion.
