🦴 Meet Indiana Bones - The most fearless (and fluffiest) explorer to ever set paw in our clinic! 🏺🐾

This little adventurer came in for his Annual Health Check and handled it like a pro - no snakes, rolling boulders, or b***y traps could stop him (just a few treats and cuddles, of course).

Got a pet with an epic name? Drop it in the comments - we love a good pun! 👇🐶✨

💜 Meet Coco! 💜

This little bundle of fluff was in for her spey, a thorough ear clean, and to bid farewell to a few stubborn baby teeth that just didn’t want to let go.🐶🦷

But let’s be honest… the real highlight of her visit? Cuddles with Maggie! 🥰 Coco made it very clear that post-op snuggles are an essential part of recovery, and Maggie was more than happy to oblige.

Did you know that some puppies need help losing their baby teeth? If those tiny teeth don’t fall out on their own, they can cause overcrowding and lead to dental issues down the track. Regular checks (and sometimes a little intervention) help keep those pearly whites in top shape! 🦷

If you’re wondering whether your pup’s baby teeth are behaving as they should, book a check-up with us and we’ll take a look! 📅✨

✨ Meet Bonnie! ✨

This gorgeous girl was in today for a routine dental scale and polish to keep her smile sparkling and her health in top shape! 🦷✨

Dental disease affects everything our pets do - from eating to playing and even their overall enjoyment of life. That’s why regular dental care is so important, even for pets who don’t show obvious signs of problems! A clean mouth means a healthier, happier life in the long run.

Bonnie took her visit in her stride, and now she’s off to enjoy the sunshine looking fresh and fabulous! 🌞🐶💛 And can we just take a moment to admire that stunning coat? 😍

🤔 What if the secret to helping kids become confident readers… had four legs, a wagging tail, and a heart full of love? 🧡🐶📖

Meet Bessie, an extraordinary Story Dog who spends her Wednesdays at Osborne Primary School in Mount Martha, helping four Grade 2 students build their reading confidence - one book at a time.

For many kids, reading aloud can feel nerve-wracking, especially in front of adults. But with Bessie, there’s no pressure, no judgment - just a calm, attentive listener who makes reading feel fun and safe 🥰📚

Bessie has been a Story Dog for four years, with the past 12 months dedicated to children in Mount Martha. Last week, we had the pleasure of welcoming Bessie and her owner, Nevile, into the clinic, and it’s easy to see why Bessie is so perfect for this role. She carries herself with such a calm and reassuring energy -exactly what young readers need.

At Bentons Road Vet, we’ve been proud sponsors of the Story Dog program for almost 10 years, starting with Maggie the Havanese in 2015. We believe in the power of pets - not just in keeping them healthy, but in celebrating how they enrich our lives and communities.

🐶💙 Bartholomew is back! You might remember his little mushroom caper 🍄 - but today, he’s healthy, happy, and officially done with his puppy vaccinations.

But instead of guessing if he’s protected, we take an extra step.

In two months, we’ll antibody titre test to check if his immune system responded properly to his puppy vaccinations. Then, instead of automatically vaccinating when he is next due, we will titre test first. If his immunity is strong, there's no need to revaccinate. If it’s waned, then we will discuss vaccination.

By testing first, we reduce unnecessary vaccines, support a healthier immune system, and provide long-term protection tailored to each pet. Because when it comes to their health, knowing is always better than guessing. 💙🐾

If you're curious about how this could work for your pet, just ask us next time you're in - we're always happy to chat.

🦷🐾 Meet Henry – Our Happiest Pre-Op Patient! 🐾🦷

Look at that smile! 😃 Henry waited so patiently to be admitted for his dental procedure and lump removal yesterday - clearly, he knew he was in good hands! 🩺✨

Pre-surgery snuggles and tail wags? ✅
Top-notch vet care? ✅
A healthier, happier Henry? ✅✅✅

We’re happy to report that Henry did fantastically well and is now back home, soaking up all the love (and probably a few extra treats! 😉).

Are Pre-Anaesthetic Blood Tests Necessary?

If your pet is young and healthy, you might think, Why bother?

Just this week, we ran a routine test before surgery and discovered a young dog with undiagnosed Stage 3 kidney disease - a condition no one suspected.

Why Does This Matter?

Most of the time, these tests confirm everything is normal, giving us confidence that your pet can safely go under anaesthesia and receive post-surgery medications. But sometimes, they uncover something unexpected - and that can be life-saving.

Without this test, we would have put our patient under anaesthesia, unaware that his kidneys were already compromised. Anaesthesia naturally lowers blood pressure, which in a pet with kidney disease, puts additional strain on the kidneys and increases the risk of further damage and potential organ failure.

On top of that, standard pain relief after surgery can be harmful to pets with kidney issues. If we hadn’t done the test, our patient could have been in real trouble.

What Happened Next?

Because we caught the problem early, we postponed the procedure and started kidney-supportive treatment first. When it’s time for surgery, we’ll use a safer anaesthetic and pain management plan to protect his kidneys.

The Takeaway 🐶🐱

Next time your vet recommends a pre-anaesthetic blood test, know that it’s not just an extra step - it’s about keeping your pet as safe as possible. ❤️

🐾 Ari’s VIP Treatment 🐾

Meet Ari, who was in for a dental last week and knew exactly how to make the most of his visit - by scoring extra cuddles with our lovely nurse, Ash! 🥰🐶

Vet visits can be a little daunting, but positive experiences like this help build trust and reduce stress. A familiar face, a warm cuddle, and a little extra TLC can make all the difference in helping pets feel safe and secure. 💛

Ari left with a sparkling smile and a happy heart - and we’re pretty sure Ash didn’t mind the snuggles either! ✨🦷

✨ Oslo Update! ✨

Remember Oslo, the little Pomeranian we treated for chronic diarrhoea? Well, we recently had a review, and he’s doing AMAZING!

Before treatment, Oslo was having diarrhoea every few weeks, but now? Just one episode (and that was at Christmas - turns out, rich festive food isn’t just a problem for humans! 🤭). Otherwise, his tummy has been perfect for three whole months!

But the best part? It’s not just his gut that’s improved. Oslo, who used to be super anxious at the clinic, now confidently takes treats from us - though he still lets us know if we overstep our boundaries (fair enough, Oslo 😆). His once dry, flaky skin has completely cleared up, and his coat is now glossy and healthy. He just looks and feels so much better overall, and it’s been incredible to see his transformation.

It’s a great reminder that gut health impacts so much more than digestion - it can affect behaviour, skin, coat, and overall wellbeing. If your pup has ongoing gut issues, allergies, or anxiety, it might be worth a chat with our vets to see what’s possible. 💛

🌻 A Little Ray of Sunshine....🌻

You know that warm, fuzzy feeling when someone does something unexpectedly kind? That’s exactly how we felt when a lovely client brought in these gorgeous sunflowers! 🌞💛

We spend our days caring for your pets, making sure they get the best treatment and plenty of love. But moments like this remind us just how much we’re cared for, too.

So, to every client who trusts us with their furry family, shares a kind word, or even brings in a little sunshine (literally!) - thank you. You make what we do even more special. 💕🐾

🐾 Luca’s VIP Backyard Consult 🐾

Not every patient is a fan of the clinic, and that’s okay! Luca is a sweet but very nervous boy, so instead of stressing him out indoors, we took his consult to a spot where he felt safe - right under our grevillea hedge. 🌿💛

Vet visits don’t have to be scary. Whether it’s in the backyard, a quiet corner, or even with a favourite treat in hand, we always do our best to make pets feel comfortable. A relaxed patient means better care and a much happier experience for everyone (including their humans!). 🐶✨

🚨 Microchip Registry Update 🚨

Some clients may not be aware that HomeSafeID has ceased operations. Meaning pets that had their microchips registered with them, may need to be re-registered with an active database.

If you're unsure where your pet’s microchip is registered with HomeSafeID, pop into the clinic for a quick scan - we’ll check their details and help update them if needed.

Just remember that keeping your pet’s microchip info current ensures a safe return home if they ever get lost. 🐶🐱💙

🐾 The Little Things Matter in Pet Health 🐾

It’s funny how we notice the small things - the way our pets greet us at the door, their quirky sleeping positions, or that look they give when they want a treat.

But when it comes to their health, the little things matter too.

A slight change in weight, a subtle shift in energy, or tiny changes in their behaviour can be early clues to what’s happening beneath the surface - often before there are obvious symptoms. That’s why we love wellness visits and annual health exams. They give us a chance to check in on the things your pet can’t tell you and make sure everything’s on track for a long, happy life.

This year, we’ve made these check-ins even more insightful by including a more complete health assessment. With a combination of bloodwork, urinalysis, and faecal screening, we can spot early signs of kidney changes, detect hidden infections, and catch parasites before they cause issues.

Together, these tests give us a much clearer picture of your pet’s health, and by bundling them, we’re able to offer a more complete assessment in a way that’s practical and cost-effective.

Your pet relies on you to notice the little things - and we’re here to help with the ones you can’t see. If it’s been a while since your pet’s last check-up, let’s check in and make sure everything’s on track.

🐾🐾 Finn: The King of Cozy! 👑🐱

Meet Finn, who came in for his annual dental and blood test last week! 🏥😺 Of course, he made sure to do it in style - wrapped up like a purrito in his plush bed, receiving VIP treatment from our lovely vet nurse Ash. 💕

Finn was an absolute superstar for his check-up, and his pearly whites are looking fantastic! Regular dentals help keep our feline friends healthy, happy, and free from dental disease - because fresh breath is always in fashion. 😸💨

🐾 Coco & Her Teddy🧸✨

Sweet little Coco came in for her 16-week vaccinations this week, and she brought her tiny teddy for some extra moral support! 🥹💛 With those big puppy-dog eyes and the fluffiest coat, she stole the hearts of everyone at the clinic.

Coco was a superstar for her visit - cuddles, treats, and a little extra courage from her teddy made sure of that! 🐶💉

✨ Ruffle's Fluffy Comeback! ✨

Meet Ruffle, the sweetest fluffball who came to us in August last year with a heartbreaking skin condition. His fur was falling out, his skin was crusty, and despite months of treatments for allergies and infections, nothing was working.😔

Dr. Kelly suspected something more complex was at play and went straight for surgical skin biopsies - and it's a good thing she did! The results confirmed Sebaceous Adenitis, a tricky autoimmune condition where the immune system attacks the skin’s sebaceous glands, leaving it dry, inflamed, and hairless.

With a targeted plan including immune suppression, dietary adjustments, key supplements (hello, Fish Oil!), and a rigorous bathing & re-oiling routine, Ruffle's transformation began. And what a transformation it was! 🌟

📸 Check out Ruffle’s incredible transformation in the photos!

Fast forward a few months, and Ruffle's coat started growing back, his skin healed beautifully, and he got his signature fluffy look back! Not only has he completely stopped his medication, but his intense twice-weekly baths are now just a once-a-month maintenance routine. 🎉

If your pet is struggling with ongoing skin issues that just won’t improve, we’re here to help! Sometimes, the real problem goes deeper than allergies or infections, and finding the right diagnosis is key.
