Adolescent cats (12-24 weeks) are going through a growth spurt and can be susceptible to common health issues like intestinal parasites, upper respiratory infections and teething. Regular deworming is essential and you might notice sneezing or mild gum irritation as they grow. Ear mites and ringworm are also treatable with prompt care.

If your kitten shows signs like vomiting, lethargy or unusual behaviour, reach out to us early. Early intervention can make a big difference in their health. Learn more here: https://www.melbournecatvets.com.au/post/common-health-concerns-for-adolescent-cats-what-every-owner-should-know

We are so proud of our director and feline medicine specialist, Dr Carolyn, who was awarded the prestigious T. G. Hungerford award at the feline conference last week. 🐱⁣

The award was conferred on Carolyn for ‘her profound and multifaceted contribution to continuing veterinary education, dedication to advancing feline medicine and research on zoonotic pathogens that has shaped the field globally.’⁣

We are so lucky to work with such an accomplished vet and cat lover like Dr Carolyn, who shows so much care and compassion to all her patients, and are so excited that she has won this award! Congratulations Carolyn 🎉

Vet visits can be stressful for cats, but Gabapentin may help! This medication can reduce anxiety, making trips to the clinic easier for your feline friend. Studies show it helps calm cats during transportation and exams, ensuring a more relaxed experience.

Gabapentin is generally safe, but it's important to discuss with us if it’s right for your cat.

❗️Important Microchip Database Update❗️

The Homesafe ID microchip database has shut down, meaning microchip details registered with this database are no longer accessible. If your cat was adopted from the RSPCA, they were likely registered with Homesafe ID.

To ensure your cat's microchip remains active, you need to register them with another database. We recommend Central Animal Records Australia.

You can check which database your cat is registered with by searching their microchip number here: https://www.petaddress.com.au/

If you don’t know your cat’s microchip number, please contact us or your regular vet clinic.

Please let us know if you have any questions. Keeping your cat’s details up to date is essential for their safety! 🐾

We understand the difficulties surrounding your pet’s details on the Homesafe ID database, and we want to make the transfer process as smooth as possible for you.

It might seem good that your cat is drinking more water than usual to stay hydrated, but excessive drinking or frequent urination can be a sign of underlying health issues, like chronic kidney disease, diabetes or hormonal imbalances. Healthy cats, especially those on wet food diets, don’t typically need much water. If you’ve noticed changes in your cat’s habits, it’s worth investigating. Early diagnosis can make all the difference!Learn more about what this behaviour might mean for your feline friend here: https://www.melbournecatvets.com.au/post/mcv-faq-is-it-healthy-for-my-cat-drink-a-lot-of-water
