Learn more about the Team at the Monbulk Vet Clinic

Meet Ebony, One of our lovely qualified veterinary nurses 😍

🐾What do you love about working in the veterinary industry?
My obvious answer to that would be my love for animals but it is more than that. Working in the veterinary industry gives a sense of purpose knowing you can be the voice for pets and their well-being. You are also always learning something new in the job everyday!

🐾Hobbies?
Outside of work you may catch me working on my own photography business capturing weddings! If I’m not working at all I would be creating anything crafty at home like painting, candle making, ect. I do also love going to local wineries in the Yarra valley on my days off!

🐾Fur family?
I have two cat fur babies of mine called Crumpet & Tofu. They were both strays that had been handed into the vet clinic and I took them under my wing as my own. They have been then best addition to the family.

🐾Favorite Food?
My favourite food is definitely anything pasta but gnocchi is my top tier favourite!! One may also call me a gnocchi connoisseur.

The beautiful Tiny and Max were recently in with us to have a procedure known as a TPLO performed by Dr Ralph Webster, a specialist small animal surgeon.

The TPLO procedure, also known as a Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy is currently the gold standard procedure used for treating animals suffering from cruciate ligament disease.
The cruciate ligament is one of the most important structures in the knee joint that helps to stabilise the femur (thigh bone) on the tibia (shin bone). Once this ligament is no longer doing its job the joint becomes unstable and arthritis develops in the joint, which causes pain and lameness.

The TPLO procedure changes the biomechanics of the knee joint so that the cruciate ligament is no longer required. First the joint is inspected with the scope and then a cut is made into the tibia to allow the bone to be re-positioned. As you can see on the radiograph, a plate and screws are used to stabilise the tibia in the new position so that after the recovery stage, the cruciate ligament is no longer required and the knee joint can function as normal.

Dr Ralph and his team offer a fantastic mobile surgery service, which means that your pets can have specialist surgery performed with us at Monbulk Vet Clinic.

Both Tiny and Max are recovering well. They will have radiographs performed at 8 weeks following the procedure to make sure everything has healed before allowing them to return to normal activities🐶🐶🐶

Meet the beautiful Franki!

This sweet older lady was seen at the clinic due to concerns of sneezing that didn’t seem to be getting better with medication.

Our biggest concern was potentially a growth in the nasal cavity, and the best way to investigate this further was through inserting a camera up her nose (also known as rhinoscopy) and a scan of her skull. Franki was first placed under a general anaesthetic to allow the rhinoscopy to be performed and no abnormalities were detected so then we proceeded with a CT scan. Franki had both of these procedures performed at Vetland Hospital and Emergency Clinic and she went home to her owners whilst we waited for the CT scan results.

Results of the CT scan revealed that there were some changes to the bone around her upper right canin tooth, and it was determined that a severe infection at the tip of this tooth was the cause of her sneezing.

Franki then came back to Monbulk Vet Clinic where we proceeded with a dental to remove the affected teeth.

We are so pleased to report that Franki has recovered well; no more sneezing and is feeling like a new dog!

A big thank you goes to VetLand Vet Hospital and the team, whom we were so lucky to be able to work with to perform the necessary diagnostics to allow us to determine the best treatment pathway for Franki!

Chilli came in this week for his final check up following surgery and we were happy to say he can return to normal activities! 🐱🐱🐱

His owners brought him in for a consultation due to concerns that he had ingested some elastic material from one of his toys. Linear foreign bodies, such as string/ elastic/ hair ties and ribbons are one of the most common foreign bodies that cats will ingest.

On surgical exploration we retrieved a large amount of foreign material from his gastrointestinal tract. Ingestion of foreign bodies can cause serious complications and lead to perforation of the intestines and infection in the abdominal cavity. Thankfully, Chilli's owners were fast to act and meant that there was no serious complications identified at the time of surgery. Chilli was an absolute pleasure of a patient and we were so happy to see him recover smoothly from the procedure!

We are so pleased to see Lulu is back to feeling 110%! 🐶🥰🐾

Lulu came into the clinic due to concerns with her having a rather large abdomen. After some investigation there was a concern that she was suffering from a condition known as pyometra so exploratory surgery was performed.

During surgery, her uterus was identified to be largely dilated with pus and so we proceeded with ovariohysterectomy (removal of the uterus and ovaries). Her uterus weighed a whopping 1.8kg!! The second photo you can see the photo of the removed uterus and ovaries (WARNING GRAPHIC)

🐾Why does a pyometra occur?
Pyometra is a condition that occurs in entire female dogs and is one of the reasons we strongly advise desexing your bitch if you do not intend to use them for breeding purposes.

When an entire female dog is on heat the cervix becomes open, allowing bacteria to enter the uterus. The condition is more common in middle-aged to older dogs, whom have changes to the uterus that leads to it being unable to expel the bacteria that has entered the uterus during their heat cycle. This leads to a serious infection and a build up of pus within the uterus.

🐾What are the signs my dog may be suffering from pyometra?
Some dogs may have a mild amount of discharge from their v***a but others will not have any signs until later on in the disease process where the dog may be off food, lethargic and may experience vomiting and diarrhoea. Some dogs will also be drinking excessive amounts of water.

If you are concerned about your dog or have an entire female dog and wish to hear more about the desexing procedure then do not hesitate to contact the clinic on 03 9752 1001

Lola and Lottie were in recently for their desexing procedure. At the same time, they also had a gastropexy performed due to being an at risk breed for suffering from a condition known as bloat, or GDV (Gastric Dilation and Volvulus).

🐶What is bloat?
This can be a life threatening condition where the stomach becomes dilated and then rotates on itself causing a blockage to the blood supply to the stomach, which can cause damage to the cells of the stomach and other organs in the body.
Signs that your dog may be suffering from bloat include a hard or bloated abdomen, excessive drooling or vomiting and distress. Of course, if you are unsure or concerned that your dog may be suffering from bloat you should seek veterinary attention immediately.

🐶What causes bloat?
Whilst this condition isn’t completely understood, there are some risk factors that can mean your dog may be more likely to suffer from the condition. This includes:
🐾Large deep chested breeds, such as German Sherpherds, Boxers, Dobermans, Saint Bernards and Great Danes
🐾Being fed a large meal once daily
🐾Drinking large amounts in a short period of time

🐶What can you do to prevent it?
A gastropexy is a surgical procedure that can easily be performed when your pet is desexed, or can also be performed as a procedure on its own. During this procedure, your dog's stomach is sutured to the abdominal wall lining. This essentially forms an anchoring point for the stomach and therefore greatly reduces the risk of the stomach rotating on itself.
We also recommend feeding at risk dogs in small frequent meals throughout the day and also discouraging exercise prior to and following meals

If you would like to discuss this procedure further or may be unsure if it would be recommended for your dog then do not hesitate to contact the clinic and organise an appointment with our veterinarian

Arthritis may also be known as osteoarthritis or degenerative joint disease. Whilst this is a common disease suffered by our older dogs and cats, we can also see the condition in younger patients too.

The condition is can be due to wear and tear on the joints but also in some circumstances secondary to injury to the joints.

Some signs that your dog/ cat may be struggling may include
🐾 Struggling to jump up/ down
🐾 Slowing down on walks
🐾 Sleeping more often
🐾 Limping
🐾 Stiffness
🐾 Change in personality

There are numerous options avaliable for your pet to help alleviate pain suffered due to osteoarthritis and our vets can help tailor an appropriate program for your pet.

This week we had a good reminder why it is so important to always make sure your details on your pets microchip are up to date!

This beautiful little kitty was brought into the clinic after she was noticed hanging around. A quick scan of the microchip and search on the database revealed she had in fact been reported missing four years ago!

Her owner was shocked and excited to receive the phone call from us, which ended in a happy reunion 🐱💕🐱

If you need help checking your pets microchip number this can easily be done by bringing them into the clinic!
