A Shingleback Update!!

My recent post regarding the Shinglebacks certainly garnered a lot of interest so I thought you might like a bit of an update.

Originally I posted that 6 lizards had come into care. Well that changed a little after I posted!!! The following day I had an additional 8 lizards arrive... this means I now have 14 Shinglebacks! This is in addition to the 3 Lace Monitors that I have already put up for adoption. There are also some additional species that also came in that will be available shortly (paperwork pending). Needless to say it's been a bit busy with feeding and cleaning of late!

All but one of the Shinglebacks is doing well. They are smashing food, gaining weight and very active. Interesting they were extremely thirsty when they first arrived so I strongly suspect they had no access to water for some time. The one that is struggling is the youngest and smallest of the group. It is receiving fluids and supplemental feeding but it is slow progress. I am hopeful it will pull through but it's going to take a bit of work.

There were many questions regarding why these animals could not be just released back into the wild. As I mentioned in the comments we cannot just let them go. The authorities have no idea if they are wild caught or captive bred. After watching them I am convinced they are either captive bred or have been in captivity for some time. In addition if they are wild caught the authorities also have no idea where these animals have come from. As such it would be a biosecurity nightmare to just release them into a wild population.

Some of these lizards will likely be available for adoption next week.

I know I am going to get asked what they are eating... this is a mixture of assorted vegetables (carrot, broccoli, capsicum, bok choy). The meat is Prime 100 Chicken Roll. I like this because it stays firm and doesn't get mushed into the bowl or substrate. I have also been mixing some Emeraid Omnivore powder or mealworm meal into the vegetables.

The green numbers on their heads are so I can tell them apart and kept accurate weight records. They are being housed in 250L plastic tubs with pet bedding as the substrate (they love burying in it at night). I have a 100W halogen heat lamp and 12% T5 UVB globe over them that is on for 12 hours a day.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Homeless Herps

Each year in Australia many reptiles and amphibians are found as strays (i.e. escaped or dumped pets), seized by wildlife authorities from unlicenced keepers or translocated from their natural range through misadventure (e.g. accidently shipped in goods from interstate). Laws require a licence to keep most species of reptile and amphibian so legally rehoming these lost animals can be problematic. Homeless Herps is fully licenced by the Victorian Government’s Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning to take in these animals and legally rehome them. All animals are fully vet checked by experienced reptile and amphibian veterinarians from the team at The Unusual Pets Vets - Peninsula. Where possible they are sexed and microchipped. A small adoption fee is charged to cover the costs involved in housing and microchipping the animals. For all enquiries please contact The Unusual Pet Vets - Peninsula on (03) 8738 3210 or [email protected] We are located at 210 Karingal Drive, Frankston, Victoria, 3199, AUSTRALIA
