Planning a BBQ on Australia Day? To prevent an emergency trip to the vet we have five quick safety tips for your pets πŸ‡¦πŸ‡ΊπŸ₯©πŸŒπŸΎβ€οΈ.

1. BBQ food is not for pets – ask your guests not to feed your pets. Corn cobs can cause an obstruction if swallowed. Sausages and fatty offcuts can cause stomach upsets or lead to pancreatitis. Onions (both cooked and raw) are toxic to pets. Bones can cause an obstruction or intestinal damage. Keep some pet friendly snacks on hand to help your pets feel special without risking their health.
2. Keep rubbish out of reach – dogs in particular are attracted to the smells of your BBQ rubbish so make sure it is stored well out of reach. BBQ skewers, corn cobs, aluminium foil, cooked bones, fatty scraps and plastic wrapping are all potential hazards that can lead to an emergency trip to the vet.
3. Make sure they have their ID – parties can be a busy time with family and friends so keep an eye on your pet to prevent them wandering off. Make sure your pet is wearing a collar with ID tag and that their microchip details are up to date in case they accidentally escape. If your pet gets anxious around guests and parties, offer them a quiet room to relax in.
4. Keep pets away from the BBQ itself – pets can be tempted by the smell of cooking and try to jump up to access the food, unaware of the risk of burns. Shut the lid to your BBQ when not in use and keep a watchful eye over pets during cooking and serving times.
5. Look after your pet – don’t forget to look after your pet as well as your guests. Make sure your pets have plenty of cool water to drink, shade to keep cool and a quiet place to relax away from all the noise and guests.

Pavements can heat up hot days and burn your dog’s paws. 🐾🌞

Remember the 5 second rule: if you can’t hold your hand on the pavement for 5 seconds it’s too hot for your dog. On hot days, its best to walk your dog early in the morning or in the evening to beat the heat and remember to keep your pet hydrated.

We are about to count in the new year, which is the most common time of year for fireworks. Fireworks can be a stressful time for pets, with loud noises and bright flashes that can cause anxiety πŸŽ‡πŸΎ.

Here are a few tips to help your furry friend stay calm and safe throughout the noisy celebrations:

1. Create a safe space - set up a quiet, cozy spot away from the noise
2. Play soothing music – to help override the noise and encourage them to relax
3. Exercise them beforehand – to encourage them to rest during the excitement
4. Keep them safe & secure – secure your home to prevent escapes and make sure they have their ID
5. Provide extra comfort – such as extra cuddles and soothing pats

Our Story

WoofPurNay Veterinary Hospital is owned and operated by Dr Gary Stapleton who has a loyal client following and has been treating small and large animals throughout Victoria for over 40 years.

Whilst Gary has owned a number of veterinary clinics during this time, WoofPurNay Veterinary Hospital is like no other.

Dr Gary Stapleton started planning this purpose built 2,800 square meter facility back in 2003 as not only a first class veterinary and emergency hospital, but also as a teaching and learning facility.

The clinic became operational in 2008 and includes fully equipped examination rooms, in house diagnostic equipment and first class surgical facilities with an overhead viewing area.
